  • Patent number: 5803683
Abstract: A very high speed adiabatic face milling machine whose configuration and operation provide a highly efficient machining process suitable for production manufacturing conditions. The milling machine preferably operates at speeds of approximately 15,000 sfm and at efficiencies of approximately 7 cubic inches per minute per horsepower. The preferred milling operation is conducted without the use of cooling liquids, instead employing a chip removal system which enables the milling machine to operate truly adiabatically such that no heat is transferred to the workpiece or the cutter. The efficiency of the chip removal system is such that chip recutting is nearly eliminated and tool life is improved. The milling machine also includes an improved cutter structure, fixturing, and transfer devices.

  • Patent number: 5787729
Abstract: A baffle or deflector having a cone-shaped baffle. Refrigerant fluid enters through the apex and flows through the deflector toward the inner wall of a vessel in an air-conditioning system. The laminar flow of refrigerant fluid against the inner wall separates the liquid and vapor components of the refrigerant fluid. Radial openings in the deflector allow the outlet tube to pass by the deflector. The amount of refrigerant fluid used in the system can be maximized while the size of the vessel can be minimized.

  • Patent number: 5779096
Abstract: A windshield wiper washer fluid system designed to visually notify the operator of the vehicle that the windshield wiper washer fluid is getting low and should be refilled. The system includes a tank having a passenger side hose and a driver's side hose each connected thereto such that the passenger side hose only sprays washer fluid on the passenger's side of the windshield and the driver's side hose only sprays washer fluid on the driver's side of the windshield. The tank and hoses are designed such that the passenger's side hose will run out of fluid before the driver's side hose and washer fluid will only spray on the driver's side indicating that the system needs to have washer fluid added while allowing the driver to continue to clean the driver's side of the windshield.

  • Patent number: 5771752
Abstract: An adjustment device for an automobile control pedal which is capable of pivotably adjusting the control pedal relative to a reaction member, such as the eyelet of a cylinder pushrod for a brake pedal or a flexible cable in case of an accelerator pedal. The adjustment device allows the control pedal to be positioned to suit the needs of a particular driver. The control pedal can be pivotably attached to a frame in any conventional manner, such as with a pivot pin. The adjustment device is mounted alongside the control pedal and to the pushrod eyelet without the need of additional support hardware other than a device for acting on the control pedal. The adjustment device includes a rotatable member for causing pivotable movement of the pedal arm relative to the reaction member. The adjustment device is maintained a predetermined distance from the pivot of the control pedal arm by a spacing device, such as a link.

  • Patent number: 5770091
Abstract: An untreated flow of waste water is normally introduced into a plain sedimentation unit during plain sedimentation periods to separate it into sand and a flow treated by plain sedimentation. During other periods, for example periods of heavy rain, a coagulating agent, ballast sand and a flocculating agent are introduced. The coagulated flow is passed into a maturation intermediate area and then, with substantially all the sand and colloids of particles attached to it, into the plain sedimentation unit. Here effluent is separated by plain sedimentation and evacuated and sludge made up of the sand and the adhering colloids and particles is extracted and evacuated via an extraction system and the sand outlet channel of the plain sedimentation unit. The sludge is collected, the ballast sand is separated from it to be recycled into the sand injection area and the sludge and excess sand are extracted.

  • Patent number: 5720313
Abstract: A system for controlling the rate of flow of a liquid in a liquid flow system, especially a system for controlling the rate of flow of treated water in a municipal water treatment and pumping system, the flow control system utilizing a venturi (10) having an inlet (12), a restricted throat (14) and a diffuser (16) through which the liquid flow is in series. The rate of flow of liquid through the venturi is adjusted by a flow rate control valve (18) in fluid communication with the diffuser of the venturi, and the flow control valve has a spool (22) that moves linearly to selectively permit a variable volume of liquid to flow through the valve into an outlet main (20). The movement of the spool is actuated by an electrically operated linear actuator (44) that operates in response to an electrical signal from a digital controller (40), which is indicative of a pressure differential between liquid pressure at the inlet of the venturi and liquid pressure at the throat.

  • Patent number: 5709792
Abstract: For identifying one of a plurality of known gases in a gaseous mixture ba on air a single catalytic transducer is placed in the gaseous medium. The catalytic transducer is heated to a lower threshold temperature at which the oxidizable gas is oxidized little or not at all and a first value of a parameter characteristic of the thermal state of the transducer is captured. The catalytic transducer is then heated to an upper threshold temperature at which the oxidizable gas oxidizes significantly in contact with the catalytic transducer and a second value of the parameter characteristic of the thermal state of the transducer is captured. Using a predetermined law, a response signal representative of the gaseous medium is produced from the difference between the second and first values of the parameter characteristic of the thermal state of the catalytic transducer. The catalytic transducer is allowed to cool below the lower threshold temperature and the above operations are repeated cyclically.
