  • Patent number: 7993208
Abstract: Play equipment that combines the movements of a teeter totter and a merry-go-round includes a support for suspending a riding assembly, a riding assembly upon which a rider is supported, such as upon which a rider sits or a rider hangs from, and a suspending means which suspends the riding assembly from the support for both rotational movement with respect to the support and up and down movement with respect to the support. The up and down movement may be achieved by pivotal movement or by swinging movement. The support of the invention may be adjustable to adjust the height of the riding assembly. When seats for the riders are provided, the seats may include restraining means, such as back and side rails to help keep the rider in the seat. The equipment can include a single beam providing a pair of oppositely extending arms as with a traditional teeter tooter, or can include additional beams or arms, such as four arms, to accommodate additional riders.

  • Patent number: 7983394
Abstract: A multiple wavelength x-ray source includes a multi-thickness target, having at least a first and a second thickness. The first thickness can substantially circumscribe the second thickness. An electron beam can be narrowed to impinge primarily upon second thickness or expanded to impinge primarily upon the first thickness while maintaining a constant direction of the beam. This invention allows the target thickness to be optimized for the desired output wavelength without the need to redirect or realign the x-rays towards the target.

  • Patent number: 7977076
Abstract: A process for production of biofuels from biomass can include depolymerizing a biomass to form a feed. The feed can be formed by autotrophically growing algal biomass and extracting the feed therefrom. The algal feed can be converted to an algal oil by introducing the algal feed to an oil-producing algae under growth conditions sufficient to encourage formation of algal oil within the oil-producing algae. The algal oil can be extracted from the oil-producing algae and can further be converted to biodiesel.

  • Patent number: 7975879
Abstract: A dispenser for relative rapid cooling or heating of the contents of a liquid storage container provides a receptacle for receiving the liquid storage container therein and positioning a thermal transfer portion of the liquid storage container in thermal conductive relationship with a thermal conduction pad associated with the receptacle. Thermal energy is effectively and efficiently transferred from the thermal conduction pad to the liquid in the liquid storage container. The thermal conduction pad is controlled to provide and maintain the desired temperature to the liquid. The liquid is dispensed directly from the container. Various types of containers can be used in the dispenser, with a special bag-in-box container having a inner container and outer box with thermal conduction windows in the box to provide good heat transfer between the thermal conduction pads and the inner container constituting an aspect of the invention. A special rigid container can also be used.

  • Patent number: 7975160
Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for precise absolute time event generation and capture. One embodiment of the present invention is a programmable hardware module for TTL pulse generation and capture in absolute time. The nominal accuracy of the programmable hardware module is 25 ns. The time reference is an on-board GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver. The hardware embodiment of the present invention can generate eight independently programmable outputs and capture the times on eight independently programmable inputs. An exemplary application for the present invention is triggering external light sources, and flash-lamp pumped lasers in particular, at specific times for calibration of cosmic-ray observatories. A software embodiment of the present invention is implemented in a Linux software device driver interface featuring an extensive set of user commands.

  • Patent number: 7974673
Abstract: A multi-element probe array suitable for sensing or stimulating is disclosed. In one embodiment, the multi-element probe array includes a plurality of microfibers extending longitudinally and oriented substantially parallel to form a bundle. Probe elements are defined by a first subset of the microfibers displaced in a forward direction along the longitudinal axis relative to spacer elements defined by a second subset of the microfibers. Interface elements and communication elements are disposed on the probe elements.

  • Patent number: 7966777
Abstract: A telescoping mast apparatus has a plurality of nesting cylinders. The telescoping mast apparatus has a plurality of telescoping cylinders and a plurality of straps. The plurality of cylinders is extendable from a base. Each strap extends from near a bottom of an outer cylinder, around an upper roller near a top of the outer cylinder, and is attached near a bottom of an inner cylinder. The plurality of straps and the plurality of telescoping cylinders intercouples in series with alternating straps and cylinders. The plurality of cylinders is extended by retracting a first strap from the outer cylinder, which raises an intermediate cylinder, which retracts the intermediate strap from the intermediate cylinder, which raises the second intermediate cylinder.

  • Patent number: 7970068
Abstract: A channel estimator for use in a DVB-T system is capable of high Doppler performance without incurring restrictive delay spread limitations, in a hardware efficient manner. A first channel impulse response is generated that has ambiguity due to under-sampling in the frequency domain. A filter is then used to filter scattered pilots to generate a mask that is capable of resolving the ambiguities. In at least one approach, a finite impulse response filter is used during the mask generation process to generate a snapshot of the channel frequency response in non-real time. In another approach, an infinite impulse response filter is used during the mask generation process to generate a channel frequency response in real time.

  • Patent number: 7967974
Abstract: A method of recovering hydrocarbons from hydrocarbonaceous materials can include forming a constructed permeability control infrastructure. This constructed infrastructure defines a substantially encapsulated volume having substantially permeable side walls and a substantially impermeable cap. A comminuted hydrocarbonaceous material can be introduced into the control infrastructure to form a permeable body of hydrocarbonaceous material. The permeable body can be heated sufficient to remove hydrocarbons therefrom without contamination or substantial leaching of materials outside of the impoundment. During heating the hydrocarbonaceous material is substantially stationary as the constructed infrastructure is a fixed structure. Removed hydrocarbons can be collected for further processing, use in the process, and/or use as recovered.
