  • Patent number: 7162136
Abstract: A non-circular, mechanically variable optical attenuator using a pair of specially constructed polarizing elements with means enabling a gradual transition from un-crossed polarization vector fields to crossed polarization vector fields using a linear motion with respect to one another. The polarizing elements whose polarization axis varies with spatial position on the element have a polarization vector field that is a function of position on the element. Specifically, the two polarizing elements have a defined orientation of polarization axes or vectors on the polarization vector fields that vary with spatial location on the polarizing element such that when aligned light passes, and when the polarization axes are crossed, light is attenuated. The present attenuator has a practical application for dimmable mirrors or windows by providing a variable optical attenuator that is purely mechanical and non-circular in shape.

  • Patent number: 7114374
Abstract: A method for making fluid elasticity measurements using an extensional viscometer (100) is disclosed, where stress is not directly measured but is inferred from an accurate measurement of the change in the rate of flow of a liquid during passage through a vertical capillary (104). The flow rate changes when the liquid jet, also called the liquid filament, leaving a first capillary (104), is stretched by the application of vacuum forces. Steady flow is established almost instantly by using a constant liquid head (102, 118) above the capillary, and the flow rate is determined by timing the interval for liquid to drain between two marks (110, 112) on the liquid reservoir surface. Extensional viscosity can be calculated as a ratio of the tensile stress and stretch rate of the liquid at different axial positions.

  • Patent number: 7025667
Abstract: An apparatus including first and second sections of a sanding block slidably interconnected and adapted for use with a continuous belt, and a resilient member interposed between the first section and second sections such that the resilient member both selectively repels the first and second sections one from the other while securing the first and second sections in a desired position relative to one another. The resilient member is rotatably connected to the first section of the sanding block such that the resilient member moves between alternate rotational positions. The resilient member produces variable pressure on the second section of sanding block depending on the rotational position of the resilient member. The resilient member includes a lever for securing the second section of sanding block in a position relative to the first section of sanding block.

  • Patent number: 6958676
Abstract: A system for authorizing vehicle and passenger entry into a secure area while the vehicle is moving is disclosed. The vehicle passenger authorization system verifies the identity of the vehicle and its occupants while the vehicle is moving, thereby eliminating the need for the vehicle to stop as it approaches a secure area. Vehicle imaging technology is used to identify the vehicle. Biometric technology is used to confirm the identity of the occupants of the vehicle. By combining the biometric information of the occupants with the vehicle identification, an efficient and safe means for automatically controlling the flow of traffic into secured areas is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6929112
Abstract: A conveyor belt cleaning system being a torsion blade holder assembly having a mounting sub-assembly and a blade support sub-assembly. The mounting sub-assembly has a first hollow member and a second member situated at least partially therein with torsion elements in the plurality of spaces or cavities between the first hollow member and the second member. The blade support sub-assembly, in which a scraper blade is secured, is attached to the second member such that when the scraper blade meets resistance while scraping the surface of a conveyor belt, the torsion elements are compressed and the blade support sub-assembly with the scraper blade rotates away from the conveyor belt.

  • Patent number: 6901925
Abstract: A fireplace including a fire box having a means for producing flames, a trough positioned in front of or around the fire box, and a hood positioned above the fire box and extending out from the fireplace beyond a front opening in the fire box. Positioned in the trough is a plumbing assembly having a pump and piping for transporting water from the trough upward and through an opening in the hood positioned above the fire box. The hood extends outward beyond the fire box such that water will fall freely in front of the fire box containing the flames and into the trough. One or more nozzles may be connected to the piping near one or more openings in the hood to adjust the trajectory of the water as it falls from the hood.

  • Patent number: 6872045
Abstract: A fluid drive conversion system having a plurality of flat foils rotatably connected to a vertical shaft such that the foils are generally vertical in position, pivot about a vertical axis, are a predefined distance, at least about one quarter of the width of a foil, from the vertical shaft thereby creating a central space. In operation, fluid flows through the central space and simultaneously pushes the back side of at least one foil while pushing the front side of one or more remaining foils, resulting in all of the foils rotating about the vertical shaft and contributing to the generation of usable energy. A wing is pivotally connected to the distal end of each radial arm and a bottom radial arm wherein each wing is in a general vertical orientation. The fluid drive conversion system employs either a conventional gear system, a conventional pulley system, or an electrical generation assembly using magnets, coils, and a means for harnessing an electrical current.

  • Patent number: 6835945
Abstract: A portable and modular shielding system having various modular wall components that can be interconnect to form a custom designed wall configuration, wherein the resulting wall provides shielding from radiation at its joints of two adjacent modular wall components as well as along its entire length. The principal modular wall component has a main container being generally rectangular in shape and a connector container being an elongated cylinder having a cross section that is generally circular in shape and being integrally connected to the second end of the main container. The first end of the main container is concave in shape and adapted to correspond to the generally circular shape of the connector container. A shielding wall is formed by interconnecting a connector container of a first modular wall component into a first end of a second modular wall component. The main container and connector container are hollow and are adapted to be filled with a filler material.

  • Patent number: 6810755
Abstract: A permeameter having a hollow tube with a second tube slidably disposed within an internal chamber of the hollow tube, used in combination with one or more tables each of which correlates a specific rate of reading fall rate of water within the hollow tube with a unique soil hydraulic capacity of the soil being tested. The second tube has an air hole and a slot which are used in causing water contained in the hollow tube to seep into an auger hole. A reducing connector is secured to the bottom of the hollow tube which provides the means for maintaining the second tube within the internal chamber of the hollow tube. The second tube is secured in the extended position by a compression fitting attached to the reducing connector. A conventional measuring tape, having consecutive markings showing continuous ¼, ½, and 1 inch distances, is affixed to the outside surface of the hollow tube such that the numbers extend vertically along the length, or longitudinal central axis, of the hollow tube.
