  • Patent number: 6063937
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of making alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of L-ascorbic acid 2-monophosphate comprising reacting a L-ascorbic acid 2-polyphosphate under alkaline conditions with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of L-ascorbic-acid in concentrated aqueous solution. The amount of the L-ascorbic acid salt is in molar excess of the polyphosphate and the pH value of the reaction medium is maintained in the range of from about 8 to about 11 wherein the reaction is carried out until substantially all of the polyphosphate has been consumed and only L-ascorbic acid 2-monophosphate salt is present. A further aspect of the present invention comprises spray drying the mixture obtained after completion of the reaction, cooling and dilution to a suitable viscosity.

  • Patent number: 6033649
Abstract: Photostable, cosmetic light-screening composition, comprising, in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle containing at least one fatty phase, about 0.1 to about 5%, in particular about 1 to about 3% by weight, of a dibenzoylmethane type UV-A screening agent and at least about 0.5%, in particular about 0.5 to about 4.5% by weight, of a .alpha.-cyano-.beta.,.beta.-diphenyl-acrylate stabilizer, the mole ratio of the acrylate to the dibenzoylmethane derivative being less than 0.8, if the amount of the dibenzoylmethane is 1% or more, and, optionally, at least one conventional UV-B filter.

  • Patent number: 6001554
Abstract: Multiple micro-encapsulations of a high concentration oleophilic substance using heat to set the primary particle renders the composition suitable for the production of free-flowing powders or beadlets. Microencapsulation involves forming an emulsion out of the oleophilic substance and a polymer, and then use heat setting and/or cross-linking the polymer encapsulates the oleophilic composition. This process is then repeated with a second polymer or third polymer, and with or without cross-linked via the same or different mechanism to further protect the oleophilic substance.

  • Patent number: 5986113
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polyene esters or polyene acids comprises reacting a polyene O,O-dialkylacetal of di(O,O-dialkylacetal) with a vinylketene acetal or analogue thereof in the presence of a Lewis acid, hydrolyzing the reaction mixture depending on the vinylketene acetal used, subsequently cleaving alcohol under strongly basic conditions from the polyene derivative produced at this stage and, where the desired ester or carboxy group is still not present, performing the respective conversion. Certain intermediates in this process form a further aspect of the invention. The final products are primarily carotenoids which can be used appropriately, e.g. as colorants and pigments for foodstuffs, animal products etc.
