  • Patent number: 4283720
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for monitoring the operation of electronic equipment having a plurality of circuits to be monitored, each of which has a fault indication terminal (24). In accordance with the invention, fault simulation means comprise a cyclic address counter (9) having a higher number of states than there are circuits to be monitored, and which is arranged to switch the binary fault indicating terminal of a circuit to its fault condition when indicating the address of the circuit. When indicating an address that is not allocated to any of the circuits, none of the circuits ought to respond. A check is thus performed on the operation of the fault simulation means itself. The invention is applicable to electronic equipment requiring a high degree of security in operation, e.g. a redundant time base. The equipment may be analogue or digital.

  • Patent number: 4282494
Abstract: In a double heterojunction semiconductor laser, extremely high optical power density emission is achieved by forming a stripe-geometry exciting region in an active layer so as not to be exposed on the opposite reflective surfaces, and selecting a band gap of the stripe-geometry exciting region narrower than that of surrounding non-exciting region of the active layer. A pair of window regions formed between the respective reflective surfaces and the tip ends of the stripe-geometry exciting region are sandwiched between a pair of heterojunction interfaces and thus acting low loss optical waveguides. In addition, by providing an optical obstacle region in the vicinity of the window region, higher order modes in horizontal transverse mode oscillations are suppressed, and thereby extremely high optical power output at the fundamental mode can be obtained without causing catastrophic optical damage on the reflective surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4282405
Abstract: A speech analyzer with improved pitch period extraction and improved accuracy of voiced/unvoiced decision comprises circuits for calculating autocorrelation coefficients forwardly and backwardly with respect to time. Reference members for the forward and the backward calculation are those successively prescribed ones of windowed samples of a signal representative of speech sound which are placed in each window period farther from a trailing and a leading end thereof, respectively. Members to be joined to the respective reference members for forward and backward calculation of each autocorrelation coefficient are displaced therefrom by a joining interval farther from the leading and the trailing ends, respectively. The joining interval is varied between a shortest and a longest pitch period of the speech sound stepwise by a spacing between two successive windowed samples.

  • Patent number: 4281709
Abstract: The present invention relates to a thermal heat pump consisting of a heat pipe in which the vapor passage between the heat transfer zone to the heat supply and the heat transfer zone to the heat removal section has a cross section which varies across its length. The variable cross-sectional vapor passage first increases and then decreases the rate of vapor flow, and a further heat transfer zone with either heat supply or removal is located in the area of increased vapor velocity. The cross-sectional variation of the vapor passage in the heat pipe between the two outermost heat transfer zones is advantageously brought about by a displacement body arranged internally of the heat pipe with a particular surface contour.

  • Patent number: 4282403
Abstract: In a pattern recognition device according to pattern matching, one or more specific dimensions of vector components are memorized for each reference pattern feature vector sequence in a reference pattern memory for the reference pattern feature vector sequences. A warping function for time-normalizing input pattern feature vectors of a sequence and the vectors of each reference pattern feature vector sequence is determined so as to minimize the difference between a pattern represented by the specific vector components of the specific dimension or dimensions and another pattern represented by the vector components corresponding in the input pattern feature vector sequence to the specific reference pattern feature vector components as regards the dimensions of a space in which each input or reference pattern feature vector is defined. The input pattern feature vector sequence and each reference pattern feature vector sequence are subjected to nonlinear pattern matching with reference to the warping function.

  • Patent number: 4280575
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for cutting and metering slabs or bales of unvulcanized rubber to be fed to a single rubber mixing machine. The apparatus includes a conveyor belt and a carriage arranged to transport bales of rubber along parallel paths. A cutting machine is positioned to cut a slice off a bale carried by said carriage. By arranging for the carriage to undergo back and forth movement while intermittently effecting transverse feed of the bale, the cutting machine cuts a succession of slices off the one bale. To make up a load of rubber of a required weight, whole bales are transferred to a hopper via the conveyor belt until a weighing machine indicates that the required weight has almost been reached; thereafter the cut slices of rubber are added to the hopper under the control of the weighing machine to make up the weight required.

  • Patent number: 4280420
Abstract: An embroidery sewing machine is provided for automatically driving an embroidery frame along X and Y axes. The bed of the machine is provided with a pair of parallel slots extending parallel to the X axis. A pair of carriages extend through said slots and the opposite ends of a single Y-axis guide rod which extends parallel to the Y-axis are secured to said carriages. A traveller is movably guided along the guide rod and one of said carriages is movably guided along a similar X-axis guide rod mounted below the bed. A pair of servo motors each having a drive roller are disposed under the bed and the carriages and traveller are each provided with a plurality of rollers. Wires extend around the rollers and rotation of one of the servo motors drives the carriages upon which the Y-axis guide rod is mounted along the X-axis guide rod. The rotation of the other servo motor causes the traveller to be driven in the Y-axis direction along the Y-axis guide rod.

  • Patent number: 4280452
Abstract: A device for enhancing the starting of a diesel engine in which the current flow to the glow plugs of the engine during the warm-up time is controlled so as to heat the engine as quickly as possible without damage to the glow plugs. Each glow plug is connected in series with a low value resistance between an output terminal of the relay and one of the battery terminals. Also connected across the output terminal of the relay and the output battery terminal is a series combination of three resistors one of which is in thermal contact with the first resistor. A comparator is connected to the middle points of the Wheatstone bridge circuit thus formed. Relay operating means is provided to open the relay contacts when an output signal is produced by the comparator indicating that the glow plug temperature is sufficiently high. On-off cycling of the current flow to the glow plug is continued until the engine is ready to start.
