  • Patent number: 4114128
Abstract: An indicating composite sectionalized fuse is provided having a high-current interrupting section, and a mechanically-connected detachable low-current interrupting section in series therewith, with the low-current interrupting section including a pull-away indicating fuse-link cable, which indicates externally a blown condition of the fuse. The low-current interrupting section is replaceable, following a low-current interruption, which has no effect upon the high-current interrupting section, the latter remaining intact and may be further used. During high-current interruption, both sections are fused, and collectively contribute together to a quick interruption of the connected electrical circuit, again there being an external indicated condition of the blown condition of the fuse by an ejection of the fuse-link cable.

  • Patent number: 4114003
Abstract: A quick-acting movable-column tripping device is provided as an optional feature of either circuit-interrupters, supported by upstanding insulating column structures, or, alternatively, in connection with circuit-interrupters having a serially-related disconnecting switchblade, providing a visible open-circuit gap, so that a minimum of time is utilized in a tripping operation of the circuit-interrupter. Otherwise, there would be a considerably-delayed action caused by the normal, or inherent lost-motion provided in the loose linkages, which normally are used to effect operative movement of the movable relatively massive supporting column structure. The quick-acting, accelerating tripping device of the present invention provides relative fast motion between the upstanding rotatable supporting column structure and a base-spindle device, the latter of which is operatively mechanically linked to the motor-operated mechanism, for example, of the switch structure, which may be relatively slow in operation.

  • Patent number: 4110580
Abstract: An improved gas-type circuit-interrupter is provided utilizing a mixture of helium and sulfur-hexafluoride (SF.sub.6) gases, with the percentage concentration of sulfur-hexafluoride (SF.sub.6) gas being 10%, or less, by volume. The improved gas-type circuit-interrupter of the present invention may be utilized to advantage as a "puffer-type" circuit-interrupter, in which relative movement between a piston and operating cylinder takes place for forcing the compressed gas to flow through a suitably-located orifice, or nozzle member, and into intimate engagement with the established arc disposed therein to effect its extinction.Another form of the gas-type circuit-interrupter of the present invention may include a pressurized gas-reservoir chamber containing the aforesaid admixture of the helium and sulfur-hexafluoride gases in the proper concentration, that is 10%, or less, by volume, of sulfur-hexafluoride (SF.sub.6) gas with the remaining being made up substantially entirely of helium.

  • Patent number: 4103130
Abstract: A resistor assembly, together with a serially-connected resistor break, is connected in parallel, or shunting relationship, to an interrupting assembly, and arranged so that the resistor contacts remain closed while the main power-interrupting contacts open, and thereby divert the series line current through the resistor assemblage. This reduces the magnitude of the power-transmission line-current being interrupted, and lowers the rate of voltage rise across the main contacts so that arc reignition does not occur.During the closing operation of the circuit-breaker, the mechanical operating arrangement is such that the resistor contacts close prior to the closing of the main power interrupting contacts, so that any voltage surges occurring during the electrical charging of the transmission line are adequately controlled.

  • Patent number: 4090052
Abstract: A tank-type oil circuit-breaker has a pair of arc-extinguishing grid-structures disposed interiorly within the oil tank, each of said arc-extinguishing grid-structures having a pair of outwardly-directed horizontally-laterally-spaced venting ports, with the angular direction, or divergence between the two horizontally-spaced venting ports of somewhat critical angular magnitude. The construction is such that the two spaced venting ports on each arc-extinguishing grid structure collectively produce a resultant inwardly-directed jet force, which substantially counterbalances the outwardly-directed magnetic and mechanical forces resulting from the U-shaped line-current flow passing through the circuit-interrupter.The angular separation, or angular divergence provided between the two horizontally-laterally-spaced venting ports of each arc-extinguishing grid-structure falls within the range of angular magnitude of 80.degree. to 160.degree.. A desirable divergence range is between 100.degree. and 140.degree.

  • Patent number: 4081642
Abstract: An improved switch construction is provided having an overcenter-toggle mechanism for effecting the actuation of the one or more movable contacts of the switch. A pivotally-mounted operating lever carries one end of a toggle-tension spring, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the knee-joint pivot of a pair of pivotally-connected toggle links. The line of action of the force of the toggle-tension spring is such as to effect a straightening, or a collapsing of the pivotally-connected toggle-links, to thereby effect, respectively, a closure of the switch contacts, or an opening operation thereof.Preferably, a releasable rotatable support, or trigger is provided for the pivotal connection of one of the toggle links, so that a remote tripping operation is possible by an unlatching of the releasable support, which normally provides a stationary pivot for the toggle linkage of the mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4074220
Abstract: A fusible device is provided, of the generally-enclosed type, having an improved granular filler material surrounding, or encompassing the one or more fuse links. Preferably, the granular filler material comprises sand and alumina trihydrate (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.3H.sub.2 O). Another filler material, which gives roughly half the improvement of the aluminum trihydrate, is aluminum monohydrate (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.H.sub.2 O) in varying proportions.Of less satisfactory performance, as admixed with the sand, was hydrous alumina silicate (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.SiO.sub.2.XH.sub.2 O) (unfired lava), and of still less satisfactory performance, is a slight amount of free water physically admixed with sand, although its physical location within the sand is questionable, and such a fuse is of low interrupting reliability.

  • Patent number: 4053700
Abstract: A coupling flex-plate member comprising a circular metallic member having a centrally-disposed annular groove provided therein, providing a generally H-shaped cross-section, is fixedly secured to the confronting ends of adjacent inner high-voltage tubular conductors of a gas-insulated transmission line to permit a limited, but sufficient flexibility, of the inner conductor sections, or conductor buses. A low-strength high-conductivity material is used for the coupling flex-plate member, and permits an axial bending in a spring-like fashion until material yielding occurs. Inaccuracies during fabrication and assembly of the component parts are accommodated by the use of such a coupling flex-plate member without damaging adjacent components, especially spacing insulators, which are, of course, brittle and subject to fracture.
