Abstract: Two elongated parallel rails have facing surfaces each with a longitudinally extending central groove opening toward the groove of the other rail. A rigid web sheet has its opposite longitudinal margins fitted in the grooves so as to form, in combination with the rails, a composite I-beam construction. Block units of a thickness approximately the same as the thickness of each rail are secured between the rails at opposite ends of the web sheet. Blocks of insulating foam fill the cavities at opposite sides of the web sheet.

Abstract: A continuous frame of resilient foam material is strapped to a patient with a central aperture of the frame surrounding the puncture area of an intravenous (IV) needle inserted into the patient. A separate dome with ventilation apertures is attachable over the central aperture of the frame to shield the needle. The IV tube is anchored to the frame at a plurality of different locations such that tension applied to the tube is not transmitted to the needle to dislodge it.

Abstract: A cap has a sizing band adjustable in effective length by the use of hook and pile fasteners which sizing band can also retain a liner in the cap. A hook and pile fastener can be used alternatively to hold earflaps in upward-folded position or, when the earflaps are extending downward, the fastener can be used to attach the ends of a chin strap to the earflaps. A drawstring can be drawn to gather a neck flap and earflaps into snug engagement with the wearer's neck.

Abstract: An aqueous liquid containing unsaturated vegetable, marine or land animal oil or liquid fat, preferably drying or semidrying oil, is used as a scrubbing liquid to remove pollutant from an air stream. Specifically, styrene constituting an air pollutant is sorbed from the air and polymerized to polystyrene by ultraviolet light radiation to facilitate its separation from the scrubbing liquid.

Abstract: Lubricating oil supplied to the annular antifriction bearing mounting a rotary ring log barker ring on ring-mounting means, and lubricating oil supplied to air seals for a rotary ring log barker annular air plenum chamber is returned to an annular oil-collecting chamber in the inner periphery of the rotary ring. From such oil-collecting chamber oil is scavenged by a stationary scoop tube in the upper portion of the rotary ring-mounting structure and drained by gravity to a reservoir from which it may be pumped for recirculation through the components of the barker requiring lubrication.

Abstract: A booster propeller is located at the inlet of a flared funnel leading toward arcuate inlet apertures in an end plate of a centrifugal pump casing. Such propeller has radially projecting blades of generally right triangular cross section with bases formed of the broad trailing sides and broad bottom sides remote from the impeller; the hypotenuse side of each blade being a broad upper surface inclined relative to a plane perpendicular to the axis for propelling slurry toward the inlet apertures. The end plate is recessed into the impeller-receiving bowl of the pump casing such that the inner face of the end plate is flush with the adjoining inner face of the peripheral pump outlet conduit integral with the pump casing. The impeller has a circular shroud plate perpendicular to the axis with vanes or blades projecting toward the end plate and having cupped leading surfaces forming a sharpened edge.

Abstract: A pallet is constructed of two parallel lower beams on edge and four parallel upper beams on edge crossing the lower beams and connected to the lower beams by notched joints which provide clearance for the fork of a forklift beneath the upper beams at two sides of the pallet, and above the upper edges of the lower beams and below the upper edges of the upper beams at the other two sides of the pallet.

Abstract: The stringers of two sets of stringers crossing orthogonally to form a skeleton stringer pallet have edge forkway notches, ends of which notches are formed by crossing stringers so that the upright faces of such crossing stringers serve as a guide for the prong of a forklift inserted into the forkway notches.

Abstract: Bags are fed individually along a linear path from an upright bag pack by front vacuum cups and after the leading bag has been separated from the pack, rear suction cups are engaged with the back of the leading bag. The front and rear suction cups are moved away from each other to enable a bag gripper to be inserted in its upper end after which the front suction cups are swung out of the bag path, the gripper is moved to move the leading bag past the front suction cups, the front suction cups are then swung back into the bag path, the rear suction cups are swung out of the bag path and the front suction cups are moved toward the bag pack to extract the next bag from the bag pack.

Abstract: The face seal of a centrifugal pump has a stationary seal component mounted on the pump casing and a rotary seal component rotatable with the drive shaft extending into the casing and connected to the inner rotary pumping member or impeller. The rotary seal component is biased against the stationary seal component by a resilient welded metal bellows assembly having its end portion opposite the rotary seal component clamped to the drive shaft. To protect the welded metal bellows assembly against abrasive life-shortening contact with particulates in the liquid being pumped, a rigid shroud is provided including a generally cylindrical cavity having an inner wall portion extending close alongside the bellows for at least substantially the full axial extent of the bellows.

Abstract: Sheet material building components or units in the shape of different regular polygons of equal edge length have strips of hook-and-pile fastening materials permanently secured so as to extend along their side edges. Hook type fastening material is disposed toward one end portion of each side edge and pile type fastening material is disposed toward the other end portion of each side edge. The strips of hook type and pile type fastening materials alternate around the circumference of each unit. Different units can be connected substantially edge-to-edge by simply placing the desired edges in contact to form a wide variety of two-dimensional or three-dimensional arrays or shapes.

Abstract: Apparatus for making a plastic film bag having bag mouth lips projecting beyond a heat-seal band closing the bag mouth applies a stiffening patch bonded to the interior or exterior of a bag mouth lip between the heat-seal band and the bag mouth end for reclosing the bag mouth after the heat-seal band has been opened. For reclosing the bag mouth, the process applies stiffening patches to a web of sheet material for making bags at the time that the bags are formed and filled by clipping from a strip of patch-making material patch pieces having pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side. Apparatus performing the process transfers such patch pieces from a rotary shear onto the bag-making material by an orbiting transfer member having a suction pickup to pick up a patch piece and blowing means for subsequently detaching the patch piece from the transfer member and depositing it onto the web of bag-making material.

Abstract: Two separate sling lines (13, 14) have inner end portions secured to a drum (6 or 6') mounted in a block (2 or 2') and are wound in opposite senses around the drum. The block is adapted to be connected to a hoist and the free end portions (15) of the sling lines are adapted to be connected to a load at spaced locations. During or after lifting the load by use of the hoist, the drum can be rotated to haul in one sling line while automatically paying out the other and thereby tilt the load. Mechanism (10, 12 or 8', 30, 35) is provided for locking and unlocking the drum relative to the block.

Abstract: Two centrifugal pump and paddle type boat propulsion devices are mounted in astern outboard positions on two swingable vanes, respectively, projecting aft of a boat hull, spaced athwartships of the hull and swingable from positions inclined rearwardly and downwardly from the hull transom into upwardly and rearwardly inclined positions in which the rotors of the propulsion devices and rudders behind them are retracted above the level of the boat bottom.

Abstract: A scaffold plank hanger is suspended from a rung of a ladder by hooks engaging such rung which are spaced apart less than the width of the ladder. Such hooks carry a crossbar of a length greater than the width of the ladder. A scaffold plank has hooks projecting from one end which are hooked over opposite end portions of the hanger crossbar between its ends and the adjacent ladder rails, respectively.

Abstract: A tubular battery-receiving casing has a resilient member at one end urging a first conductor into electrical contact with one terminal of a battery assembly. Such first conductor includes a portion extending lengthwise along a side of the casing. At the other end of the casing, a lamp assembly has a conductor with a V-shaped annular portion forming a flared groove. Such annular portion is in electrical contact with the other battery terminal through the positive and negative terminals of a lamp. A switch member in the form of a long loop of conductive material return bent at both ends is slidable lengthwise of the casing to connect and disconnect the base and lamp conductors. The leading end of the switch loop fits in the flared groove of the conductor for a reliable electrical connection.

Abstract: The stop where the shoulder belt restraint is composed of four parallel, coplanar, cylindrical rods bridging between side plates. Each end of each rod is connected to a side plate by a tongue joint including a bellied split tongue snap fitted into a socket. The webbing of the restraint passes sinuously through the stop rods having at least two convolutions under one rod and over the adjacent rod.
