Abstract: A host object representing a user, a service object representing a service, and a connection object linking the two may be utilized in order to provide Quality of Service (QoS). The host object and/or connection object may contain a provisioning scheme defining a limit on traffic, which can be provided through either a local or remote programming mechanism. When traffic flows through the host object and/or connection object, the appropriate provisioning scheme is utilized to determine which packets to discard.
Abstract: An arbitrary surface optical element, such as a mirror for use in a rear projection television, includes a non-optical portion and an optical portion. The non-optical portion circumscribes the optical portion and has a thickness greater than the optical portion. Accordingly, the two portions cool at approximately the same rate, thereby minimizing warpage from differential cooling.

Abstract: In order to separate individual, in particular biological, objects from a, in particular biological, preparation the use of a support device is proposed in which a laser light absorbent membrane (1), for example of polyester or polyethylene-naphthalene, to which the biological preparation for processing is to be applied is retained and tensioned, preferably together with carrier means (2) located thereunder, for example, a glass object carrier or a thicker membrane, by means of a retaining device (3, 4) configured in particular as a frame, so that a compact unit is provided. The support device according to the invention is particularly suitable for isolating individual biological objects from a surrounding biological material by means of laser irradiation and for catapulting said biological objects into a collecting device. The combination of a laser light absorbent membrane (1) and a laser light transparent membrane (2) as support for the laser light absorbent membrane (1) is particularly advantageous.
Abstract: An apparatus includes an electromagnetically conductive assembly including a first member having a first end and a second end and a second member disposed between the first end and the second end of the first member. The second member and the first end of the first member define a first gap. The second member and the second end of the first member define a second gap. A movable member moves with respect to the conductive member. A first magnet is coupled to the movable member and is disposed a distance from the first gap. A second magnet is coupled to the movable member and is disposed a distance from the second gap.
Abstract: An apparatus and method of control for converting DC (direct current) power from a solar photovoltaic source to AC (alternating current) power. A novel DC-to-AC power converter topology and a novel control method are disclosed. This combination of topology and control are very well suited for photovoltaic microinverter applications. Also, a novel variant of this control method is illustrated with a number of known photovoltaic DC-to-AC power converter topologies. The primary function of both control methods is to seek the maximum power point (MPP) of the photovoltaic source with novel, iterative, perturb and observe control algorithms. The control portion of this invention discloses two related control methods, both an improvement over prior art by having greatly improved stability, dynamic response and accuracy.
Abstract: A method and apparatus of encouraging distribution, registration, and purchase of free copyable software and other digital information which is accessed on a User's System via a Programmer's Program. Software tools which can be incorporated into a Programmer's Program allow the User to access Advanced Features of the Programmer's Program only in the presence of a valid Password which is unique to a particular Target ID generated on an ID-Target such as the User's System. Advanced features will thus re-lock if the Password is copied to another ID-target. If a valid Password is not present, the User is invited to obtain one, and provided with the means of doing so, and of installing that Password in a place accessible to the User's System on subsequent occasions. The present invention also provides Programmers with means to invoke business operations as well as computational operations with their programs, and thus to automatically obtain payment from Users who elect to obtain passwords.
Abstract: A process for automatically monitoring the packet error rate of a logical channel in a cable television DOCSIS data transmission system and automatically altering the bit rate on the channel or sending a message to a cable operator recommending a change in burst profile and bit rate. The preferred embodiment of the process comprises determining the dominant noise type and SNR of the channel and selecting a set of burst profiles best adapted for the dominant noise type and selecting an initial burst profile based upon the SNR. Then the packet error rate of the channel is monitored and compared to one or more thresholds to decide whether a change in bit rate is required to bring the packet error rate within limits. If a change is bit rate is indicated, automatically selecting a new burst profile with an appropriately changed bit rate and automatically generating and sending a UCD message defining the channel's new burst profile.

Abstract: A planar fuel cell comprising an electrode-membrane-electrode assembly, wherein the membrane includes a fabric having a warp fibers which are continuous insulating fibers of an electrically insulating material and weft fibers comprising of both fibers of the insulating material and fibers of an electrically conducting material in an alternating fashion, so as to form insulating areas and conducting areas, respectively.
Abstract: A data communications network may be browsed using one or more tokens by receiving an input keyword string from a user, determining whether there is a match between the input keyword string and a database of keyword strings, determining a category of the keyword string, rendering to the user at least one service identifier associated with the category, receiving a user-selected service identifier in response to the rendering, substituting at least one variable in a resource locator template associated with the service with a string based at least in part on the keyword string entered by the user and launching the resource locator. According to one aspect, a special rendering of a hyperlink corresponding to the resource locator is used to indicate private data will be disclosed upon launching the resource locator.
Abstract: Dynamic rate limiting adjustment may be provided by sampling actual output rates from a rate limited device and utilizing this information to modify configured traffic limits. This allows the device to achieve actual output rates much closer to the desired rate limits for users and services.

Abstract: The objective of the present invention is to enable a speaker to visually confirm whether or not his voice has reached a listener. In order to achieve this objective, in the present invention, the listener terminal generates a reception result for voice data, and the talker terminal displays the reception state based on this reception result. It is a further objective of the present invention to enable conversational timing to be achieved easily. In order to achieve this objective, in the present invention, the talker terminal sends utterance data prior to sending voice data, this utterance data being shorter than the voice data. The listener terminal displays the talker terminal's utterance based on this utterance data. Another objective of the present invention is to deliver voice data from the talker terminal to a particular listener terminal only, without having to form a private group.

Abstract: A connection-trace standard is used to collect cell-drop information from switches in the path of a network connection in order to identify non-performing switches. Special codes may be inserted in the vendor specific fields of the trace transit list information elements of specified messages. These codes indicate that that cell-drop information is to be collected along with the trace. Switches that carry the connection may then read the codes in the messages and populate appropriate information into connection-trace messages. Eventually, cell-drop information from each of the relevant switches may reach the source of the trace. This information may then be accessed through a Management Information Base (MIB) or via command-line interface commands. This automates and improves the speed of identifying non-performing switches.
