  • Patent number: 8336388
Abstract: A method for monitoring a leg of an oilfield platform, the platform having a plurality of legs, each leg with a plurality of chords, each chord with a corresponding rack, the platform including a rack-and-pinion leg jacking system with a motor and gear system with pinions for jacking the legs up. The method, in certain aspects, including providing a load monitor with a strain sensing apparatus on a selected pinion of each rack-and-pinion system, providing a rack path differential monitoring system for monitoring rotation of the selected pinions to provide an indication of a linear displacement of the selected pinions for comparison to indicate rack path differential for racks of the legs of the platform.

  • Patent number: 8307921
Abstract: Drilling apparatus comprises: a body; a pilot hole-drilling assembly (14) mounted to the body for drilling a pilot hole of a first diameter; and a hole-opening assembly (16) mounted to the body for opening the pilot hole to a larger second diameter. The apparatus is configured such that the pilot hole-drilling assembly (14) will drill at a faster rate than the hole-opening assembly (16) for a given unit loading. As the pilot hole-drilling assembly (14) has the capability to drill at a faster rate than the hole-opening assembly (16), the pilot hole-drilling assembly will tend to experience relatively low weight-on-bit (WOB). The pilot hole-drilling assembly (14) will thus tend to maintain a vertical orientation. The hole-opening assembly (16) will follow the path of the pilot hole, while opening the hole to the required diameter.

  • Patent number: 8293243
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of treating mammals affected by, for example, a hyperproliferative disease such as cancer, by administering a tumor-targeted superantigen and a chemotherapeutic agent, whereby the administration of the tumor-targeted superantigen and chemotherapeutic agent reduce the antibody response and enhance the T cell response. The superantigen, wild-type or modified, is fused to a target-seeking moiety, such as an antibody or an antibody active fragment. The combined administration of a superantigen and a chemotherapeutic agent provides enhanced therapeutic effects in a treated animal.

  • Patent number: 8235195
Abstract: An engine clutch is provided. The clutch includes a drive shaft rotated by the engine, an eccentric shaft selectively rotated by the drive shaft, a clutch fluid, a plurality of pistons, and a fluid regulator. The eccentric shaft is positionable in an opening of the drive shaft for rotation thereby. The eccentric shaft has cylinders extending radially therethrough and a central channel extending longitudinally therethrough. The clutch fluid flows between the cylinders and channel. Each piston is slidably positionable in a cylinder in response to flow of clutch fluid. The pistons have an outer end in constant contact with the drive shaft via a bearing. The fluid regulator is positionable in the central channel for selectively restricting flow of clutch fluid whereby rotational speed of the eccentric shaft is adjusted. The eccentric shaft is connectable to a device, such as a fan, for rotation therewith.

  • Patent number: 8196472
Abstract: An ultrasonic probe apparatus for detecting flaws in a tubular includes a probe house. The probe house has an axial axis, a central cavity lying along the axial axis, and a bottom face adapted for placement on the tubular. The bottom face of the probe house has an opening in the middle. A probe support is disposed within the central cavity and rotatable about the axial axis of the probe house. An ultrasonic probe is mounted on the probe support and has a scanning face exposed to the opening of the bottom face of the probe house. The scanning face is tiltable relative to a selected plane of the tubular by rotation of the probe support about the axial axis of the probe house.

  • Patent number: 8167051
Abstract: A fluid actuated downhole tool for inducing movement of a downhole apparatus is described. The tool comprises a body for coupling to downhole apparatus, the body being adapted to accommodate now of fluid therethrough and including a flow-modifying arrangement for modifying the flow of fluid through the body. The flow-modifying arrangement is configurable in an inactive configuration and in an active configuration. The fluid activated tool is selectively operated from the surface by varying an operating condition which causes the flow through the tool to either bypass or flow through the flow-modifying arrangement to induce movement of the downhole apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8083011
Abstract: A turbine matrix sleeve in accordance with the invention includes an inner cylindrical structure made up of a first material. The inner cylindrical structure may include multiple blades and multiple channels running between the blades along an outside diameter thereof. The inner cylindrical structure further includes threads, such as right-hand or left-hand threads, on an outer surface thereof. An outer layer, made up of a second material different from the first material, is integrally bonded to the threads. This outer layer may be optionally embedded with hardened inserts or buttons, such as PDC inserts, diamond inserts, TSP inserts, or the like. The threaded surface on the inner cylindrical structure significantly improves the bond between the outer layer and the inner cylindrical structure and creates a mechanical lock therebetween.

  • Patent number: 8069926
Abstract: A downhole valve comprises a tubular body and a valve member. The valve member is normally closed and in the closed position may prevent or restrict passage of a working fluid through the body. The valve member is movable to an open position, a first working fluid pressure differential being necessary to move the valve member from the closed position and a lower second working fluid pressure differential being necessary to maintain the valve member in the open position.

  • Patent number: 7967299
Abstract: A seal comprises a metal seal ring with a first slanted mating surface for sealing engagement with a mating surface on a body and a second slanted mating surface for sealing engagement with a mating surface on a bonnet. The mating surfaces are the same angle as measured from the axis of the ram of the BOP. The seal also defines opposing slanting surfaces which provide a degree of flexure to the seal for sealing engagement. With the application of pressure on the inside surfaces of the seal, the mating surfaces are pressed even harder against the mating surfaces of the body and bonnet.
