  • Patent number: 7281852
Abstract: A spindle motor is provided comprising a fixed shaft capable of being fastened at either end to the base and cover of the disc drive. The hub which rotates around the disc drive is supported for rotation by a journal bearing and thrust bearing, with the thrust bearing grooved surfaces being defined in gaps immediately adjacent the ends of the journal bearing. A fluid recirculation path is provided through the rotating sleeve connecting the surfaces adjacent the thrust bearings, with the asymmetry which provides the fluid circulation either being inherently present due to tolerances in the bearing and groove design, or specifically provided by asymmetry in the bearing groove pattern. An asymmetric sealing system employs a pumping seal adjacent a radial end of the thrust plate near the base of the housing, and a shorter pumping seal defined adjacent a radial end of the thrust plate distal from the base.

  • Patent number: 7224552
Abstract: A robust spindle motor is provided having added shock resistance for fluid containment. In an aspect, a high-speed centrifugal capillary seal contains a fluid reservoir extending between similarly rotatable components. Fluid is recirculated through the motor and substantially around a counterplate. Proper axial positioning of motor components and stiffness is maintained in motors supporting heavy loads such as a disk drive memory system having a weighty disc pack. In an aspect, two separate thrust surfaces provide oppositely directed axial forces acting on motor components. In an aspect, a single thrust plate that is comparatively small is utilized, reducing power consumption. Also, a thrust bearing situated inboard of a capillary seal forms a comparatively small diameter thrust plate gap. The comparatively small diameter thrust plate gap increases efficiency and characteristics including surface flatness, run out and perpendicularity are improved.

  • Patent number: 7144482
Abstract: An apparatus, method and means is provided for electrochemical machining of hydrodynamic bearing assemblies in spindle motors. In an aspect, a cartridge is provided that receives and accurately positions an electrode in three dimensions in a near frictionless manner. The electrode reaches and maintains an equilibrium position in response to a first and second predetermined force, the equilibrium position being a predetermined three dimensional orientation relative to the work piece and defining a critical orifice with the work piece. In an aspect, a hydrostatic bearing is employed within the electrode for radially adjusting the electrode.

  • Patent number: 7133250
Abstract: An inboard thrust surface is provided for a spindle motor that maintains fluid flow through a journal bearing and generates an added offset pressure to avoid any subambient pressure within a journal. In an aspect, journal bearing asymmetry is minimized or eliminated and axial span is increased between journal bearings, reducing wobble or run-out between relatively rotating components. In another aspect, journal axial length is decreased for low profile disc drive memory systems and other spindle motors. In an aspect, two separate thrust surfaces provide an axial force in the same direction, opposing an axial bias force created by interaction of a stator and a magnet, and minimizing power consumption.

  • Patent number: 7122922
Abstract: A base plate for a spindle motor is provided defining a minimal axial gap with a relatively rotatable magnet. In an example, a surface of the base plate is positioned at 0.1 mm from an adjacent surface of a relatively rotatable magnet. The base plate is comprised of a composite material such that stiffness is improved and acoustic vibration is reduced, while maintaining low power consumption and a fast start-up time. A first material, being a nonmagnetic material is employed adjacent to a motor magnet, and a second material having a preferred stiffness is employed at a greater radial distance from the magnet than the radial distance between a stator and the magnet.

  • Patent number: 7056026
Abstract: Improved capillary sealing is provided for withstanding shock events, vibration and evaporation, for use with fluid dynamic bearings. In an aspect, minimal axial space is occupied by a fluid reservoir and the sealing system and method withstands at least 1000 G shock events. A fluid reservoir having a capillary surface is formed between diverging walls. A fluid fill pool, separate from the fluid reservoir and having a steeper angle than the fluid reservoir, is positioned adjacent to a fluid fill hole. The fill pool, having a greater diverging angle than the fluid reservoir provides an unstable region for fluid to remain and any fluid is pulled by capillary force gradient to the fluid reservoir.

  • Patent number: 7056024
Abstract: A through hub fill hole and air vent having an enlarged fluid diffusion path is provided for spindle motors. Oil leakage and evaporation from a motor is reduced. In an aspect, oil is retained under conditions of at least a 1000 G shock event. In an aspect, the hub fill hole has a varying diameter and geometry, and is angled, further reducing oil leakage. In an aspect, an additional cavity is employed within the hub, for maintaining rotor rotational balance. The process of filling oil into a spindle motor is made easier from a motor set up and tooling perspective. Removal of the hub and other motor components is not necessary for filling a motor. Large diameter oil fill dispenser heads, subambient and ambient fill processes, and micro dispenser fill processes may be utilized. A measured and controlled amount of oil can be dispensed, reducing variability in the motor filling process.

  • Patent number: 6961214
Abstract: A method and system is provided for achieving good dynamic performance and negligible wear to spindle motor components. In an aspect, a disc drive storage system is provided having a hydro bearing surface coating for meeting bearing gap tolerance design specifications. In an aspect, the surface coating is a non-reactive coating of diamond like carbon (DLC), applied with physical vapor deposition (PVD). In an aspect, the surface coating nullifies any taper of an opposing surface coating. In an aspect, the hydro bearing, with an applied coating, defines a uniform gap between 0.5 microns and 6 microns.

  • Patent number: 6921993
Abstract: Stator and base plate interface alignment is provided for a spindle motor, meeting design specifications such that motor performance is maintained. A portion of a surface of the stator is separated from the base plate. Accurate stator z-height, parallelism and concentricity are provided for use with a low profile disc drive memory system. In an aspect, laminations are formed about a stator and the bottom layer laminations are formed with a smaller diameter than the top layer lamination. The stator bottom layer laminations seat on a flat base plate machined surface, avoiding a base plate corner radius. Precise machining of a small corner interface of the base plate where a stator is typically seated and aligned with the base plate is made unnecessary. Component machining costs, wear and tear to machining systems, and machining process cycle times are reduced.
