Abstract: An assembly for drilling a hole in a roof to a greater depth than the height of the chamber therebelow includes a starter-driver bar having a first end adapted to be driven by a motor and a second end having a female socket therein, a rod extension including a male end shaped to be received in said female socket and a female socket at its other end of the same cross-sectional size and shape as the first named female socket, and a bit having a male shank of the same general cross-sectional shape as said male end. The male shank which is received in the socket has a pair of opposed longitudinal grooves in its outer surface extending from its lower end to a point beyond the socket. The starter-driver bar and rod extensions have axial holes therethrough so that a suction or water can be provided at the lower end of the assembly. When a suction is to be applied the sockets have at least one hole through its wall which is not covered by the drill shank, but which is covered by the male end of the rod extension.

Abstract: Strip is cleaned by passing it through a molten salt bath in a rectangular tank having U-shaped heating tubes arranged horizontally along each longitudinal side of the tank. Agitators positioned within L-shaped ducts at diagonally opposite corners of the tank cause movement of the bath past the heating tubes, thus heating the bath uniformly and keeping it in motion to prevent sludge from settling out. A second tank arranged along one side of the main tank has two spaced apart openings into the main tank and an agitator which causes movement of molten salt therethrough. The second tank also has a settling chamber therein through which molten salt passes slowly so as to cause sludge to settle out.

Abstract: Continuous testing apparatus for determining the magnetic characteristics of a strip of moving material including a flux inducing and pick-up device to induce a quantity of flux into the material and dual voltage output producing coils for producing different voltages from material having the same magnetic permeability, and circuit means coupled with the dual coils to produce an output voltage which is a characteristic of the ratio of the voltage produced by one of the coils and the difference between the voltages produced by both of the coils. The invention also includes the method of obtaining a profile of the coil of the material throughout the entire length thereof.
Abstract: A process for producing electromagnetic silicon steel having a cube-on-edge orientation and a permeability of at least 1870 (G/O.sub.e) at 10 oersteds. Involved therein are the steps of cold rolling a hot rolled band to final gage without an intermediate anneal between cold rolling passes; and preparing said band from a melt having 0.0006 to 0.0018% boron, and manganese and sulfur contents which produce a manganese to sulfur ratio of at least 1.83 in said band.
Abstract: Slag which is not electrically conductive when solid or at least at temperatures below 1500.degree. F. is melted by providing a graphite covering on top of the solid slag, contacting the covering material with at least two electrodes in spaced apart relationship, and supplying electric power to the electrodes to cause the graphite to sublime and set a plasma arc of carbon dioxide between the electrodes with resulting initial melting of the slag adjacent the electrodes. This melted slag then provides a conductive electrical path between the electrodes for continued melting of the slag.
Abstract: A steel strip such as stainless steel is passed in uncoiled form through a jet recuperator, an intermediate furnace section, and a main fired furnace section in which a fuel such as natural gas is burned. The exit end of the main furnace section has an opening only slightly greater than the cross-section of the strip. The strip is preheated in the jet recuperator by forcing waste gases from top and bottom waste gas chambers through holes in the bottom and top, respectively, of the waste gas chambers against both sides of the strip. The strip is further heated by the waste gases in the unfired intermediate section and brought to final temperature in the main fired section.

Abstract: This invention is concerned with a portable demagnetizer which includes a demagnetizing head supported within a hand held housing. Also contained within the housing is a variable control for applying voltages of decreasing step-less magnitude to the demagnetizing head; and means are also provided to apply a step-less alternating current power to the demagnetization head while voltages of decreasing magnitude are applied to the demagnetizing head. The housing is provided with a control means on the outside thereof so that the demagnetizer may be hand held and varied at the same time by a single individual user, particularly because of a minimum of parts and the use of step-less decreasing voltage magnitudes and the use of step-less alternating current power, which is applied to the demagnetizing head. Similar results can be achieved by slowly moving the work away from the alternating field.
