  • Patent number: 4176715
Abstract: A well packer has a casing engaging slip mechanism and a packing element carried on a tubular body which is released from the slip assembly enabling setting of the slips and packing by an upward pull on a running in string of pipe. The body and the expander for the slips are locked to hold the packer set. A length of tubing extends through a seal in the body and is released to be slideable in the body enabling temperatue change responsive elongation and contraction of the running pipe, without affecting the packer. A shearable release enables retrieval of the packer assembly by pulling on the running pipe. An emergency release of the running pipe is accomplished by releasing a guide on the end of the slideable tubing.Well bore packers are frequently used in well casings, with a tubular string of running and retrieving pipe or tubing associated with the packer and held in tension. In the presence of high temperatures, the resultant expansion of the tubing tends to relieve the tubing tension.

  • Patent number: 4153278
Abstract: A misalignment connector for large pipelines, conductor pipes or the like, includes an internal, metal seal ring having an external spherical periphery which is axially and circumferentially loaded between opposed internal spherical surfaces of connector structures which are operable by hydraulic piston and cylinder means to be interconnected over a range of angular misalignment. The internal sealing ring is preloaded when the connector parts are secured together. Initially, the internal sealing ring is supported in or nearly in engagement with one of the companion spherical surfaces of the connector parts for proper engagement and angular motion upon the interconnection of the connector parts over the permissible angular range of misalignment. The connector is made up by the application of fluid pressure to the actuator cylinder and piston means after the connector parts have been stabbed together. Radially shiftable locking elements are wedged towards one another by the action of the actuator cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4153109
Abstract: A packer having an orienting device is lowered in a well bore to a desired location and turned, if necessary, to point the orienting device in a selected direction, after which the packer is anchored against movement in the well bore. A whipstock, anchor and orienting mandrel are secured together in such manner that an orienting device on the mandrel, companion to the packer orienting device, is aligned with the whipstock. The whipstock, anchor and mandrel combination is then lowered in the well bore, the mandrel orienting device engaging the packer orienting device, effecting turning of the combination to point the whipstock in the same final direction as the packer orienting device, whereupon the anchor is secured to the packer to prevent movement of the whipstock from its final oriented position, which is the direction that a suitable cutting tool is to be deflected by the whipstock to cut a window in a well casing in the well bore, to sidetrack the well bore, or to perform both of these operations.

  • Patent number: 4103744
Abstract: An equalizing valve is incorporated in a subsurface shutoff valve for wells and has a number of balls loosely confined in an annular groove in the tubular valve body and adapted to seat in by-pass ports in the shutoff valve actuator piston sleeve to prevent flow through such by-pass ports from ports in valve body which communicate with the groove. Actuation of the piston sleeve to open the shutoff valve causes a shoulder forming the groove to wipe the seated balls from the by-pass ports to equalize fluid across the shutoff valve before it is opened. The shutoff valve is of the ball type or of another type. The shutoff valve of the ball type, when closed, subjects its support bars to a force deforming them to allow the shutoff valve ball to move into seating engagement with a seating sleeve to prevent extrusion of an elastmer seal.
