  • Patent number: 4418529
Abstract: A gas turbine engine fuel control has a main hydromechanical fuel flow control and an electrically operable valve in series with the flow control for speed limitation purposes. The valve is controlled by a signal N.sub.L or N.sub.H derived from an engine speed transducer. A phase advance compensation circuit advances the phase of the transducer signal and its output is applied to an error amplifier which compares it with a datum (which may vary with altitude). The error signal is applied to a non-linear amplifier the amplification factor of which increases when a certain error threshold is exceeded. The combination of phase advance and non-linear amplification ensures rapid limitation of speed without introducing stability problems.

  • Patent number: 4419654
Abstract: A monitoring apparatus for a vehicle such as a tractor comprises a console including controls and a control circuit for calculating wheel slippage of at least one drive wheel of the vehicle and responsive to engine RPM of the vehicle and to the rotational speed of the drive wheel for calculating a predetermined relationship therebetween. The control circuit is also responsive to actuation of the controls for setting the calculated relationship equal to a predetermined reference value when there is substantially no load on the vehicle, and hence minimum slippage of the drive wheel, in each of a plurality of ranges of gear ratios of the vehicle, thereby calibrating the control circuit to calculate wheel slippage for each of these ranges of gear ratios. The console also mounts an observable indicator and the control circuit also calculates other variables such as vehicle speed and engine RPM and actuates the observable indicator when the calculated values deviate from preselected values.

  • Patent number: 4413917
Abstract: A temperature measuring system comprises a sensor which is connected to a supply rail through a first lead, and which may be selectively connected by a relay through a second lead or a third lead to the inverting input of an operational amplifier. The leads have different resistance values. The output of the amplifier is connected to its input through a resistor, and its non-inverting input is connected to the rail through a potential divider. The output of the amplifier is connected to a computer through a low pass filter and an A/D converter. In operation, the output voltage of the amplifier is first measured with the second lead connected to its inverting input and then measured again with the third lead connected. From these measurements the resistance of the sensor is calculated after calculating and hence eliminating the resistance of the leads. The sensed temperature can then be calculated from the resistance of the sensor.

  • Patent number: 4407618
Abstract: A fastener comprises a base formed of a flange and a plurality of leg pieces and a screw-receiving member adapted to be embraced between the leg pieces, whereby it is secured onto a given panel by a procedure which involves inserting the leg pieces into a fitting hole bored in advance in the panel, then inserting a fastening screw through a through hole formed in the flange into a screw hole formed within the screw-receiving member, imparting a helical motion of the fastening screw thereby drawing the screw-receiving member toward the flange, consequently causing the leg pieces to be spread outwardly within the fitting hole of the panel and brought into tight engagement with the fitting hole and, at the same time, enabling the fastening screw to be secured onto the panel through the medium of the base.

  • Patent number: 4407255
Abstract: An ignition system is provided for creating a continuous stream of high voltage pulses to each spark plug (8) over a predetermined period of time as controlled by the distributor (7). Below the transformer core (1) is positioned a switch (6) incorporating a plate (9) which is magnetically attracted to the transformer when a current flows through the windings. When the contacts of the contact breaker (5) open the supply from the battery (4) to the transformer core (1) is cut off so that the switch (6) closes under the bias of a spring due to the collapse of the magnetic field created in the core. Closure of the switch (6) restores the circuit from the battery (4) to the primary and secondary windings (2) (3) of the transformer and thus during the whole period that the contact breaker (5) is open the switch (6) will intermittently open and close, resulting in the application of a rapid series of high tension pulses to the respective spark plug (8 ).

  • Patent number: 4403391
Abstract: A machine tool comprises a work head in which tools are mounted in use and which is movable along a main beam in a Y machining direction. A tool selected from a tool storage matrix is held at an exchange position in readiness for exchange with a tool mounted on the work head. A carriage is movable along a subsidiary beam in a direction parallel to the Y machining direction and carries a pair of tool grippers. During a tool change, one of the grippers takes the tool from the exchange position and holds the latter while the carriage moves to the work head where it latches onto the latter by means of a latch device. The other gripper then removes the tool from the work head, whereupon said one gripper inserts the replacement tool in the work head. The carriage then unlatches from the work head and moves away therefrom, so that said other gripper can return the removed tool to the exchange position.
