  • Patent number: 6358352
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process whereby low-grade lumber, (i.e., lumber having surface defects such as knots, voids, wane, and bark pockets, and warp defects such as twist, bow, crook and sweep), is converted to higher grade lumber and panel products. The process of the present invention involves first categorizing low-grade lumber, arranging a specified number of the categorized low-grade lumber side by side in a manner which offsets the surface defects on adjacent lumber by a minimum distance, and then face-laminating the categorized low-grade lumber together to form a cant. Warp defects such as bow, twist and crook are also offset in the arrangement of the cant and are straightened through the clamping and bonding process. The cant is then re-sawn to produce new, laminated wood products of a higher grade, each new laminated wood product including portions of the original lumber.

  • Patent number: 6314749
Abstract: A method and system for fully evacuating refrigerant from storage devices, appliances, and refrigerant systems. An evacuation system is provided with a vacuum pump including a housing containing an electric motor positioned with its stator in heat conductive contact with the inner surfaces of the housing. The electric motor is used to drive a rotating-vane, rotary compressor that provides positive displacement suction on the device being evacuated of refrigerant. The vacuum pump further includes an external cooling system positioned about the housing to dissipate heat that builds up within the housing during periods of low refrigerant flow. The external cooling system includes tubular fins contained within a shell and held in abutting contact with an outer surface of the housing and a fan for forcing cooling air flow over and through the fins.

  • Patent number: 6289593
Abstract: Improved razors and razor blades and processes for producing razor blades or similar cutting tools with sharp and durable cutting edges, by hard-carbon coating of blades with amorphous diamond, preferably using a filtered cathodic arc plasma source. A coating of amorphous diamond having at least 40 percent sp3 carbon bonding, a hardness of at least 45 gigapascals and a modulus of at least 400 gigapascals is applied to the sharpened edge of a substrate. The substrate may be mechanically honed, and there is no interlayer between the substrate and the amorphous diamond coating. The coating imparts stiffness and rigidity to a thin blade while maintaining a high aspect ratio.

  • Patent number: 6283327
Abstract: A material feed system and method for conveying a metered quantity of lightweight, friable mesh fibers without minimal damage to the mesh fibers to concrete and like materials mixing tank. The material feed system including a hopper with a spiral fiber guide near the discharge and flexible blades for clearing fibers from the upper and lower surfaces of the spiral fiber guide. A drive assembly is included for rotating the hopper at a rotation rate adequate to move and agitate the mesh fibers to facilitate flow of the mesh fibers first outward against the side walls of the bin and then rapidly downward through the bin being guided by the spiral fiber guide.

  • Patent number: 6282104
Abstract: A control system is provided for positioning between a power source, such as a distributed generator, and a utility or utility grid to control the injection of dc current and even harmonics into the utility or utility grid. In one embodiment, the control system is particularly suited for grid-tied operation and includes a power converter for acting as an ac current source by converting power received from the power source to ac current for transmittal to the utility. The control system further includes a voltage transformer between the power converter and the utility connection to block dc current and isolate the power source from the utility. A feedback control loop is included in the control system to measure, with a pair of current transformers, dc current and even harmonics in the current flowing into (power converter side) and out (utility side) of the voltage transformer.
