  • Patent number: 8218433
Abstract: A system, method, and device for monitoring the connectivity of a network that has been configured in a ring topology, such as an Ethernet ring network. The ring network includes a plurality of nodes, each with first port and a second port for forwarding CC messages to respective neighbor nodes, and an MEP for forming and processing the CC messages. Of the plurality of network nodes, neighbor nodes are selected as CC forwarding nodes and, after a database on each node has been configured, the selected nodes begin sending CC messages to each other via the ring network, beginning with transmission to a non-selected node. If a selected node fails to receive an expected CC message, it transmits a fault notification and ceases sending CC messages. The network then reselects CC message forwarding nodes, which begin forwarding CC messages until another fault is detected or the network is otherwise reconfigured.

  • Patent number: 8213326
Abstract: A method and apparatus for classifying a port on a node in a data communications network, such as a router. The node, itself or in some embodiments though another network device, determines whether the port in question is currently receiving packets from a single address, for example a MAC address, only. If so, incoming packets of at least a first type are selected for inspection. The inspection criteria may vary with the type or types of packets selected, but in any case the results of the inspection are used to determine whether the single address corresponds with a client device. If so, selective security measures may be applied to the port. If security measures are applied to a port, the port is preferably monitored periodically to ensure that it remains a client port. The frequency of inspections or monitoring may vary depending on the port's classification history.

  • Patent number: 8131266
Abstract: A system, method, and device for securely forwarding SMS messages in a communication system, for example in a communication system including an IMS network accessible to wireless devices via a radio access network. The communication system forwards SMS messages from a sending station to a receiving station via a network node. The network node, which may be an SMSC in an IMS network, is operable to determine whether the SMS message is encrypted and whether the intended recipient supports encryption, and then the network node selectively encrypts and decrypts received SMS messages prior to forwarding to the intended recipient; SMS messages received unencrypted are encrypted by the SMS message encrypter/decrypter if the intended recipient supports encryption, and SMS messages received encrypted are decrypted by the SMS message encrypter/decrypter if the intended recipient does not support SMS message encryption.

  • Patent number: 8102760
Abstract: A manner of providing for re-convergence in a dual homing network following the failure of one of the dual homing links. When such a failure is detected, the port roles are recomputed using an xSTP protocol. Prior to the completion of the computation, the operEdge variable is set to true, typically resulting in a more rapid re-convergence that may achieve sub 50 ms performance. When the computation is complete, the operEdge variable is reset to “false. The xSTP protocol may be, for example, RSTP or MSTP. The invention may be implemented in a CE device attached to a VPLS core or other network, and may be used in a LAG environment.
