  • Patent number: 6045098
Abstract: A keyboard suppport includes a support body having a throughpassage that passes through the support body and opens on opposite sides of the support body. The support body also defines a support surface configured to accomodate a keyboard such as a keyboard for inputting alphanumeric symbols to a personal computer. A moveable mouse support fits within a portion of the throughpassage of the support and extends outwardly from the support to define a mouse support surface having a region that extends in front of a front edge of a keyboard with the keyboard resting the support surface. Although the term "mouse" has become almost universally used for the rolling input device used to move an arrow on the display screen and "pick" functions or data values, other terms such as "trackball" can be used interchangeably with the term "mouse".

  • Patent number: 6044366
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and apparatus for generating a tabulation of counts of occurrences of value combinations of a set of attributes over a relation consisting of a set of database records. The gathered counts (also referred to as sufficient statistics) of attribute occurrences or correlation counts is most preferably used in building a classification or density estimation model from the database records that can be used to predict some attribute values based on other attribute values. A new SQL operator designated the `UNPIVOT` operator operates by scanning the database records and for each record reorganizes that data to form an UNPIVOTED data record that include the combinations of attribute name, attribute value and the values for one or more selected class attributes. The UNPIVOTED table can be used to produce the desired sufficient statistics in one scan of the data using standard database engines.

  • Patent number: 6039699
Abstract: A catheter guidewire has a relatively flexible distal portion to facilitate the steering of the guidewire through the cardiovascular system of a subject and the capability of the guidewire to reach a deposit region within a relatively tortuous portion of the cardiovascular system. The guidewire also has a relatively stiff proximal portion to facilitate the pushing of the guidewire through the cardiovascular system from an entry point of the subject. For one embodiment, the guidewire includes a corewire and a sleeve secured to the corewire such that the sleeve surrounds a proximal portion of the corewire. The sleeve is formed from a material having a relatively greater stiffness than the material for the corewire. The sleeve may be formed from stainless steel, for example, to provide for a relatively stiff proximal portion of a corewire formed from a material exhibiting superelastic properties, such as a nickel-titanium or Nitinol alloy for example.

  • Patent number: 6036355
Abstract: A continuous dynamic mixing assembly includes a mixing chamber having an inner wall which is generally symmetrical about a central axis. At least one first fluid inlet introduces first fluid material into the mixing chamber. At least one second fluid inlet introduces second fluid material into the mixing chamber. At least one outlet permits fluid to leave the mixing chamber. First baffles extend along the inner wall generally parallel to the axis for disrupting fluid flow generally circumferentially in the mixing chamber. Second baffles extend generally transverse to the axis for disrupting fluid flow generally axially in the mixing chamber. A rotatable agitator includes a cylindrical central portion extending in the mixing chamber along the axis and has at least one blade having a twisted orientation on the central portion. A relative construction and arrangement among the first baffles, the second baffles and the agitator enable residence time of fluid in the reactor to be selectively adjusted.

  • Patent number: 6034752
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes cell wall structure and a chiral nematic liquid crystal material. The cell wall structure and the liquid crystal cooperate to form focal conic and twisted planar textures that are stable in the absence of a field. A device applies an electric field to the liquid crystal for transforming at least a portion of the material to at least one of the focal conic and twisted planar textures. The liquid crystal material has a pitch length effective to reflect radiation having a wavelength in both the visible and the infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum at intensity that is sufficient for viewing by an observer. One liquid crystal material may be disposed in a single region or two liquid crystal materials may be used, each in separate regions. One aspect of the invention is directed to a photolithography method for patterning a substrate of the display. The display may also have multicolor capabilities by including at least two materials that reflect visible light.

  • Patent number: 6030264
Abstract: A Rotatable lighting assembly includes a base with a central concave wall that can face a liquid surface and a peripheral portion extending around the concave wall. A shell is constructed so as to extend from the peripheral portion to form a chamber around the concave wall that provides the lighting assembly with buoyancy. A lamp has a lower light-emitting portion and an electrical contact portion. The electrical contact portion is disposed in an interior region formed by the concave wall. Electrical wire is electrically connected to the contact portion of the lamp. Structure in the base directs electrical wire from a lower portion of the base into the liquid.

  • Patent number: 6029535
Abstract: An over-the-highway truck or tractor equipped with a gear shift lever selectively foldable from an operating position to a folded position is disclosed. The gear shift lever includes upper and lower lever portions relatively telescopically and rotatably connected. The upper lever portion includes a generally L-shaped slot, while the lower lever portion carries a pin slidably engageable with and guided by the L-shaped slot for relative guiding movement of the lever portions. A tapered leg of the slot is arranged to allow relatively telescopic and pivotal movement between the lever portions and a foot of the slot extends laterally from the leg. The foot allows relatively rotatable movement between the lever portions to engage the pin and foot in the operating position. A coil spring urges the lever portions apart so that when the pin is within the leg the lever portions are relatively moveable axially.

  • Patent number: 6019286
Abstract: A portable data collection device is disclosed. The device includes an imaging assembly including a two dimensional (2D) photosensor array overlied by a RGB color filter. The imaging assembly is selectively actuatable with a first trigger for reading a dataform in the imaging assembly's target area and actuatable with a second trigger for capturing a color image of the target area. In one operating embodiment of the portable data collection device of the present invention, actuating the first trigger results in the imaging assembly capturing an image of the target area including a dataform and an associated image area of interest. The image area of interest is at a predetermined position with respect to the dataform. The imaging assembly decodes the dataform and outputs a compressed, digital representation of the image area of interest along with decoded data from the dataform.

  • Patent number: 6016695
Abstract: A tire uniformity testing system includes a testing station mounted on a gantry-like frame structure and an inlet conveyor located adjacent to the testing station. The inlet conveyor receives a tire and centers the tire such that its rotational axis is located at predetermined distance from the rotational axis of the testing station, and a conveyor transports the tire to the testing station. The testing station includes rotatable chuck assembly for engaging and rotating a tire which in turn is engaged by a loadwheel that generates tire uniformity data. The inlet conveyor is mechanically isolated from the testing station. The frame forming part of the testing station includes a plurality of I-beams joined together in flange abutting relationship which, in addition to producing a mechanically rigid structure, provides spaces defined between the flanges of the beams that are suitable for routing electrical wiring, pneumatic or hydraulic lines, etc.
