Patent number: 8347505Abstract: A spring for use in downhole tools delivers a high force over a long deflection in a relatively uniform fashion. The spring is a tubular shape that is preferably metallic and is preferably plastically deformed into an undulating walled tube either before assembly into a downhole tool or downhole after assembly to the downhole tool. Alternatively the shape can be machined. Spacer rings are used inside and outside the tube as it is compressed to obtain the desired corrugated wall pattern and to prevent localized buckling that can cause wall failure. The spring can conduct pressurized fluids and be rotationally locked to transmit torque and to facilitate milling out. Some machining internally and/or externally can assist in forming the desired corrugated wall shape.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Larry J. Urban, Edward J. O'Malley, Steve Rosenblatt

Patent number: 8342245Abstract: A completion tubular is placed in position adjacent the zone or zones to be fractured and produced. It features preferably sliding sleeve valves one series of which can be put in the wide open position after run in for gravel packing and fracturing zones one at a time or in any desired order. These valves are then closed and another series of valves can be opened wide but with a screen material juxtaposed in the flow passage to selectively produce from one or more fractured zones. An annular path behind the gravel is provided by an offset screen to promote flow to the screened production port. The path can be a closed annulus that comes short of the production port or goes over it. For short runs an exterior screen or shroud is eliminated for a sliding sleeve with multiple screened ports that can be opened in tandem.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2011Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Bennett M. Patent number: 8342238Abstract: A venturi structure is supported below an ESP preferably off its gauge assembly below its motor so that the surrounding casing or wellbore defines the venturi path leading to the suction connection of the ESP. Multiple pressure sensing locations are provided in case the gauge that defines the venturi path is disposed off center in the bore or if the bore is on an incline. The gauge can receive forms of different sizes depending on the size of the surrounding tubular where the forms use an incline of preferably 15-20 degrees and allow for measuring differential near the perforations and at the constriction location so that the flow can be computed using the Bernoulli Equation.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2009Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Robert H. Patent number: 8333244Abstract: The bottom tag of the present invention comprises a tapered coupling that is secured below the stator housing. In one embodiment the smaller diameter of the coupling is smaller than the rotor minor diameter. In another embodiment the smallest diameter in the coupling tag is smaller than the major diameter of the rotor and longer than one half the rotor pitch, so that no more than one half of a rotor pitch can enter. In either case there are optional side openings to aid flow during operation. The taper in the coupling tag guides coiled tubing through when the rotor is removed to clean up the wellbore below by jetting through the coiled tubing. The taper can also guide measurement equipment through.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2009Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Nicholas D. Johnson, Douglas W. Patent number: 8333236Abstract: A cutting assembly for external conduits on a tubing string or main tubular conduit features at least one breakaway in the string that can be severed with a tensile force. Preferably each external conduit is run through a cutter housing that is integral with a passage having threaded end connections. While in some scenarios it is preferred that the main tubular conduit is severed below the cutting assembly thus allowing the cutting apparatus to be retrieved with the upper portions of the cut main tubular conduit and external longitudinal member(s), in other circumstances it may be desired that the main tubular conduit is severed above the cutting assembly allowing the cutting apparatus to be left “downhole” with the lower portion of the cut main tubular conduit and the BHA. The cutter knife assembly chambers or channels can be in banks that are axially spaced using bypass channels to access lower banks.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2009Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Christopher W. Patent number: 8322413Abstract: The retrieving tool engages an equalizing sleeve on a jar down movement while the packer or bridge plug release sleeve is held fixed with a locking dog. The initial jarring down allows the tool to engage the equalizing sleeve and pull it up subsequent to the initial engagement by jarring down. Pulling or jarring up then opens the equalizing ports while still holding the release sleeve locked using a trapped collet. A subsequent jarring down allows engagement of a second sleeve so that a subsequent pulling or jarring up moves the second sleeve away from the collet that had otherwise held the set position of the packer or bridge plug. A pull or jar force up brings up the now released packer or bridge plug.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2010Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: David S. Bishop, Dennis E. Kroll

Patent number: 8307891Abstract: Wedge shaped elements form a ring structure that can increase in diameter for a grip using relative axial motion of adjacent segments. The adjacent seal is further separated from access to the edges of the adjacent segments that move relatively by ring segments attached to the wide dimension of the segments that face the seal. The ring segments move out with the wedge elements to which they are attached so that in the set position of the seal there is an enhanced barrier against the surrounding tubular with the ring segments. The ring segments further block access of the seal under compressive loading to the interface locations between the wedge shaped elements so that their relative axial movement does not trap a portion of the seal and initiate cracks in the seal that can lead to leakage past the seal.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2010Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: David S. Bishop, James C. Doane, Dennis E. Kroll

Patent number: 8291982Abstract: A completion tubular is placed in position adjacent the zone or zones to be fractured and produced. It features preferably sliding sleeve valves that can assume at least two configurations: wide open and open with a screen material juxtaposed in the flow passage. In a preferred embodiment the valve assembly has three positions, adding a fully closed position to the other two mentioned. After run in, the valves can be put in the wide open position in any order desired to fracture. After fracturing, the valves can be closed or selectively be put in filtration position for production from the fractured zones in any desired order. Various ways are described to actuate the valves. The tubular can have telescoping pistons through which the fracturing can take place if the application calls for a cemented tubular.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2011Date of Patent: October 23, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Douglas J. Patent number: 8281854Abstract: A subterranean screen system features openings in a base pipe and sleeve sections of a porous material that preferably swells in the borehole to span an annular space around the base pipe. Retainers are mounted to the base pipe in a desired location and mechanically fixated using an internal grip system actuated through the wall of the retainer. A wedging action of slip segments is initiated by an angularly advancing assembly through the wall of the retainer. The retainer can have end rings extending past one or both ends over which the screen sleeve extends. Flat or ridges on the exterior of the retainer or end rings make assembly easier with hand tools to allow for rapid field assembly, if needed. Filtration occurs through the sleeves that abut the borehole wall and into the base pipe openings and to the surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2010Date of Patent: October 9, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Sean L. Gaudette, Jason J. Barnard, Gerald D. Lynde, Omar H. Balcazar

Patent number: 8261835Abstract: A downhole tool is hydraulically actuated through a control system that features rod piston(s) that are double acting. The piston bore is in a single housing component with an annular cavity that provides access to all piston bores to move the pistons in a first direction. The housing component that has the piston bore also includes an internal sleeve in a passage in the housing. A second control system connection communicates with a sealed annular space defined between the sleeve and the passage wall that holds the sleeve. A series of radial ports communicate from the annular space into each piston bore on the opposite side of each piston from the annular cavity so that each piston is double acting with a bore in a single housing component.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2009Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Kevin R. Patent number: 8261817Abstract: A modular pressure operated actuator can be coupled with a downhole tool to selectively operate it at least once. In the preferred embodiment the module can be mounted adjacent an isolation valve and after a fixed number of on and off pressure cycles allow a spring to push an actuator to operate the valve to an open position. The actuator, in another embodiment, can be reset with a tool run into the module to move the actuator back against a power spring and hold that spring force until the pressure cycling begins again. The preferred application is for a formation isolation ball valve but other valves, such as sliding sleeves, or other types of downhole tools can be actuated with the module that permits a retrofit of a hydraulic operation to a heretofore purely mechanically actuated tool.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2009Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Steven Hayter, William N. Patent number: 8257585Abstract: A debris catcher uses induced circulation from a venturi to urge debris laden flow into the lower end of a housing. An inlet tube maintains velocity so as to keep the debris moving with the fluid stream as it goes up the inlet tube. A screen fits over the open end of the inlet tube and runs down around the inlet tube toward the entrance of the debris laden fluid into the lower end of the housing. There is a clearance around the cylindrical portion of the screen so some flow can exit that way. There is also an open exit through the top of the screen that can be reached after the fluid stream makes two hairpin turns. Many modules can be stacked. Each module has a large screen area for flow to exit and progressive modules can have smaller screen openings in an uphole flow direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2009Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: John P. Davis, Paul L. Connell

Patent number: 8235114Abstract: A fracturing and gravel packing tool has features that prevent well swabbing when the tool is picked up with respect to a set isolation packer. An upper or jet valve allows switching between the squeeze and circulation positions without risk of closing the wash pipe valve. The wash pipe valve can only be closed with multiple movements in opposed direction that occur after a predetermined force is held for a finite time to allow movement that arms the wash pipe valve. The jet valve can prevent fluid loss to the formation when being set down whether the crossover tool is supported on the packer or on the smart collet.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2009Date of Patent: August 7, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Nicholas J. Clem, Martin P. Coronado, Jeffery D. Kitzman, Jeffry S. Edwards

Patent number: 8225890Abstract: Control of the carbide volume in the matrix in an impregnated bit is accomplished by coating the hard particles in the matrix to space them further apart to increase the soft binder percentage in a controllable manner. The softer binder due to lower volume content of hard particles allows more rapid matrix wear in the softer formations to allow more diamond grit to cut better before getting flat spots and to be replaced faster with additional diamond grit further into the matrix as the higher content of the softer binder and the softer coating on the hard particles in the matrix promotes more effective cutting with more frequent emergence of diamond grit on the bit face as cutting progresses.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2009Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Dan E.
