  • Patent number: 6251970
Abstract: A heat absorbing coating having a plurality of micro-capsules each being an encapsulant shell and a heat absorbing material within the shell, and a carrier adherable to a substrate and throughout which the micro-capsules are dispersed. The heat absorbing material is preferably a phase change material and can be non-limitedly chosen from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polywax, and combinations thereof. Shell material can be a metal such as copper, for example, or a polymer. The carrier can be a sprayable polymer mix which provides significant efficacy in uniform application to a substrate. An inventive substrate structure, such as an aircraft structure for example, has thereon the above-defined coating in an amount sufficient to absorb a sufficient amount of heat from the substrate to substantially inhibit thermal erosion in normal operating environments.

  • Patent number: 6252505
Abstract: An on-site environment monitoring system including at least one on-site environment condition sensor, an on-site alarm signal, and an on-site alert system. The monitoring system includes an on-site alert system having an on-site programmable microprocessor for activating the on-site alarm signal and in communication with the at least one environment condition sensor. The microprocessor is programmable to thereby provide pre-set respective ranges of environment condition values such that activation of the on-site alarm signal occurs when at least one on-site sensed environment condition value is below or above the programmed pre-set range of values. The present system achieves local control of environmental factors by providing on-site monitoring coupled with on-site alerting to thereby facilitate correction of unwanted ambient conditions by on-site personnel without requiring network-monitoring interaction and consequent time consumption.

  • Patent number: 6246729
Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding a phase encoded data signal utilizes windowed data which is transformed into real and imaginary frequency components thereof. The real and imaginary frequency components are converted into phase and magnitude information. The magnitude information is used to calculate a threshold based upon a signal-to-noise ratio, and the phase of the data signal is corrected by identifying and sorting magnitude peaks. The data signal is differentially demodulated and the demodulated data is then multiplied by a correlation sequence so as to facilitate its being converted into a binary number.

  • Patent number: 6236353
Abstract: Presented in this invention is a technique for producing a null in the frequency spectrum of an FM signal pulse, the null matching an interference that has been superposed on the signal pulse. By matching the null to the interference, the energy in the frequency spectrum is shifted in such a way that when the interference is rejected by a band elimination filter, none of the useful energy would be discarded along with the rejected interference. Consequently, a signal resulting from the technique has a much higher amplitude than previously filtered signals. This leads to the signal being more readily recognized by detection systems, such as a radar detector.

  • Patent number: 6231793
Abstract: A method for rapidly manufacturing “green-state” ceramic matrix composite components, components made from this method, and a resin/catalyst precursor mixture used in the method. The method includes manufacturing a component by preparing the precursor mixture by mixing a requisite quantity of a polymer-derived ceramic precursor resin, a catalyst, a discontinuous reinforcing fiber and filler material, and then loading this precursor mixture in a preheated mold. The precursor mixture then is cured in the mold to form the component which is porous. Thereafter, the component is reinfilitrated with a resin to at least partially fill the pores of the component. This method yields a ceramic matrix composite component that is cured in approximately one minute as well as a resin/catalyst precursor mixture that can be stored in excess of four weeks.

  • Patent number: 6227487
Abstract: Aerodynamic control apparatus which deflects a control-surface-member into the airstream for creating drag on an aircraft. This drag flap mechanism includes a strut and hinge plate which together constrain the control-surface-member to move in a coupled manner about mutually perpendicular axes. There is an actuator from the controls of the pilot which moves the hinge plate which in turn moves the control-surface-member in that coupled manner. It moves between a fully feathered position presenting minimal resistance to the airstream and a fully operative position presenting maximum resistance to the airstream. The preferred embodiment of the drag flap mechanism is as a continuation of the wing tips where two control-surface-members are hinged about a common axis on the hinge plate so they can open like a split flap. The motion of these two control-surface-members are constrained to allow the force of the air opening the two surfaces to assist in pushing the two surfaces more into the airstream.
