Abstract: A method of making a polyester container having an enhanced level of crystallinity in the sidewall while maintaining a low level of crystallinity in a thickened base portion. The container is particularly useful as a refillable container which can withstand higher caustic wash temperatures and exhibits reduced flavor carryover, or as a hot-fill container. According to the method, a sidewall-forming section of a preform is initially expanded, heated to contract and crystallize the same, and than reexpanded; a base-forming portion of the preform is shielded from the heat treatment and is expanded either before or after the heat treatment step.

Abstract: A process for preparing S-(-)-3-morpholino-4-(3-tert-butylamino-2-hydroxypropoxy)-1,2,5-thiadiazol e hemihydrate, i.e. S-timolol hemihydrate, wherein the compound is crystallized in optically pure form as the hemihydrate from a mixture containing an organic solvent, water and S-timolol base. This process can be used in the purification of S-timolol, especially for the removal of the corresponding R-enantiomer.
Abstract: This relates to the stretch blow molding of a generally rectangular container specifically of an oval or oblong cross section. Customarily, stretch blow molded containers are formed from preforms which generally have a substantially cylindrical body which terminates in a hemispherical end. However, it has been found that in the stretch blow molding of a container of an oval or oblong section, because the sides are much wider than the ends, there is an uneven stretching and distribution of the material of the preform. This particularly relates to a preform having a modified container base forming portion which is of a reduced wall thickness and which includes an intermediate frusto conical part. By so shaping the base forming portion of the preform, correct amounts of material are provided for forming the base construction of a container.
Abstract: A discharge module positionable between a high-voltage power supply and an X-ray tube for discharging any capacitive voltage remaining on the cable connecting the same. The discharge module includes a low-voltage control portion which is optically coupled to a high-voltage portion that includes a switch for activating a discharging resistor series. The module also monitors the current through the X-ray tube to initiate a fault if the current exceeds a predetermined maximum.
Abstract: A device for measuring the volume of a gas comprises a cylinder and a piston movably mounted in the cylinder. A first membrane sealingly connects the piston with the inner wall of the cylinder. The cylinder, the piston and the first membrane determine a measuring space in which a measuring conduit for the gas to be measured debouches. A second membrane also sealingly connects the piston with the cylinder inner wall. The first and second membranes determine an intermediate space in which an underpressure is generated during operation.
Abstract: Polymeric sheets having on one or both sides a fabric texture and, optionally, a network of elongated channels in the interior of the structural framework of the sheets are disclosed. The sheets are useful as burn coverings where they serve as synthetic, temporary replacements for damaged or missing skin. The sheets have physiologic properties similar to human skin, excellent drapability characteristics, recessed portions which provide a reservoir for wound debris and, in certain embodiments, a dermal surface which permits wound adherence by fibroblastic ingrowth. In one embodiment, laminated sheets in which only one side has a fabric texture are prepared by (1) applying one or more layers of polymer to a support surface, (2) partially embedding a sheet having a fabric texture in the layer of polymer, (3) curing or hardening the polymer to form a composite of the sheet and polymer, and (4) separating the composite from the forming surface.
Abstract: The use as antimocrobial agents of organosilicon quaternary ammonium compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein m+n is 16 to 19, m is 1 to 6, and n is 13 to 17 or m+n is 20 to 23, m is 4 to 11 and n is 9 to 17; X is a halogen; and Y is a hydrolyzable radical or hydroxy group.Substrates, such as cellulose fabrics, can be impregnated with these compounds, so that the growth of disease causing microorganisms in and on the substrates is inhibited.
