  • Patent number: 8061782
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention, a machine for degrading a natural and/or man-made formation has picks connected to a drum of the machine and at least one accelerometer mounted to the machine adapted to measure forces acting on the machine. Electronic equipment is in communication with the at least one accelerometer and the electronic equipment has a processor adapted to determine a change in the formation based off of input from the at least one accelerometer. The electronic equipment also is in communication with a mechanism adapted to control, at least in part, a location of the drum.

  • Patent number: 7533738
Abstract: A drill bit assembly has a bit body intermediate a shank and a working face. At least one wear resistant insert is press-fitted within a pocket formed in an outer surface of the bit. An urging element is disposed between the outer surface and a bore of the bit and the urging element is adapted to push the insert away from the bore.

  • Patent number: 7523794
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention, a wear resistant assembly has at least one hard insert disposed within a recess formed within a surface. A hard material substantially surrounds the hard insert and is also disposed within the surface. The hard material is separated from the insert by an intermediate material softer than both the insert and the hard material.

  • Patent number: 7350565
Abstract: A self-expandable cylinder insertable into the bore of a downhole tool includes a resilient material rolled into a substantially cylindrical shape. The outside circumference of the self-expandable cylinder is variable to allow the self-expandable cylinder to be inserted into a narrowed bore of the downhole tool near the box end or pin end. Once past the narrowed bore, the outside circumference of the self-expandable cylinder self-expands within the bore of the downhole tool. The outside circumference of the self-expandable cylinder may expand to contact the inside surface of the bore. In selected embodiments, a transmission line may be routed between the bore and the outside circumference of the resilient material. The self-expandable cylinder may be effective to protect the transmission line from materials traveling through the bore.

  • Patent number: 7258179
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention a drill bit assembly has a body portion intermediate a shank portion and a working portion. The working portion has a recess with a side wall which is substantially coaxial with the shank portion. At least one cutting element is attached to the side wall and an indenting member is disposed within the closed end. In another aspect of the invention a method includes providing a drill bit assembly with a recess formed in a working portion of the assembly. The working portion has a plurality of cutting elements and the recess has at least one cutting element. The method further has steps of cutting a formation with the plurality of cutting elements and also of penetrating a conical profile of the formation which is formed by the recess.
