  • Patent number: 5238976
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for treating reclaimed sand obtained from dismantled foundry molds and cores which contain a cured binder derived from an ester cured alkaline phenolic resin. Treatment of the reclaimed sand with a silane solution, particularly an aqueous solution, enhances the tensile strengths of foundry molds and cores produced therefrom beyond those obtained with untreated reclaimed sand. Methods for producing foundry cores and molds which incorporate such a treatment process are also provided by this invention as are raw batch formulations.

  • Patent number: 5235190
Abstract: A continuous air monitor is provided with the capabilities of monitoring certain transuranic and other airborne radioactive particulate with high accuracy and low false alarm rates in the presence of radon and thoron daughter products. A multiple filter sampling approach is used wherein air flow is directed on a alternating basis to each sampling filter in turn. Each filter collects particulate in the size range of interest. Beta and/or alpha activity can be continuously measured on each filter. The air flow can be directed through a chamber where radon and/or thoron gas portions of the air may decay into their daughters and the quantities thereof may be separately measured.

  • Patent number: 5226818
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for providing control of a fuel-operable burner assembly of a firefighter trainer in accordance with a sensed environmental parameter such as the temperature of an object such as a metal grating or prop that is positioned adjacent to the burner assembly. The control system and method are particularly advantageous to simulate fire reflash following substantial extinguishment of the fire, as operational parameters such as the rate of flame growth, maximum flame height, and reflash delay can be selected and varied from one scenario to the other to modify the training scenario in accordance with such factors as trainee proficiency and the type or class of fire. Burner control is preferably accomplished by an automated processing system in accordance with the foregoing environmental and operational parameters.

  • Patent number: 5207418
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for the accumulation, cutting, and stacking of continuously moving web material such as fabric tape that is to be printed and cut by appropriate processing apparatus into a plurality of discrete labels The method and apparatus provide for the accumulation of the continuously-supplied web between a base and an overlying resilient spring member while other processing steps such as web cutting are being performed on the web. The spring member engages the tape to temporarily suspend its forward advancement while allowing the tape to accumulate between the spring member and the base. The cut labels are stacked in a bottom-fed stacking assembly having a stacker chute that is angled both rearwardly with respect to the machine front and backwardly in the direction of label advancement to permit the removal of previously processed labels during operation of the processing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5206934
Abstract: A method and apparatus for conferencing among a plurality of computers is described. A local user receives inputs containing user actions and data for interpretation as to what the user action is with respect to the data and produces user action outputs. An interpreter/encoder interprets and encodes the user action outputs into packets of encoded commands and data related thereto. A communications device sends the encoded information to at least one remote user and the local user itself. An interpreter decoder at each computer interprets and decodes the encoded information specifying an operation to be performed on the data. The operation is then executed at the local user and the remote users. The system is operating system independent and multiple documents and applications may be worked on at the same time by different users.

  • Patent number: 5204569
Abstract: An anisotropic magnet for a rotary electric machine having at least two magnetic pole portions in a cylindrical yoke. An anisotropic magnet constituting the magnetic pole portions is arranged such that a central portion of each magnetic pole portion has lines of magnetic force oriented in a radial direction, and opposite end portions of each magnetic pole portion located closer to respective opposite ends of the magnetic pole portion has lines of magnetic force oriented in such a manner as to be gradually offset from the radial direction toward a mutually parallel direction. Accordingly, an effective magnetic flux density of a sinusoidal waveform is generated in the magnetic pole portions.

  • Patent number: 5182464
Abstract: A high speed transfer switch is provided for transferring a multiphase load among a number of multiphase A.C. power sources. If the initially selected source deviates from desired limits, the transfer switch transfers the load to an alternate source on a phase-by-phase basis. Antiparallel-connected SCRs are used to allow the load current in each phase to commutate to zero before the load is transferred to the alternate power source.

  • Patent number: 5181851
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for providing a simulation of a flashover condition that can occur during the course of suppression of a live fire. The flashover simulation is implemented by selectively supplying and igniting fuel to an auxiliary or flashover fuel burner assembly positioned adjacent the ceiling of the burn room of a firefighter trainer. Preferably, the flashover simulation is implementable only upon attainment of a threshold value of one or more pre-selected trainer operational parameters that are monitored throughout the course of a training scenario. Preferred trainer operational parameters for such monitoring include flame height at a main burner assembly and air temperature adjacent to or near a ceiling portion of the burn room.

  • Patent number: 5154041
Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for effecting sealing of a carton panel such as the top panel to a manufacturer's joint in such a fashion that carton erection from a pre-formed carton blank can proceed in an in-line manner without any changes in the direction of carton transport as it is erected, filled and sealed. Panel sealing is accomplished by folding the manufacturer's joint over a free end of the panel, applying an adhesive to the manufacturer's joint while it is in overlying relation with the panel, lifting the panel over the manufacturer's joint, and urging the panel into engagement with the manufacturer's joint so as to become bonded thereto. Top panel sealing in the foregoing manner proceeds without the necessity of using the carton contents as a mandrel against which the manufacturer's joint is otherwise ordinarily folded, thereby permitting the carton to be erected and sealed along its manufacturer's joint in the absence of product received within the carton.

  • Patent number: 4952129
Abstract: A plant to manufacture elongated concrete elements, particularly railway sleepers of prestressed reinforced concrete. In the plant according to the invention, the forms for the production of said elements are supported on carriages sliding along parallel side-by-side tracks, and the operating machines designed to perform in succession a series of operations on said forms are positioned into a limited working area, housed inside a shed, and are mounted above said tracks, substantially fixed in respect of the longitudinal axis of the tracks but movable transversely thereto. The curing area for the concrete elements is arranged externally to the working area. In the case of prestressed reinforced concrete elements, the tensioning device for the reinforcement strands are mounted directly on each of said slidable carriages supporting the forms.
