Abstract: Antibiotics RK-1061s having a novel chemical structure and a method of production thereof. They have a structural formula represented by general formula(I) wherein A represents R1 or R1CH(OR2)CH2. R2 represents 3-methylglutaric acid residue and R3 represents a sulfate group or a hydrogen atom. The process comprises culturing a ray fungus belonging to the genus Streptomyces and isolating RK-1061s from the culture. Streptomyces sp. SN-1061Ms (FERM BP-5800) is capable of stably producing RK-1061 at a high productivity.
Abstract: In one embodiment of the invention, a method of manufacturing a semiconductor device comprises the steps of: a) providing an organic semiconductor layer; b) depositing a reactive species on a portion of the organic semiconductor layer; and c) reacting the reactive species with the portion of the organic layer to form a dielectric layer.
Abstract: A frontlighting illumination system for selectively illuminating a nonemissive electronic display includes display elements in communication with at least one light source. The electronic display includes a nonemissive electro-optic medium; and a light transmissive element. Light transmitted through the light transmissive element illuminates the display medium. The propagation of light that is directed through the light transmissive element towards the microencapsulated electrophoretic display medium is substantially undeflected at the interface between the surface of the light transmissive element and the microencapsulated electrophoretic display medium. A reflector is included for directing light from the light source through the light transmissive element.
Abstract: Novel addressing schemes for controlling electronically addressable displays include a scheme for rear-addressing displays, which allows for in-plane switching of the display material. Other schemes include a rear-addressing scheme which uses a retroreflecting surface to enable greater viewing angle and contrast. Another scheme includes an electrode structure that facilitates manufacture and control of a color display. Another electrode structure facilitates addressing a display using an electrostatic stylus. Methods of using the disclosed electrode structures are also disclosed. Another scheme includes devices combining display materials with silicon transistor addressing structures.
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for producing fusion proteins with the heterodimeric cytokine, interleukin-12. In order to insure that the proper ratio of fused and non-fused subunits are obtained in the fusion protein, a specific stepwise approach to genetic engineering is used. This consists of first expressing the non-fused p40 IL-12 subunit in a production cell line, followed by or simultaneously expressing in the same cell, a second recombinant fusion protein consisting of the fused polypeptide linked by a peptide bond to the p35 subunit of IL-12. Molecules containing the p35 fusion protein cannot be secreted from the transfected mammalian cell without first complexing in a one to one ratio with the p40 subunit, thus ensuring the production of active heterodimeric fusion proteins.

Abstract: Semiconductor-based devices, and methods for making the devices, involve a first device that includes a buried channel layer, a dielectric layer, and a compositionally graded spacer layer. The spacer layer includes a first material and a second material, and is located between the buried channel layer and the dielectric layer. A second device includes a buried channel layer, a relaxed surface layer, and a spacer layer located between the buried channel layer and the relaxed surface layer. The spacer layer has a composition that is different from a composition of the relaxed layer. The spacer layer and the relaxed surface layer each have bandgap offsets relative to the buried channel layer to reduce a parasitic channel conduction. A substrate for fabrication of devices, and methods for making the substrate, involves a substrate that includes a first layer, such as a silicon wafer, a substantially uniform second layer, and a graded-composition third layer.

Abstract: A method and system for normalizing optical spectra using a non-uniform segment normalization. A spectrum is obtained and is represented as a function of wavelength as an amplitude at each of a plurality of wavelengths. At least one segment of the spectrum is selected, each selected segment being bounded by an upper wavelength and a lower wavelength. A normalization factor is computed as the sum of the areas for each of the selected segments. The spectrum is normalized by dividing at least one amplitude of the spectrum by the normalization factor. Segments can be selected with different wavelength ranges, that is, segments can be non-uniform. Test specimens can be categorized based on an analysis of normalized spectra. In particular, the specimen to be tested can be human cervical tissue, and the state of health of the tissue can be determined.

Abstract: Circuits and methods for use in amplifying amplitude and phase modulated signals. A circuit uses a combiner with dual parallel signal amplifiers feeding it. The signal amplifiers have a low output impedance while the combiner does not provide any isolation between its inputs from the signal amplifiers. As in other Chireix architectures, the signals from the signal amplifiers are phase modulated prior to being fed to the combiner. The combiner then combines these two signals and, depending on how these two signals are combined, the resulting output of the combiner is amplitude modulated. The signal amplifiers may be Class D or Class F amplifiers to provide high efficiency amplification of the signals.
