  • Patent number: 4612700
Abstract: Apparatus for severing components for example, electrical posts, from a strip of such components and for inserting each severed component into a workpiece, for example, a circuit board, comprises a row of strip feed units, each for feeding a different strip of components towards strip severing and component insertion means. The row of units can be shifted lengthwise thereof to align a selected one of the units, at a time, with the severing and insertion means, in accordance with a component insertion program, the insertion means is adjustable, also according to the program to insert the components to selected depths.

  • Patent number: 4611846
Abstract: A gripper head for attachment to the Z axis shaft of a robot or a pick and place machine to pick up objects and position them on a workpiece, comprises a body from which projects a pair of gripping jaws which are slidable horizontally relative to the body by first and second pneumatic piston and cylinder units, respectively. A hold down and tamper member is vertically movable between the jaws by a third piston and cylinder unit so as to hold down an object to be picked up while the jaws are being closed about it and to tamp the object down against the workpiece. A brake is provided for stopping the piston of one of the first and second piston and cylinder units in a desired position. The hold down and tamper member may be arranged also to act as a vacuum pick up device.

  • Patent number: 4607554
Abstract: A cable severing station for severing a flat cable at a position adjacent to electrical connectors to which the cable has been terminated, comprises a cable gripping unit having cable grippers which can be moved between an open position to allow the cable with the connectors thereon to be fed therethrough and a closed cable gripping position; and a cutting second unit for gripping the cable and the connectors and for severing the cable at positions close to the connectors. The cable is first fed through the grippers of the cable gripping unit when these are in an open position, and the cable cutting unit is then moved into the cable gripping unit to carry out the cable severing operations.

  • Patent number: 4589200
Abstract: An applicator for applying an electrical connector to a cable, comprises a roller having a recess in which is an anvil. The roller can be moved between a first angular position to allow a connector to fall from a connector magazine into the recess and a second angular position in which the anvil is opposite to a crimping die which is actuable to cooperate with the anvil to apply a connector in the recess to the cable.

  • Patent number: 4586771
Abstract: Connector assembly comprises first and second connector housings and a camming slide for mating and unmating the housings. The first housing has flanges extending from the mating face thereof and has slots in the flanges which receive cam followers on the cam slide. The second housing has cam tracks in its sidewalls which also receive the cam followers. The camming slide is generally U-shaped and has a web which is spaced from the rear face of the second housing and arms which extend from the web across the sidewalls of the second housing and which overlap the flanges on the first housing. The cam followers project from the internal surfaces of the arms and extend through the slots and are dimensioned to be received in the camming slots on the second housing.

  • Patent number: 4586773
Abstract: One of housing parts (1and 2) has ramps (15), which are engaged by projections (18) on latch arms (16) on the other housing part (2) to secure the housing parts (1 and 2) in mating relationship and thereby providing a force which assists the mating of the housing parts (1 and 2). In order to allow the arms (16) to be released from the ramps (15) by displacing only one of the arms (16), are ganged through a torsion spring (12) so that by depressing one arm (16) towards the mated housing parts (1 and 2), or by pulling the other arm (16) away from the mated housing parts (1 and 2), both of the arms (16) can be released from engagement with their associated ramps (15) simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4584757
Abstract: In an assembly for connecting electrical connectors to flat multi-conductor cable, an arm of a robot is provided with a connector transfer nest into which a connector can be fed at a connector feed station, for transfer by the robot to a press through which the cable has been fed. The nest is inserted into the press by the robot so that the cable extends through the nest and the press is then operated to actuate means in the nest to force conductor receiving portions of terminals in the connector through the cable to receive the cable conductors. The robot is then operated to withdraw the nest from the press leaving the connector on the cable and the cable is fed forward to allow the robot to apply a further connector thereto and so on. Means may be provided for severing the cable with the connectors thereon to provide separate electrical harnesses.

  • Patent number: 4582378
Abstract: A male electrical connector for mating with a female electrical connector has a latch arm with a spur for engaging in an opening in the female electrical connector. For separating the connectors the male connector has an ejector bar pivoted thereto. When the bar is depressed, the central part thereof depresses the latch arm to disengage the spur from the opening and camming heads on the ends of the bar engage end walls of the connector to lift the connector therefrom. The ejector bar has a central cam surface, and a camming head at each end having a trunnion for releasably connecting the bar to the male connector.
