  • Patent number: 4903609
Abstract: A tamping pad includes cutout along the length of the leading edge thereof to support at least one wear-resistant insert rigidly positioned therein. The wear-resistant insert comprises a body having a first side and a second opposed side, first and second opposed major surfaces and first and second opposed shoulders. The first side of the insert body defines a tamping blade leading edge which is arcuate in shape between the opposed shoulders. The arcuate leading edge of the insert body has a radius which defines the length of the arcuate edge to be of a ratio of about 1.3 relative to the width of the carbide insert. Preferably, the plurality of inserts extends end to end along the length of the leading edge of the blade to define the interrupted leading edge of the tamping pad as formed by the curvilinear leading edge of each of the plurality of inserts.

  • Patent number: 4875365
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring cutting forces associated with a machine tool. A force transducer plate forms a part of a bolted joint within the machine tool structure and is positioned within a direct force path. Raised force shunting pads are formed on both sides of the plate thereby limiting the load transfer area of the plate. At least one three-axis load cell is mounted closely adjacent one force shunting pad and elevated relative to the pad such that an acceptable pre-load is maintained on the load cell. By strategically placing the load cell closely adjacent the force shunting pad and utilizing the force shunting pads to transfer the majority of loads through the plate, hysteresis is minimized, linearity optimized, and the load cell protected from overload.

  • Patent number: 4850762
Abstract: A sealing mechanism acts between a quick-change tool holder and a tool adapter receivable therein. The sealing mechanism is an elastomer seal in the form of a V-flange elastomer seal ring mounted on a metal member which has a coaxial cylindrical outer surface and an axially inwardly facing shoulder to establish the elastomer seal member in position. This seal member has a generally conical seal member first portion with an external peripheral surface engaging a planar surface on the quick-change tool holder. This prevents contaminants, such as fine chips, from entering the interior of the quick-change tool holder. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of the one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

  • Patent number: 4850765
Abstract: A self-locking tool and socket body combination includes a tool holder with a male section which may be received in a socket in the socket body. Tool grippers of a tool loading device grip onto an annular V-groove on the tool holder and also act on an actuator. The actuator is linked to a first and second wedge surface which are moved laterally inwardly against the urging of spring means. When the tool grippers are released, the spring means urge the first and second wedge surfaces laterally outwardly into engagement with first and second wedge follower surfaces in the socket body and this automatically locks the tool holder axially within the socket body without any other manual or automatic means required to lock the tool holder within the socket.

  • Patent number: 4850649
Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool for mounting in the bore of a block comprising an elongate symmetrical body having forward and rearward portions wherein the forward portion terminates in a front end at which there is a cutting tip and the rearward portion is of a generally constant diameter and terminates in a rear end. The rearward portion contains a channel adjacent the rear end. A resilient retainer surrounds substantially all of the rearward portion and extends rearwardly past the rear end. The retainer has an inward projection which is received within the channel so that the elongate body and retainer are retained together. The retainer has an unstressed diameter greater than the diameter of the bore so that when the cutting tool is inserted into the bore the retainer expands against the bore so as to be held therein whereby the body is free to rotate relative to the block.

  • Patent number: 4848198
Abstract: An hydraulic chip breaking tool holder is provided with a fluid coupler and seal assembly for transferring high pressure, chip breaking fluid from an outlet opening of the main body of the tool holder to an inlet opening of an attached nozzle cap. A coupler in the form of a dowel is interconnected between the openings. At least one of the openings includes a seal cavity having an outer wall. The dowel is inserted through the seal cavity. A deformable pressure sensitive seal is disposed within the seal cavity and extends around the dowel. The pressure of fluid passing through the tool holder causes the seal to radially expand and seal the area between the dowel and the outer wall of the seal cavity, thereby preventing fluid from escaping pst the seal.

  • Patent number: 4840360
Abstract: An expanding mandrel is disclosed for operation within a cylindrical sleeve, which may be rotated within the sleeve while engaging the workpiece. A three point contact is made within the inner diameter of the workpiece utilizing only a two piece device. A body member is provided having a working end which engages an inner diameter of a workpiece at a single point. A single wedge member which is generally elliptical in cross section slidably engages the body member. The wedge has a working end which engages the inner diameter of the workpiece at two points, the wedge being biased by a spring within the body member. In operation, the wedge and body member are forced against the inner diameter of the workpiece by the spring, and are released by the application of external pressure on an internal shaft to permit the application and removal of the mandrel from a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4821819
Abstract: Formation of a continuous double sandwich braze joint between a bit body of a conical bit and a carbide insert tip disposed in a cylindrical recess formed in a forward end of the bit body is facilitated by a cylindrical shim. In one form, the shim is a cylindrical sleeve having an annular sidewall with opposite forward and rearward open ends. The insert tip is received through the forward open end of the sleeve. Also, a multiplicity of perforations are defined in spaced apart relation through the sidewall and uniformly distributed thereabout. The multi-perforated sleeve is disposed within the bit body recess and between its interior and the exterior of a cylindrical base of the insert tip such that the multiplicity of perforations defined in the sleeve sidewall provide a multiplicity of spaces extending between the bit body and insert tip for receiving braze therethrough. In an alternative form, the shim is a cylindrical basket having a sidewall and endwall.

  • Patent number: 4809995
Abstract: A quick-change mechanism is provided between a male member and a female member which has a socket with an axis. A flange is provided on each member, and in the flange of the female member an eccentric circular cam is pivotably mounted on one side of the socket. The cam may be pivoted through an arc between a locked and an unlocked condition in a single plane. The unlocked condition moves the cam laterally outwardly beyond the cam follower surface in the male member. As the cam is rotated towards the locked condition, the cam locking surface moves in a single plane laterally inwardly and establishes an axially inward force on the cam follower surface. The quick-change mechanism is small and compact and contained entirely within the flange of the female member. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.
