Patent number: 8133208Abstract: An injection control device having a metered/controlled injection rate proportional to the rate of withdrawal/injection, suitable for cosmetic as well as other applications is described. For example, after the cannula is advanced into an object, the cannula is withdrawn to create a tract or tunnel within the targeted area. As the cannula is withdrawn, filler material in the injection control device is uniformly deposited into the tract or tunnel via the automatic metering system. The automatic metering system incorporates a syringe activating mechanism coupled to a system which is capable of proportioning the deposition rate to the retraction/injection rate of the cannula. Accordingly, more consistent and uniform distribution of the material injected can be achieved with less cannula passes as well as requiring less dependence on the skills of the practitioner of this device.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2008Date of Patent: March 13, 2012Assignee: BSECS Holdings, LLCInventor: Hugh E. Hetherington

Patent number: 8119618Abstract: Inflammatory bowel diseases are represented by two idiopathic disorders, which include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis is restricted to the colon and involves uncertain and inflammation of the lining (mucosa) of the large intestine. Crohn's disease, on the other hand, can involve the mucosa of the small and/or large intestine and may involve deeper layers of the bowel wall. The present invention is a combination of 5-aminosalicylic acid and one or more antioxidants (e.g., N-acetylcysteine) for treating such inflammatory bowel diseases.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2009Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: The Board of Regents of the University of OklahomaInventor: Richard F. Patent number: 8110673Abstract: This invention relates to an aggregation sensor useful for the detection and analysis of aggregants in a sample, and methods, articles and compositions relating to such a sensor. The sensor comprises first and second optically active units, where energy may be transferred from an excited state of the first optically active unit to the second optically active unit. The second optically active unit is present in a lesser amount, but its relative concentration is increased upon aggregation, increasing its absorption of energy from the first optically active units. This increase in energy transfer can be detected in variety of formats to produce an aggregation sensing system for various aggregants, including for quantitation. Other variations of the inventions are described further herein.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2010Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Guillermo C. Patent number: 8109390Abstract: Improvements in a semiconductor wafer container including improvements in side protection to the wafers, improved cover design to minimize rotation, a simplified top cover orientation mechanism and an improved bottom holding mechanism for automation. The side protection to the wafers is with multiple staggered inner and outer walls. The improved cover design improves alignment of the top and bottom housings and minimizes rotation of the housings in transit or motion. The housings have a recessed tab ramp feature with bi-directional locking that also increases the rigidity of the containment device when the two housings are assembled. The improved bottom holding mechanism for automation is an integrated feature that is molded into the bottom housing and not assembled in a secondary operation. The molded integration reduces tolerance errors that are present in assembling multiple pieces and joining multiple pieces.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2009Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: Texchem Advanced Products Incorporated Sdn BhdInventors: James D Pylant, Alan L Waber

Patent number: 8071378Abstract: We have identified ZNF206, a novel repressor of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) differentiation. Repressing extra-embryonic endoderm development preserves the pluripotent state of human embryonic stem cells, and, conversely downregulating expression of ZNF206 in hESCs causes them to upregulate the expression of genes associated with the extra-embryonic endodermal lineage, down-regulate genes associated with the pluripotent state, and may lead to the further emergence of genes associated with even more differentiated lineages and phenotypes.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2008Date of Patent: December 6, 2011Assignee: Sanford-Burnham Medical Research InstituteInventors: Evan Yale Snyder, Rodolfo Gonzalez

Patent number: 8022246Abstract: Neurite outgrowth-promoting prostaglandins (NEPPs) and other electrophilic compounds bind to Keap1, a negative regulator of the transcription factor Nrf2, and prevent Keap1-mediated inactivation of Nrf2 and, thus, enhance Nrf2 translocation into the nucleus of neuronal cells. Therefore, neuroprotective compositions and related methods are provided that employ such neuroprotective compounds, and prodrugs of such compounds, to cause dissociation of Nrf2 from a Keap1/Nrf2 complex.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2007Date of Patent: September 20, 2011Assignee: The Burnham Institute for Medical ResearchInventors: Stuart Lipton, Takumi Satoh

Patent number: 7968714Abstract: The present invention concerns an improved optical method and optical sensing device for determining the levels of polyhydroxyl-substituted organic molecules in vitro and/or in vivo in aqueous media. The range of detection is between about 400 and 800 nm. In particular, a sensory devise is implemented in a mammal to determine sugar levels. Specifically, a dye is combined with a conjugated nitrogen-containing heterocyclic aromatic boronic acid-substituted bis-onium compound in the presence of a sugar, such as fructose or glucose. The viologens are preferred as the aromatic conjugated nitrogen-containing boronic acid substituted compounds. The method is useful to determine sugar levels in a human being.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2008Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Bakthan Singaram, Ritchie A. Patent number: 7964402Abstract: We used Accutaseâ„¢, a commercially available cell detachment solution, for single cell propagation of pluripotent hESCs. Unlike trypsin dissociation, Accutase treatment does not significantly affect the plating efficiency of hESC dissociation into single cells. Cultures dissociated with Accutase to single cells at each passage maintain a higher proportion of pluripotent cells as compared to collagenase-passaged hESCs. Accutase-treated hESCs can be grown to a high density as monolayers, and yet retain their pluripotency.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2007Date of Patent: June 21, 2011Assignee: Sanford-Burnham Medical Research InstituteInventors: Alexey Terskikh, Ruchi Bajpai
