  • Patent number: 6859326
Abstract: Microlens arrays are defined with microlens elements that differ from each other in accordance with a probability distribution for shaping an optical beam having a prescribed intensity profile within a desired far-field scatter pattern. The differences include random variations in a sag profile corresponding to a surface shape of the microlenses, a boundary profile corresponding to a boundary of the microlenses, and a spatial distribution corresponding to the relative position of the microlenses within the array. The sag profile variations can be used to homogenize an intensity profile of the optical beam. The boundary profile variations within an irregular spatial distribution can be used to apply the prescribed intensity profile of the optical beam within the desired scatter pattern.

  • Patent number: 6796922
Abstract: A planetary gear 5 is contacted at its at least one tooth of all its teeth 51n with an end edge 23d facing an inner releasing part 23c of an inner peripheral surface of a receiving hole 23a irrespective of a rotational position of the planetary gear 5. By doing so, the planetary gear 5 is prevented from moving in the radial direction. As a result, the planetary gear 5 can be prevented from vibrating in the radial direction. Thus, vibrations of a planetary gear apparatus can be reduced, and the planetary gear and a carrier can be reduced in damage.

  • Patent number: 6789789
Abstract: A two-stage vaporizer includes two vaporizing stages joined by a vaporization chamber located gravitationally below the first vaporizing stage and gravitationally above the second vaporizing stage. A separator covering an outlet within the vaporization chamber allows vaporized precursor from both vaporizing stages to pass through the outlet to chemical vapor deposition system and prevents any remaining liquid precursor from passing through the outlet. The liquid precursor is premixed with carrier gas just prior to entry into the vaporizer. Additional flows of carrier gas pass through the two vaporizing stages in opposite directions to carry the vaporized precursor to the outlet.

  • Patent number: 6741361
Abstract: A system of frequency-scanning interferometry uses a computer system operating in accordance with a program for measuring distances or range, including measuring topographical information about test object surfaces. Interferometric data is detected using a single point detector or an array of such detectors and recorded (stored) in the computer system, and a series of measurements are taken over a range of illumination frequencies. The interferometric data varies in a sinusoidal manner with a change in illumination frequency at interference frequencies corresponding to particular measures of distance or range. A Fourier transform for locating peak interference frequencies is first limited in frequency space and second divided into stages to save processing time. A coarse spacing between Fourier frequency samples is used for a first approximation, and finer spacing between Fourier frequency samples are used in the vicinity of the first approximation to make a second more accurate approximation.

  • Patent number: 6705394
Abstract: Rapid thermal cycling of substrates in low-pressure processing environments is achieved by movable temperature conditioners located outside the processing environments. The substrates are mounted on thermally conductive pedestals for processing in the low-pressure environment. The temperature conditioners are movable both into and out of thermal contact with the pedestals outside the low-pressure environment to regulate transfers of heat through the pedestals between the substrates and the temperature conditioners. A translatable cooler block with a high thermal mass and a large interface area with the pedestal can be used as a temperature conditioner for more rapidly withdrawing heat from the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6696127
Abstract: A web of print media dispensable as individual sheets along lines of perforation includes a pattern of ties and slits that provide a more predictable resistance to manually separating the sheets from the web. The lines of perforation extend transversely with respect to a longitudinal dimension of the web and cross a longitudinal centerline between two edges of the web. The ties are weaker near the centerline of the web than near either of the two edges sufficient to relatively increase resistance to tearing along the lines of perforation starting near either of the two edges while relatively decreasing resistance to tearing along the same lines of perforation starting near the centerline of the web.

  • Patent number: 6694075
Abstract: Filter gratings are formed in optical waveguides having photosensitive cores by exposing the cores to actinic radiation in the form of interfering beams having peak intensities that are relatively displaced along an optical axis of the waveguides. Each of the interfering beams has a single-lobed intensity profile and a degree of spatial coherence required to achieve a desired fringe contrast between the two relatively displaced beams. Index modulations in the photosensitive core match the illumination (interference) pattern of the radiation. The relative displacement of the interfering beams reduces side lobes of the gratings' spectral responses by leveling the average refractive index of the index modulations. A second exposure with the two beams but without the beams' interference effects further levels the average refractive index.

  • Patent number: 6690690
Abstract: A wavelength tuning system adjusts an external cavity of a laser about two orthogonal axes for aligning features of a diffractive optic with a third orthogonal axis about which the diffractive optic is pivoted for providing selected wavelength feedback to the laser. A laser mount supports the laser, and a mounting arm supports both the diffractive optic and a reflective optic in a fixed orientation with respect to each other. A flexural member forms at least part of a connection between the mounting arm and the laser mount in a relative orientation for optically coupling the diffractive optic to the laser within the external cavity. The mounting arm is pivoted with respect to the laser mount about the pivot axis by an actuator for varying a wavelength of a diffracted portion of the output beam returned to the laser without significantly varying an angular orientation of the output beam with respect to the laser mount as reflected from the reflective optic.

  • Patent number: 6611378
Abstract: Thin-film interference filters are constructed with a generalized pattern of layers differing in both thickness and refractive index to produce spectral responses appropriate for adjusting optical power among a plurality of different wavelength channels. Each of the layers is composed of unit sub-layers having thicknesses equal to a quarter-wavelength thickness of a monitoring beam. Interference fluctuations of the monitoring beam associated with the deposition of the unit sub-layers enable a gain-flattening filter to achieve greater manufacturing accuracy by exploiting self-correcting effects of “turning point monitoring” techniques.
