    Abstract: A method is provided for producing medium carbon steel sheet and strip with enhanced uniform elongation for deep drawing applications. In one embodiment, a steel slab containing carbon 0.30/0.70%, manganese 0.75/2.0%, silicon up to 1.0% max., total aluminum 0.020/0.10%, the balance iron and incidental impurities is hot rolled to strip at a finishing temperature within the range of 839° C. (1542° F.) to 773° C. (1424° F.) and spheroidize annealed at a temperature below the A1 temperature. In a second embodiment, a steel slab containing 0.40 minimum/0.70% maximum carbon, 0.50/1.50% manganese, up to 1.0% silicon, 0.020/0.10% total aluminum, the balance iron and incidental impurities is hot rolled, cold rolled and spheroidize annealed, with various combinations of manganese and silicon within the above ranges providing lower yield strength at levels of 60 ksi, 70 ksi, and 80 ksi with minimum 14% uniform elongation.

    Abstract: A method is provided for enhancing the adhesion of organic polymer coatings to electrolytically passivated (CDC) tin-plated steel strip. The method includes applying a solution comprising 0.1 to 7 percent of an adhesion promoter to the electrolytically tin-plated strip during the processing of the strip on an electrolytic tin-plating line. The adhesion promoter may be at least one selected from the group consisting of: where n is within a range of from 4 to 99; (b) C16H33+N(CH3) 3 M where M is member of the halogen group; and (c) Rn—Si—(X)4−n where R is a non-hydrolyzable organic radical selected from the group consisting of glycol, epoxy, amine, diamine or mercapto groups, and mixtures thereof, containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms; the number n is an integer from 1 to 3; and X is a hydrolyzable group selected from the group consisting of Cl—, OCH3, OCH2CH5, OOCCH3, OCH2OCH3, amine, diamine, triamine, acyloxy and alkoxysilanes, and mixtures thereof.

    Abstract: A high performance weathering steel having a minimum yield strength of 70-75 ksi and a yield/tensile ratio less than about 0.85 is produced from a steel composition consisting essentially, in weight percent, of about: carbon 0.08-0.12%; manganese 0.80-1.35%; silicon 0.30-0.65%; molybdenum 0.08-0.35%; vanadium 0.06-0.14%; copper 0.20-0.40%; nickel 0.50% max.; chromium 0.30-0.70%; phosphorous 0.010-0.020%; columbium up to about 0.04%, titanium up to 0.02%, sulfur up to 0.01%, iron, balance except for incidental impurities; heating the steel to a hot rolling temperature, rolling the steel to a thickness about 2 to 3 times the final desired thickness, air-cooling the steel to a temperature of about 1800-1850.degree. F. (RCR) or about 1600-1650.degree. F. (CCR), recrystallize control rolling or conventionally control rolling the steel with finish rolling at a temperature of about 1700-1750.degree. F. (RCR) or about 1400-1500.degree. F. (CCR), then water-cooling the steel to about 900-1200.degree. F.

    Abstract: A system is provided for measuring the concentration of an element in molten metal such as silicon, chromium, manganese or aluminum. The system includes a probe with a sensor having a solid electrolyte, a reference electrode in contact with a first surface of the electrolyte and an auxiliary electrode at a second surface thereof. The auxiliary electrode includes an oxide of the element to be measured and a metal-silicate selected from the group consisting of alkali metal-silicates, alkaline earth metal-silicates and mixtures thereof. The metal-silicate has a working point at about the temperature of the molten metal so as to form a viscous semi-molten mass adjacent the second surface of the electrolyte. The metal-silicate is capable of diffusing oxygen in the semi-molten state. Preferably the metal-silicate is in the form of a fibrous material so that it can be easily applied to the surface of the electrolyte.

    Abstract: A method is provided for determining the thickness of a protective layer of solidified metal skull formed on the refractory hearth of a blast furnace. The refractory hearth has temperature probes embedded in the floor and walls thereof. The method includes periodically measuring temperatures indicated by the probes and determining the campaign maximum and current average temperature readings to locate two solidification isotherms representing the wear line of the refractory and the inner surface of the protective metal layer. The thickness of the protective layer is determined from the distance between the solidification isotherms representing the refractory wear line and the inner surface of the metal skull.

    Abstract: An elastomeric sleeve adapted to be mounted on a reel for winding strip into coil form has metal inserts adjacent a gripper slot opening for preventing flat spots in the coil. The sleeve is designed to permit sufficient expansion when the reel is expanded so that the gripper opening is not pulled apart and a widened gap is not formed therebetween. Preferably, slits are provided on the inner periphery of the sleeve for this purpose. Alternatively, a collar can be mounted on the outboard end of the segment bridging the gripper opening for enhanced structural rigidity to prevent the sleeve from pulling apart the gripper opening upon expansion of the reel.

    Abstract: A pouring pad is provided for use in a tundish during sequence continuous casting. The pouring pad has a plurality of concentric primary ridge portions adjacent to the location of impact of a pouring stream from a ladle with the pad. The primary ridge portions are of a height within a range for creating pockets of recirculation so as to dissipate turbulence without deflection of molten metal from its radially outward flow along the pad.     Abstract: Security apparatus is provided for preventing theft or portable electrical and other equipment having connections for radio frequency cable or other types of cable thereon. The apparatus includes a substantially uncuttable flexible tubular member for receiving a cable therein. First and second elongated housing sleeves are mounted on opposed ends of the flexible tubular member for connection to the equipment and a separate base unit or a fixture. Each housing sleeve has a pair of parallel passages, a first of which receives the flexible tubular member therein and a second of which receives specially actuable rotatably operable locking means. According to this invention, a planar lip surrounding the first passage in each housing sleeve is retained in tightly abutted engagement with the equipment or the base unit or fixture as applicable so that no space is available for prying or tampering with the cable connections which are completely enclosed in the housing sleeves.

    Abstract: A feed system is provided for conveying molten metal to a thin section caster having mold surfaces moving exclusively in the direction of casting. The feed system has a passage of circular cross section adjacent to one end thereof for receiving molten metal and a rectangular cross section at the delivery end thereof adjacent to the caster. The feed system is designed for supplying molten metal to the caster at low pressure for "closed-pool" type caster operation. The point of highest elevation in the metal flow passage of the feed system is on the upper surface of a transition portion where the cross section changes from circular to rectangular adjacent to the nozzle. The level or height of the high point above the centerline of the nozzle exit is selected so as to be less than the pressure of the metal measured in inches at the nozzle exit. This feature enables the maintenance of positive pressure in the metal within the feed system so that ingress of air into the metal is prevented.

    Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for brushing the edges of electroplated metal strip to remove excess plating metal therefrom. In a first embodiment for brushing the narrow face edges of the strip, a cup brush is mounted on a carriage having a motor thereon for rotatably driving the brush. The carriage is slidably movable in a transverse direction of the strip. A device urges the carriage inwardly toward the strip so that the brush is maintained in constant contact with uniform pressure against the strip edge. In a second embodiment for brushing the broad surfaces of the strip adjacent to the strip edge, a disc brush is mounted on a carriage having a motor thereon for rotatably driving the brush. Again, the carriage is slidably movable in a transverse direction of the strip. A device urges the carriage inwardly toward the strip so that the brush is maintained in constant contact with a uniform portion of the width of the strip near the edge thereof.

    Abstract: A compound elastomeric sleeve is provided for installation onto a segmented reel for preventing creases in metal strip wound into coil form thereon. A relatively thin, easily compressible outer sleeve is bonded to a thicker, more rigid inner sleeve. The dual hardness compound sleeve prevents creases yet retains its shape sufficiently for easy removal of a coil wound thereon from the reel. The invention includes a method for preventing creases from forming in metal strip which is to be wound into coil form on a segmented reel on which the compound sleeve is mounted.
