  • Patent number: 7486653
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting broadcast information in a multi-carrier communication system. The Sync Channel of the multi-carrier system is transmitted a 1.25 MHz channel bandwidth (i.e., over a single carrier), and to specify the preferred channels for the Sync Channel transmission instead of the preferred channels for the entire multi-carrier system. The Sync Channel Message will carry additional information indicating the center frequency of a multi-carrier system within a reserved set of frequency bands and indicating the frequency of a single carrier system in the reserved set of frequency bands. Considering the A block of the PCS band again, the preferred channels for Sync Channel transmission can be selected as channels 75, 150 and 225. This selection ensures that one of the preferred channels will always be used by any multi-carrier system regardless of the location of its center channel.

  • Patent number: 7437537
Abstract: In an instruction execution pipeline, the misalignment of memory access instructions is predicted. Based on the prediction, an additional micro-operation is generated in the pipeline prior to the effective address generation of the memory access instruction. The additional micro-operation accesses the memory falling across a predetermined address boundary. Predicting the misalignment and generating a micro-operation early in the pipeline ensures that sufficient pipeline control resources are available to generate and track the additional micro-operation, avoiding a pipeline flush if the resources are not available at the time of effective address generation. The misalignment prediction may employ known conditional branch prediction techniques, such as a flag, a bimodal counter, a local predictor, a global predictor, and combined predictors. A misalignment predictor may be enabled or biased by a memory access instruction flag or misaligned instruction type.

  • Patent number: 7421016
Abstract: Techniques to test a wireless communication link. A traffic channel is tested via a test data service option (TDSO) that may be negotiated and connected similar to other services. Test parameters values may be proposed, accepted or rejected, and negotiated. Test data for a channel is generated based on a defined data pattern or a pseudo-random number generator. Sufficient test data may be generated based on the generator for a test interval, stored to a buffer, and thereafter retrieved from a particular section of the buffer to form data block(s) for each “active” frame. The traffic channel may be tested using discontinuous transmission. A two-state Markov chain determines whether or not to transmit test data for each frame. The average frame activity and average burst length are defined by selecting the probabilities for transitioning between the ON/OFF states of the Markov chain, which may be driven by a second generator.

  • Patent number: 7404042
Abstract: A fetch section of a processor comprises an instruction cache and a pipeline of several stages for obtaining instructions. Instructions may cross cache line boundaries. The pipeline stages process two addresses to recover a complete boundary crossing instruction. During such processing, if the second piece of the instruction is not in the cache, the fetch with regard to the first line is invalidated and recycled. On this first pass, processing of the address for the second part of the instruction is treated as a pre-fetch request to load instruction data to the cache from higher level memory, without passing any of that data to the later stages of the processor. When the first line address passes through the fetch stages again, the second line address follows in the normal order, and both pieces of the instruction are can be fetched from the cache and combined in the normal manner.

  • Patent number: 7386747
Abstract: Control logic monitors use of a particular functional element (e.g., a divider, or multiplier or the like) in a programmable processor, and the control logic powers the unit down when it has not been used for a specified time period. A counter (local or central) and time threshold determine when the period has elapsed without use of the element. The control logic also monitors how soon the functional unit is woken up again, to determine if power control is causing thrashing. Upon the determination of such thrashing, the unit automatically adjusts its threshold period, to minimize thrashing. In an example of the logic, when it determines that it is being too conservative, it lowers the threshold. Mode bits may allow the programmer to override the power-down logic to either keep the logic always powered-up, or always powered-down.

  • Patent number: 7376032
Abstract: A dummy SRAM cell for use in a dummy bit line circuit uses the same transistors as used in a standard SRAM cell, which includes first and second subsets of transistors configured as first and second bit line output circuits. The dummy SRAM cell includes the same first and second subsets of transistors, with the first transistors configured as a dummy bit line output circuit having substantially the same electrical characteristics as the first bit line output circuit of the standard SRAM cell. Further, the second transistors, which are not otherwise needed for the dummy SRAM cell function, are reconfigured as a voltage tie circuit for the dummy bit line output. Using the second transistors for this purpose obviates the need to add additional transistors to form a voltage tie circuit for configuring the dummy bit line output circuit as a load or driver for the dummy bit line.

  • Patent number: 7376815
Abstract: Techniques for ensuring a synchronized predecoding of an instruction string are disclosed. The instruction string contains instructions from a variable length instruction set and embedded data. One technique includes defining a granule to be equal to the smallest length instruction in the instruction set and defining the number of granules that compose the longest length instruction in the instruction set to be MAX. The technique further includes determining the end of an embedded data segment, when a program is compiled or assembled into the instruction string and inserting a padding of length, MAX?1, into the instruction string to the end of the embedded data. Upon predecoding of the padded instruction string, a predecoder maintains synchronization with the instructions in the padded instruction string even if embedded data is coincidentally encoded to resemble an existing instruction in the variable length instruction set.

  • Patent number: 7330941
Abstract: A processor includes a cache memory having at least one entry managed according to a copy-back algorithm. A global modified indicator (GMI) indicates whether any copy-back entry in the cache contains modified data. On a cache miss, if the GMI indicates that no copy-back entry in the cache contains modified data, data fetched from memory are written to the selected entry without first reading the entry. In a banked cache, two or more bank-GMIs may be associated with two or more banks. In an n-way set associative cache, n set-GMIs may be associated with the n sets. Suppressing the read to determine if the copy-back cache entry contains modified data improves processor performance and reduces power consumption.

  • Patent number: 7310367
Abstract: An integrated circuit that performs data demodulation on partially despread symbols includes a despreading unit, a channel compensation unit, and a symbol combiner. The despreading unit despreads input samples and provides despread symbols for a first code channel with a first spreading factor. The channel compensation unit multiplies the despread symbols with channel estimates and provides demodulated symbols. The symbol combiner combines groups of demodulated symbols to obtain recovered data symbols for a second code channel with a second spreading factor that is an integer multiple of the first spreading factor. The channel compensation and symbol combining are dependent on whether or not transmit diversity is used. For a TDM design, despread symbols for multiple first code channels are processed in a TDM manner, one channel at a time, to obtain recovered data symbols for multiple second code channels. The channel compensation unit and symbol combiner can be operated in a pipelined manner.
