  • Patent number: 5120511
Abstract: Chlorine and hydrogen sulfide contamination in a local atmosphere is removed by drafting a ventilation flow stream of the contaminated atmosphere over an activated carbon adsorber bed. Saturation of the adsorber bed by adsorbed contaminant occurs as a progressive front advancing along the flow stream direction. One or more chlorine and hydrogen sulfide sensitive monitors signal passage of the saturation front at designated bed depth points. Each monitor is exposed to a small air sample flow from the bed at the respectively designated point. Each sample flow is directed serially over two reactive paper filters: the first being impregnated with 0-toluidine to remove Cl.sub.2 and the second being in impregnated with lead acetate to remove H.sub.2 S. Both filters respond to the respective compounds with a color change. Monitor construction and assembly places both filters side-by-side behind transparent chamber windows for manual observation of the color change without disassembly of the monitor unit.

  • Patent number: 5101774
Abstract: Paper pulp mill chemical recovery boiler steam piping is monitored for leaks by an acoustic leak detection system responsive to atmospherically carried sound transmissions. Energy level amplitudes of respective analog electrical signals generated sequence multiplicity of microphones are converted in a rapid time sequence to a first electric pulse signal sequence representative of corresponding digital values. Such digital values are temporarily stored in a data memory bank to be subsequently processed by a Fast-Fourier Transform spectral analysis into a second electrical pulse signal sequence representative of corresponding digital values in the amplitude vs. frequency domain. Such amplitude vs. frequency signal values respective to each microphone are further refined for comparison to historical threshold data for a probability determination of a leak status.

  • Patent number: 5059276
Abstract: Bundles of presized wood veneer strips are prepared for longitudinal edge adhesive by vertical alignment of the veneer strip face planes on a horizontal machine bed surface between open clamp jaws. Upon satisfactory alignment of the strip edges on the bed surface, the clamp jaws are closed on the bundle and translated from the bed surface to an adhesive transfer roll transverse plane. As the roll traverses the bundle length, adhesive is coated upon the veneer strip bottom edges. After completing the adhesive application pass, the clamp jaws are opened on manual command to release the veneer strip bundle for manual inversion. While the clamp jaws are open, the adhesive transfer roll is returned to the starting position. The clamp jaws are manually returned to the bed surface position and the opposite edge set of the inverted bundle is aligned against the bed surface and the process is repeated.

Upon satisfactory alignment of the strip edges on the bed surface, the clamp jaws are closed on the bundle and translated from the bed surface to a horizontal adhesive transfer plane. An adhesive transfer carriage traverses the bundle length to coat the veneer strip bottom edges by a rotatively driven wheel having a lower chordal segment immersed within an adhesive reservoir. After completing the adhesive application pass, the clamp jaws are opened on manual command to release the veneer strip bundle to manual inversion. While the clamp jaws are open, the adhesive transfer carriage is returned to the starting position with a non-rotating adhesive application wheel.

  • Patent number: 5009939
Abstract: The vessel portion of a gas-tight container suitable for packaging fresh foods is produced as a composite of paperboard and polymer film. A pair of folded paperboard blanks, pre-cut and pre-formed, are inserted into the opposite halves of split mold elements to a blow molding machine. Vacuum orifices in each mold half unit temporarily secure the position of a respective paperboard blank. The paperboard lined mold halves are closed upon a hot, extruded parison of malleable polymer leaving an end portion of the parison tube projecting from the closed mold unit. A fluid conducting needle penetrates this projected end portion to inflate the parison with an appropriate blowing gas. Such inflation expands the malleable polymer, seamlessly and creaselessly, into the internal corners and crevices of the folded paperboard blanks. Following chilling, the mold unit is opened and the pair of paperboard flanks are ejected as a singular unit, joined by a molded flange portion of the continuous polymer film.

  • Patent number: 5000227
Abstract: Flocs of papermaking fiber are dispersed by a multiplicity of white-water jets directed into a papermachine headbox prior to the slice opening. Jet direction is oriented counter-flow to the papermaking stock slice flow to create maximum turbulence, fluid shear and energy dissipation. Such jets issue from nozzle orifices in the slice profiling bar and are supplied with fluid through a two-stage manifold system. To preserve vertical plane pliability of the conduit-connected profiling bar, section area of the profiling bar between nozzles is minimized. Self sealing, push fit, fluid conduit connections with the jet nozzle orifices are made with flexible conduits between a sectional bar type of intermediate header and the profiling bar.

  • Patent number: 4998439
Abstract: Acoustic leak detection systems for boilers use wave guide tubes to conduct sound waves through the boiler wall for an environmentally safe location of microphones or transducers. To protect such wave guides from soot plugging, the boiler wall penetrating end of a wave guide is reciprocationally mounted within a soot shield. Linear motors mounted between the wave guide and soot shield base stroke the wave guide axially within the shield to dislodge accumulated soot upon command signal. Compressed air released from within the wave guide, also upon command signal, ejects loose soot particles from interior wave guide surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4976797
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for providing a jet stream applied hot melt adhesive bead of consistent, uniform section to the interior surface of a paperboard cannister for the purpose of securing and sealing a metal or plastic and closure. Fluidized hot melt adhesive is delivered by a gear pump into a circulation loop which includes a jet nozzle supply spur. Electric solenoid valves control adhesive flow direction into the spur or circulation loop, alternatively. A variable flow restriction in the circulation loop downstream of the jet nozzle supply spur is adjusted to maintain substantially constant fluid pressure at the spur junction in either delivery mode.

  • Patent number: 4968387
Abstract: The lateral edges of a papermachine forming fabric pond are contained by a deckle board having a bottom edge positioned above the forming fabric upper surface elements but below the fabric supported stock pond surface. Lateral edges of the forming fabric run under the deckle board and upon an edge support beam within an elongated fluid channel between the outside surfaces of the deckle board structure and the inside surfaces of the edge support beam. Fluid flow within the elongated fluid channel, preferably independent of the papermachine headbox slice opening, supplies the elongated fluid channel volume for a fluid barrier to pond stock loss under the deckle board bottom edge.

  • Patent number: 4945772
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for directly measuring the radially applied, compressive nip load between two press rolls. Matched, low angle ramp plates are connected tensilely by a load strip which supports a strain gauge. The assembly, having less than one inch of nip section thickness, is placed in the subject roll nip and loaded normally. Due to the ramp angle base, the two plates are displaced in opposite directions normal to the radial load. The connective load strip opposes the opposite displacement thereby stressing the strain gauge.

  • Patent number: 4919044
Abstract: A wet laid watermark of uncoated paper is simulated by the use of a resin or resin-plasticizer mixture dissolved in a slow evaporating, high boiling solvent. A sufficient quantity of the low viscosity solution is printed onto an uncoated paper sheet of stationery grade by a standard flexographic press to penetrate the paper fiber and deposit a non-tacky solid having a refractive index which closely approximates that of cellulose. The resulting image of the print is visible to both faces of the paper sheet.

  • Patent number: 4877426
Abstract: The draft forcing fan system in a vapor adsorber is used to extract spent powdered or granular adsorbent from the contacting column by blocking the normal air route intake and discharge ducts. Auxiliary fittings mounted on the intake and discharge ducting facilitate temporary duct connections with a conveniently sized vacuum receiving cannister. In this mode, the fan which forces draft through the adsorption unit operates as a vacuum sweeper. A manually manipulated sweeper wand connected to the vacuum cannister is used to draft the spent adsorbent charge from the contacting chamber into the cannister for removal, regeneration or disposal.
