Patent number: 5535804Abstract: A pet door kit made of frame sides and door sides all of which may be assembled onto a mesh screen panel before the panel is required to be cut to allow for pivoting of the door. Advantageously each frame side is formed as an integral molding with an associated door side so that the skill of the installer is not required to locate the door within the frame. Economically, the two moldings thus provided are identical and securing members, i.e. pins are integrally provided to pass from one molding, through the mesh, and be force fitted into holes in the other molding. The assembly of the two moldings simultaneously and quickly assembles the door and frame onto the firm unsevered rigid support of the screen panel.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1994Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Inventor: Robert J. Patent number: 5534869Abstract: An open transmission line system for locating an entity (110) moving along a defined pathway uses transmissions from a remote, independent transmitter (106), conveniently a commercial radio or television station. The system comprises two receivers, both tuned to the frequency of the transmission. One receiver (101) receives signals directly from the transmitter (106) by means of an antenna (104). The other receiver (102) receives the signal from the transmitter (106) by way of an open transmission line (107). A processor (103) processes the signals from the two receivers to detect the entity. The system may use transmissions at different frequencies from plural mutually-spaced transmitters (402; 403; 404) in order to provide reliability and to minimize the effects of multi-path signals. The system may employ a variable velocity open transmission line (507), comprising a central conductor means (1100) having a permeable central element (1202) carrying a helically wound conductor (1201).Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1992Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Auratek Security Inc.Inventor: Robert K. Patent number: 5526414Abstract: A dynamically controlled routing (DCR) telecommunications network is formed by a plurality of network switching elements, each connected to at least one other by at least one circuit group for carrying calls therebetween, and a network processor connected to the network elements by data links. Each network switching element determines, for each call, a neighboring network element to which it should be routed. It does so by accessing a routing table which contains alternate routes to be attempted if a direct route either does not exist or cannot be used. The routing tables are updated periodically by the network controller. The DCR network functions as a group of nodes interconnected by links and routing takes place on a node-to-node basis.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1994Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Francois Bedard, Jean Regnier, France Caron

Patent number: 5510766Abstract: In an intrusion detection system comprising an open transmission line (10), for example a "leaky cable", and a receiver unit (12S,12T,14S,14T,16) for processing a radio frequency signal received by the line to detect perturbations caused by an intruder (28), problems of nonlinear sensitivity due to line attenuation are resolved by combining perturbation signals (R.sub.S, R.sub.T) from both ends of the open transmission line. A processor unit (18) computes logarithmic values of the perturbation signals from the opposite ends of the line and combines them to detect presence of an intruder. The sum of the logarithmic values may be used to determine presence of the intruder and the difference between them may be used to determine the location of the intruder relative to the end of the line. The processor may also use phase information from the two perturbation signals to facilitate detection in the presence of multipath effects. Patent number: 5481402Abstract: An tunable optical filter of the kind used, for example, in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems and tunable source applications, has an interference filter element which is pivotable to adjust the operating wavelength of the filter. In order to reduce polarization dependency as the angle of the interference filter element changes, the light beam to be filtered is passed through the filter element twice, the second time with its polarization state shifted, specifically orthogonal, relative to the polarization state during the first pass. As a result, polarization dependent effects are equalized.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1994Date of Patent: January 2, 1996Assignee: JDS Fitel Inc.Inventors: Yihao Cheng, Timothy P. Cutts, Gary S. Patent number: 5479488Abstract: In a telecommunications system, automatic directory assistance uses a voice processing unit comprising a lexicon of lexemes and data representing a predetermined relationship between each lexeme and calling numbers in a locality served by the automated directory assistance apparatus. The voice processing unit issues messages to a caller making a directory assistance call to prompt the caller to utter a required one of said lexemes. The unit detects the calling number originating a directory assistance call and, responsive to the calling number and the relationship data computes a probability index representing the likelihood of a lexeme being the subject of the directory assistance call. The unit employs a speech recognizer to recognize, on the basis of the acoustics of the caller's utterance and the probability index, a lexeme corresponding to that uttered by the caller.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1994Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: Bell CanadaInventors: Matthew Lennig, Robert D. Patent number: 5469277Abstract: In N.times.N optical couplers, such as are used in local area networks and backplanes of telecommunications and computer equipment, which use BRAGG volume diffraction means to couple light beams between the inputs and outputs, the number of gratings is reduced by means of so-called "grating degeneration" one grating can be shared by at least two wave pairs at the same time. In order to achieve this reduction, the directions of light waves in the dielectric slab (or the lateral positions of fibre ends) are suitable arranged. In other embodiments, a reduced number of gratings is achieved by using a "sandwiched" structure which uses multi-layered dielectric slabs. Both embodiments may be combined in the one coupler.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1992Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Assignee: University of OttawaInventors: Mohsen Kavehrad, Gang Yun

Patent number: 5455672Abstract: Attenuation of an optical fiber is measured by transmitting an optical signal having a predetermined wavelength to the fiber, and FSK modulating the optical signal with information identifying the wavelength and transmitted power of the optical signal. At a receiver, the optical signal is detected and the information is recovered by demodulation. Wavelength-dependent sensitivity information for the detector is read from a store in dependence upon the wavelength information and used to control the gain of an amplifier for amplifying a subsequently transmitted continuous wave optical signal used for attenuation measurement. The received power level of this optical signal is converted into a digital value and used with the transmitted power information to determine the fiber attenuation at the predetermined wavelength. Reference power levels are determined by connecting a jumper between a port and an external detector.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1994Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Exto-Electro-Optical Engineering Inc.Inventors: Joseph E.
