Patent number: 6706401Abstract: This invention is a rapid low-cost technique for manufacturing thick high-performance carbon and ceramic composites in the form of uniformly densified near-net shaped structures. This is accomplished by impregnating composite preforms with low-viscosity wetting monomers which undergo polymerization followed by pyrolysis reactions in the preform ultimately creating ceramic and/or carbon matrices. Since the monomers possess low-molecular-weight they have low viscosities. Thus, if they wet the fiber and partially-densified preform they can easily impregnate even the smallest pores. Once inside the preforms, polymerization of the monomers is then initiated, resulting in a liquid matrix-precursor of the high molecular weight needed to produce a superior matrix (upon pyrolysis) with high efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2001Date of Patent: March 16, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Phillip G. Patent number: 6676811Abstract: A method of depositing nanoparticles for flux pinning into a superconducting material is described. According to the method of the present invention, a target made of superconducting material and a substrate are placed in the deposition chamber of a pulsed laser deposition apparatus. A first, moderate vacuum level is established in the chamber and the target is irradiated with light from a pulsed, high energy laser. By virtue of the moderate vacuum level, the material ejected from the target is slowed sufficiently to agglomerate into nanoparticles having the same composition as the target material. These nanoparticles are deposited upon the substrate. A uniform layer of superconducting material is deposited on the substrate by evacuating the deposition chamber to a second, high vacuum level and performing the pulsed laser deposition process again. The nanoparticles thus deposited within the superconducting material act as a flux pinning mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Paul N. Patent number: 6653970Abstract: Bistatic radar compatible for investigating the employment of a high-altitude UAV working in tandem with a group of low-altitude UAVs. The bistatic radar is divided into a position-adaptive bistatic mode and a close-range monostatic mode. In position-adaptive (robotic) bistatic mode, each low-altitude UAV estimates a new parameter denoted as the differential path length to adaptively implement self-adjustments in position. This approach provides each UAV with the potential for looking down the “throat” of an obscuration channel. In the event that a particular low-altitude UAV detects an obscuration channel, the low-altitude UAV will transfer to a close-range monostatic mode in an effort to interrogate the obscuration channel for targets.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2002Date of Patent: November 25, 2003Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Atindra Mitra
