  • Patent number: 4040272
Abstract: An accessory drive for rotating a fan used to cool a transversely mounted engine in a vehicle. A declutchable device, such as a viscous fan drive, has one element driven by the engine. The other element is connected to one end of the core of an elongated flexible shaft. The other end of the core is connected to the fan which is mounted in a known manner relative to the radiator of the vehicle to draw cooling air through the radiator and thereby cool the engine. The mounting of the declutchable device ahead of the flexible shaft allows for a reduction in the angular velocity of the core thereby increasing the life of the flexible shaft.

  • Patent number: 4040439
Abstract: A cushion valve arrangement for reducing the rate of pressure build up and relieving pressure rebounds in a fluid conduit. The valve housing defines first and second fluid ports, a fluid passage communicating therebetween, and a cushion passage communicating between the fluid passage and the first and second fluid ports. A valve spool is disposed in the fluid passage and defines an axial bore, within which is disposed a slideable valve member. When the pressure and flow suddenly builds up, the valve member is biased to an open position permitting high pressure fluid to pass through the axial bore and radially out through a passage in the spool into the cushion passage from which the fluid flows to the other conduit.

  • Patent number: 4040254
Abstract: A hydrostatic transmission system is provided which is particularly well adapted for use in driving vehicles employing skid-steer drives. In the system disclosed two independent hydrostatic transmissions, each employing a variable displacement motor are utilized; and a pressure responsive valve is employed to sense the magnitude of the load on each of the motors and to permit shifting the motors from minimum displacement toward maximum upon the sensing of a load in excess of a predetermined valve. The variable displacement motors of the system are configured to create forces during operation tending to urge the motors to maximum displacement, and the pressure responsive valve operates to bias the motors to minimum displacement when they are loaded at a magnitude less than the predetermined valve.

  • Patent number: 4029180
Abstract: A rotation indication system having an improved sensing device for determining the velocity of a rotating body is provided. The improved sensing device is tubular in configuration and includes a source of magnetic flux and two pole pieces that define a split magnetic field. The sensing device is mounted in close proximity to a rotor which is connected to the rotating body. The rotor has apertures which interrupt the split magnetic field producing an output signal with a frequency proportional to the velocity of the rotating body. The sensing device is oriented relative to the rotor apertures so that each pole piece is alternatively in register with an aperture to produce the desired output signal. Since the sensing device is tubular in shape, it can be rotated about its axis to obtain the desired orientation with the rotor apertures, thus permitting the use of the sensing device with a wide range of rotor diameters having various aperture spacings.
