  • Patent number: 8307557
Abstract: A foot operated cutter has an elongated handle with a pair of cutting jaws mounted on one end thereof and a gripping member at the other end thereof. The cutting jaws are mounted on separate spaced apart pivot axles. The upper end of each jaw is pivotally coupled to a movement arm and the two movement arms are pivotally coupled to each other. One movement arm is coupled to a foot operable lever. Movement of the lever causes the movement arms to pivot and move the upper ends of the jaws apart from each other resulting in the lower ends of the jaws coming together in a cutting action. A biasing member preferably urges the jaws to an open position. An adjustable stop is preferably provided and prevents the lever from putting too much force on the jaws.

  • Patent number: 7711123
Abstract: In one aspect, the invention divides an audio signal into auditory events, each of which tends to be perceived as separate and distinct, by calculating the spectral content of successive time blocks of the audio signal (5-1), calculating the difference in spectral content between successive time blocks of the audio signal (5-2), and identifying an auditory event boundary as the boundary between successive time blocks when the difference in the spectral content between such successive time blocks exceeds a threshold (5-3). In another aspect, the invention generates a reduced-information representation of an audio signal by dividing an audio signal into auditory events, each of which tends to be perceived as separate and distinct, and formatting and storing information relating to the auditory events (5-4). Optionally, the invention may also assign a characteristic to one or more of the auditory events (5-5).

  • Patent number: 7660424
Abstract: Using an M:N variable matrix, M audio input signals, each associated with a direction, are translated to N audio output signals, each associated with a direction, wherein N is larger than M, M is two or more and N is a positive integer equal to three or more. The variable matrix is controlled in response to measures of: (1) the relative levels of the input signals, and (2) the cross-correlation of the input signals so that a soundfield generated by the output signals has a compact sound image in the nominal ongoing primary direction of the input signals when the input signals are highly correlated, the image spreading from compact to broad as the correlation decreases and progressively splitting into multiple compact sound images, each in a direction associated with an input signal, as the correlation continues to decrease to highly uncorrelated.

  • Patent number: 7610205
Abstract: In one alternative, an audio signal is analyzed using multiple psychoacoustic criteria to identify a region of the signal in which time scaling and/or pitch shifting processing would be inaudible or minimally audible, and the signal is time scaled and/or pitch shifted within that region. In another alternative, the signal is divided into auditory events, and the signal is time scaled and/or pitch shifted within an auditory event. In a further alternative, the signal is divided into auditory events, and the auditory events are analyzed using a psychoacoustic criterion to identify those auditory events in which the time scaling and/or pitch shifting procession of the signal would be inaudible or minimally audible. Further alternatives provide for multiple channels of audio.

  • Patent number: 7551745
Abstract: A single control determines both volume and the degree of compression in the reproduction of motion picture soundtracks. For some settings of the control, compression or limiting reduces the highest levels on a movie soundtrack, leaving the dialogue level substantially unchanged, thus removing the reason for complaints from the audience without the danger of making the dialogue too quiet for intelligibility.

  • Patent number: 6807528
Abstract: Many low bit rate digital audio encoding systems, including Dolby Digital and MPEG-2 AAC generate data streams in which unused dummy, fill, stuffing, or null bits exist whenever the bit allocation function in the encoder does not utilize all available bits from a bit pool. Instead, all or some of such wasted bits are used to carry information. This can be accomplished after an encoder generates a bitstream. The resulting bitstream is analyzed to identify the locations of some or all of the unused bits. Some or all of the identified unused bits are then replaced with information-carrying bits to embed information-carrying bits in locations formerly occupied by unused bits. Alternatively, instead of replacing some or all unused bits in the bitstream with information-carrying bits after encoding, a modified encoder may insert information-carrying bits in some or all of the unused bit positions during the encoding process.

  • Patent number: 6725412
Abstract: Codeword-position-caused encoder latency is reduced by avoiding the requirement for knowledge of the message prior to generating an error detecting or concealing codeword associated with the message. A pseudo error detecting or concealing codeword is inserted in place of the normal error detecting or concealing codeword appropriate for the segment of information to which the error detecting or concealing codeword relates. In order to satisfy the requirement of conventional decoders, the pseudo error detecting or concealing information must match or be appropriate for the segment so that the decoder sees the codeword and message segment as valid or error free. This is accomplished by modifying or perturbing at least a portion of the segment to which the pseudo codeword relates. The invention is particularly useful for maintaining the backward compatibility of audio data encoding formats in which the minimum latency is too long (e.g.
