Patent number: 4648057Abstract: A nonlinear technique for high-resolution data processing produces high-rlution power spectra from the output of a conventional processor. First, a "guess" of the spectral estimate is formed. Then the spectral estimate is convolved with the system response function to produce estimated output levels. The differences between the estimated output levels and the measured output levels are used to modify the spectral estimate to produce a new "guess". This process is repeated until certain criteria are satisfied.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1984Date of Patent: March 3, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Ronald A. Patent number: 4611929Abstract: A satellite method for measuring sea surface temperature uses simultaneous overage by two satellites in the same spectral window plus a simplified atmospheric radiative transfer model. A geostationary satellite and any polar orbiting satellite provide nearly coincident infrared imagery of a given area with points of equal and unequal observation angles. The calibration curve of the data for one satellite is adjusted to match the temperatures of the better calibrated satellite data along the equal angle points. A difference image is obtained from the resulting two satellite temperature images. The difference image together with the two observation angles and the temperature of the more accurate satellite radiometer are input to a suitable atmospheric model to obtain sea surface temperature at each point in the study area. The result is an accurate sea surface temperature for each point within a given area which is corrected for a spatially variant atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1983Date of Patent: September 16, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Ronald J. Patent number: 4480916Abstract: An interferometer for measuring optical surfaces which is capable of very high sensitivity. A HeNe laser light is converted into a circular polarized beam, spatially filtered and collimated. The light beam is passed through a photoelastic modulator for modulating the relative phase of the two polarization states of the optical field of the beam. The beam is then passed through a ROCHON prism which splits the beam into two orthogonally polarized components. One beam is reflected off the optical surface that is being measured and is recombined with the undeviated beam. The resulting irradiance distribution oscillates in the modulation frequency and the phase of the oscillation is dependent upon the optical path difference between the two beams. The detected interference signal is processed to extract the phase information.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1982Date of Patent: November 6, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Noah Bareket, Wayne W. Metheny

Patent number: 4315609Abstract: A target locating and missile guidance system comprising reconnaissance araft equipped with laser or radar range-measuring apparatus in conjunction with a plurality of selectively predetermined ground stations. Range and altitude of the aircraft relative to a detected surface target are obtained at two or more points on its flight path. The positions of the aircraft with respect to the ground stations are simultaneously determined by pulse-time-of-arrival technique. Using triangulation techniques the location of the target is determined with respect to a pulse grid coordinate system associated with the ground stations. At any time after the determination of the location of the target, properly timed signals from the ground stations or command signals based upon time-of-arrival data with respect to pulses from the missile are used to provide accurate guidance of the missile to the target.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1971Date of Patent: February 16, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: James D. Patent number: 4201987Abstract: A method for determining antenna near-fields from measurements on a spherical surface. Phase and intensity values are measured by scanning a probe antenna over a spherical surface. The method applies both to planar or conformal antennas. The spherical surface may be in the Fresnel or Fraunhofer regions. The field at the antenna is computed utilizing the complex conjugate of the measured field. As a result, the source antenna at the point at which the antenna radiating field is evaluated is inside the measurement surface. Far-field patterns can be computed from the near-fields reconstructed from the spherical hologram surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1978Date of Patent: May 6, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Gus P.
