  • Patent number: 8099265
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for fast computation of fluid velocity fields in the presence of objects causing flow discontinuity are disclosed. Rigorous evaluation of perturbed velocity fields, each resulting from placing an object in a bounded space sustaining a reference velocity field, are determined for different orientations of the object with respect to a reference velocity field and different values of the magnitude of the velocity field. A velocity field is determined at selected sampling points within an enclosure surrounding the object. Pre-computed perturbed velocity fields determined for each object of a set of reference objects are stored in a computer memory. Fast real-time computation of velocity-field perturbations caused by presence of objects at arbitrary positions in a space sustaining velocity fields of different magnitudes and directions are realized using the stored pre-computed data.

  • Patent number: 7557689
Abstract: An alert system for a communications network has a plurality of client devices and a plurality of alert servers each adapted to provide alerts to a respective subset of the client devices to provide scalability. Users at the client devices subscribe to receive alerts by selecting a scope of distribution of alerts. The selection involves selecting a type of alert to receive, a level of severity of alerts to receive, and a geographic scope. In response to receiving a request to issue an alert, an alert server notifies the other alert servers of the alert. Each alert server determines which client devices of the respective subset of client devices are to receive the alert. Each alert server then sends an alert message to its client devices that are to receive the alert.

  • Patent number: 7551858
Abstract: Signals in an optical communications network, such as optical channels in an optical WDM network for example, are each identified by at least two low frequency dither tones with which the signal is modulated. The dither tones alternate with a predetermined periodicity to produce a cyclically repeated sequence of dither tones. A network parameter, such as a channel identifier for example, is obtained by the detection of the particular combination of dither tones in the sequence. To detect a number of network parameters a signal is modulated with a number of cyclically repeated sequences of dither tones each uniquely identifying a respective network parameter. In some implementations each dither tone in a cyclically repeated sequence of dither tones is repeated with substantially the same phase and coherent averaging is performed over a number of periods to detect dither tones on low power signals.

  • Patent number: 7548549
Abstract: Ethernet packets are transmitted in full duplex mode over a single coaxial cable, such as RG6 and RG59. Symmetrical full duplex operation is achieved by separating the upstream and downstream signals in the frequency domain whereby a 100BaseT signal is transmitted unmodified in one direction while the other is modulated upon a high frequency carrier to be transmitted in the other direction. In a second embodiment, the separation is in the time domain whereby the signals are sampled in blocks, each block compressed in time and transmitted at a higher rate, thus allowing for the interleaving of upstream and downstream blocks on the same coaxial cable. In a third embodiment, different rate upstream and downstream signals are separated in the frequency domain, but without modulation. The resulting asymmetrical 1000/100 Mb/s Ethernet over coax link is valuable in network architectures where asymmetry in the up and down traffic loads is expected.

  • Patent number: 7529480
Abstract: A method for monitoring lightpaths in an optical network comprising nodes interconnected by wavelength-multiplexed links is disclosed. Each lightpath is identified by a respective optical signature. A node stores identifiers of optical signatures of lightpaths designated to traverse the node and identifiers of adjacent nodes. Each node also maintains a record of all optical signatures it detects. A command-line interface associated with a selected node tracks a selected lightpath, designated to traverse the selected node, by propagating messages in an upstream direction, a downstream direction, or both, requesting other nodes to provide information pertinent to the selected lightpath. The selected node may also send messages to all its neighboring nodes requesting each to indicated detection, or otherwise, of the selected lightpath.

  • Patent number: 7525960
Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatus are provided which prevent frame mis-ordering in an explicitly routed network when switching from a first path to a second path. In a first embodiment, last frame and first frame markers are transmitted, and a receiver buffers all frames received between receipt of the last frame marker and the first frame marker. In a second embodiment, a last frame marker is sent to which an acknowledgement must be received before transmitting on the second path. In a third embodiment, only a first frame marker is sent. The receiver, upon receipt, signals a network card for the first path to stop forwarding frames, also buffers frames for some period. In a fourth embodiment, the merge point node forwards frames over different paths with unique markings so the outgoing card can distinguish them.

  • Patent number: 7389044
Abstract: An optical network including multiple nodes is subject to intermittent faults that may raise alarms in the system. The invention focuses on an optical network based on the Any rate architecture. A single fault such as a client failure at a node in such a network can give rise to a loss of client signal leading to multiple alarms detected at multiple points. To alleviate this problem this invention provides switching in a special Signature signal in place of the lost client signal. By detecting the Signature signal containing a specific code, the fault on the any rate-based architecture can be uniquely identified. In addition to fault identification, the Signature signal on the network makes it possible to maintain Clock and Data Recovery Locks at downstream nodes. The Signature signal serves also as a vehicle for carrying a special optical tag called Wavekey provided by the Wavelength Tracker technology developed by the Applicant.

  • Patent number: 7331016
Abstract: The invention describes system and method for generation a derivative document from a patent document, which provide value, enhanced representation of the document and facilitate comprehension of information contained in the patent document. A segment of the patent document is selected and transformed into a value added form by extracting at least two portions of information from the selected segment and converting them into different forms. Conveniently, the converted forms include respective elements where the required correspondence is established between the elements. Depending on customer needs and requirements to the system, a customized selection of the elements can be provided with optional display, storage and/or delivery of the selected data over a network. Beneficially, generation of the derivative is performed by using distributed processing of the document in a network, where two or more computers are involved.

  • Patent number: 7321727
Abstract: This invention provides a method for commissioning an optical network using internal Automatic Spontaneous Emission (ASE) light inherently present in the optical network as a light source (the ASE light source) for measuring losses inside and between nodes in the network. A modular segmented approach is adopted and the network is commissioned segment by segment. The method uses techniques for the correction of the Optical Signal to Noise Ratio induced error as well as the Spectral Filtering Error during the loss computation required for adjusting the gains of the amplifiers at each network node to an appropriate value. Since the method does not require an external laser source that needs to be moved manually from node to node, it greatly reduces the commissioning time. Since it uses only the existing components of the network nodes it also leads to a significant saving in cost.

  • Patent number: 7317731
Abstract: A system of hitless restart in a network, where at least one node in the network provides routing control distributed among ingress ports (ingress cards) and egress ports (egress cards), is disclosed. With distributed routing control, each ingress card has its own routing-control software and each egress card has its own routing-control software. When the routing-software at an ingress port or an egress port of a node is restarted, current connections traversing a restarting ingress card or a restarting egress card continue to function normally during a restart period without data loss. The disclosed system is tailored to a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network employing distributed-resource-reservation-protocol traffic engineering (RSVP-TE). The system relies on messaging between ingress card control planes, ingress card data planes, egress card control planes, and egress card data planes of a restarting node.

  • Patent number: 7289734
Abstract: A method and system for multi-level power management in an optical network is provided. They include three levels of power equalization. The first level of power management equalizes the powers of channels in a band of channels. The second level of power management equalizes the average powers of bands of channels on a fiber. The third level of control equalizes the powers of bands of channels on working and protection fibers for a path in the optical network. As a result, this multi-level power management in the network provides a dynamic, automatic method for the network to adjust to changing operating conditions and configurations and to maintain relatively stable network powers. Each level of power management may be implemented jointly or independently, and operates autonomously so that, for example, one modification comprises continuous first level control and only periodic second level control.
