The moistening and sealing apparatus is designed to receive all types of intermixed mail envelopes with various shaped flaps. The system is designed.to receive such envelopes, process them so that the flaps are automatically closed prior to moistening if they are not closed.     Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, when a mailer generates a mail piece, for example using mail generation software in a PC metering system, the mail generation software accesses a database of mailing addresses. This database also contains e-mail address of recipients in the mailing list (address database). If a mailer wants to send advance notice to a recipient that a mailpiece has been sent to the recipient, the mailer can choose this option automatically and use a unique mailpiece ID as an identifier of the upcoming mailpiece. (The mailpiece ID can be generated specially for this purpose and serve as a reference point for the mailer and the recipient). This can be particularly advantageous in a legal environment, when there is a need for timely distribution of information as well as the need for distribution of legally valid hard copy documents. The unique ID number may be printed in plain text in the address block and cryptographically encoded within the DPM.

    Abstract: According to the present invention, the unauthorized refill of a retaining cartridge is prevented by providing a smart button cell affixed to a retaining cartridge. The smart button cell is loaded with information specific to both the vendor and the retaining cartridge and the information is cryptographically signed. The smart button cell is operatively inserted into a host machine, having a memory and a processor, in a manner enabling communication of information between the smart button cell and the memory of the host machine. The host machine then reads and verifies the cryptographic signature of the information to determine if the retaining cartridge is authorized. If the host machine determines the cartridge is authorized, then the machine operates under normal conditions. If however, the host machine determines the cartridge is not authorized then operation is terminated. After each time the cartridge is refilled the number of refills is recorded and used in determining a new cryptographic signature.

    Abstract: A retard module in a mail separator having a floating, middle idler to change the ingestion angle of the mail separator. The retard module further has a downstream idler, an upstream pulley driven by a motor, and an endless belt forming a loop around the idlers and the pulley to provide a retarding force against a feed module. The downstream portion of the retard belt and the belt of the feed module form a nip to ingest incoming mail. The floating idler and the downstream idler are mounted on a bracket which, in turn, is pivotally mounted on a frame of the retard module. Initially, the ingestion angle at the nip is acute and thereby reduces damage to the incoming mailpieces. But when a thick mailpiece enters the separator, it causes the floating idler to move away further from the feed module and thereby increases the ingestion angle. A large ingestion angle allows thicker mailpieces to pass through the nip without substantially increasing the nipping forces.
