  • Patent number: 4459098
Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling the distribution of secondary air (30) between at least two fuel burners (14,16) in a multiple fuel combustor (16). Total chemical energies of the individual fuel streams (44,60) are determined and compared (64,66) with the total combustor chemical energy input (62) for controlling biasing means (32,34). The determination of at least one individual fuel total chemical energy content (60) may optionally include a prompt neutron activation type analyzer (48) for on-line measurement of specific fuel chemical energy (59).

  • Patent number: 4458537
Abstract: A capacitive pressure transducer is disclosed in which a sensing diaphragm bearing an electrode is mounted to flex in response to applied fluid pressure relative to a reference member having an opposed electrode. A thin film or layer of dielectric material such as glass covers the reference member electrode and has formed therein a concavity matching the flexed curvature of the sensing diaphragm at its limit position. The dielectric layer has a high compressive strength and substantially enhances linearity by providing a substantially higher capacitance than the equivalent fluid-filled space. The transducer is retained within a transducer assembly under compressive preload, the assembly further including thermal strain relief means. Also disclosed are methods of making the transducer, which methods include thick film screen deposition techniques for forming concavities having preselected contours in the dielectric layer.

  • Patent number: 4452462
Abstract: A metallic spring member 30 cooperates with grooves 32, 34 disposed in pressure containing members 10, 12. The spring member 30 has an E-shaped cross section and is compressed both horizontally and vertically when the members 10, 12 are fully engaged. The seal is self-energizing under normal operating conditions and able to accommodate small, but significant relative motion between the pressure containing members 10, 12 during conditions of abnormally high and unevenly distributed temperature.

  • Patent number: 4446799
Abstract: At least one movable nozzle (14) is mounted in an opening (18) in the wall of a fluidized bed reactor (22). Solid feed materials (62) in granular form are conveyed to the nozzle (14) and injected into the reactor (22). By changing the direction of the solids injection flow stream, the mixing, residence, and reaction characteristics of the reactor (22) may be controlled. The nozzle (14) is elongated and arranged so as to tilt on a horizontal axis (58), and may inject fresh material or recycled material previously removed from the bed reaction zone (34).

  • Patent number: 4440423
Abstract: A two member control connector for joining multiple hydraulic control conduits (20) has one member (14) attached to the underwater equipment. The other member (10) is raisable to the water surface and also carries annular seal assemblies (24) around the mating ends of the conduits (20). The seal assemblies are each retained in a dove-tail groove (26). A vent passageway (42) is also provided in either the seal or the member (10) to prevent the occurance of differential pressure under the assembly, possibly resulting in seal loss.
