  • Patent number: 6610909
Abstract: A process for commercially propagating plants by tissue culture in such a way as both to conserve desired plant morphology and to transform the plant with respect to one or more desired genes. The method includes the steps of (a) creating an Agrobacterium vector containing the gene sequence desired to be transferred to the propagated plant, preferably together with a marker gene; (b) taking one or more petiole explants from a mother plant and inoculating them with the Agrobacterium vector; (c) conducting callus formation in the petiole sections in culture, in the dark; and (d) culturing the resulting callus in growth medium containing a benzylamino growth regulator such as benzylaminopurine or, most preferably, benzylaminopurineriboside. Additional optional growth regulators including auxins and cytokinins (indole butyric acid, benzylamine, benzyladenine, benzylaminopurine, alpha naphthylacetic acid and others known in the art) may also be present.

  • Patent number: 5994525
Abstract: The invention provides a vaccine for the prevention and/or the treatment of infection by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia, which vaccine contains at least an immunogenic part of at least one cytolytic protein of A. pleuropneumoniae produced by recombinant DNA, and detoxified derivatives thereof. Three of such cytolytic proteins are identified and a vaccine containing these, or parts or derivatives thereof, ensures protection against all known serotypes of A. pleuropneumoniae. The cytolytic proteins are produced by inserting a nucleotide sequence encoding one or more of the proteins or parts thereof in a host cell, cultivating the host cell and recovering the proteins. another vaccine contains the genetic information for one or more of the cytolytic proteins, and a passive vaccine contains antibodies against these proteins. The invention further provides monoclonal antibodies and DNA probes for use in diagnostics.

  • Patent number: 5976323
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and device for controlling a distillation or condensation apparatus including a distillation vessel, heat source and condenser. A distillation or condensation apparatus consumes considerable quantities of cooling water which is discharged, through a length of hose connected to the condenser, directly into the drain. The aim of the invention is to propose a method and device for controlling a distillation or condensation apparatus to ensure a significant reduction in cooling-water consumption. The method proposed achieves this by virtue of the fact that the cooling water flowing through the condenser of the distillation or condensation apparatus is passed round in a closed loop, its temperature is measured in this loop and, when an upper temperature limit is reached, cooling water is replaced by feeding in cold water until a lower temperature limit is reached.

  • Patent number: 5969774
Abstract: A programmable remote control transmitter has a programming mode and a controlling mode and is used to control electric devices such as television sets. The remote control transmitter has a memory for storing a limited number of remote control codes. There is a keypad for selecting one of the stored codes and a transmitter for transmitting the remote control signal corresponding to the selected remote control code to the electric device such as a television set. Remote control codes are able to be input to the memory of the remote control transmitter only when the remote control transmitter is in programming mode. In normal operation the remote control transmitter is in controlling mode. A removable key must be used to change the mode of the remote control transmitter from controlling mode to programming mode.

  • Patent number: 5956951
Abstract: An adjustable magneto-rheological fluid device includes a movable piston adjacent a first chamber containing a first hydraulic fluid for moving the piston. The first hydraulic fluid interacts with a flexible magneto-rheological compartment containing a magneto-rheological fluid that flows between a first magneto-rheological fluid chamber and a second magneto-rheological fluid chamber. By controlling the flow of the magneto-rheological fluid, the device controls the first hydraulic fluid in the first chamber to bias the piston in a first direction. Additionally, the magneto-rheological fluid device may include a second chamber, containing a second hydraulic fluid, spaced apart from the first chamber on the opposite side of the piston. The second hydraulic fluid interacts with the flexible magneto-rheological compartment allowing the device to control the second hydraulic fluid to bias the piston in a second direction opposite the first direction.

  • Patent number: 5914038
Abstract: A separating device comprises an endless carrier belt which supports a filter belt. Suction boxes for drawing off filtrate are placed on the side of the carrier belt. The carrier belt protrudes laterally into the continuous slot of the vacuum box. In a large separating installation with long carrier belts and filter belts lateral displacements of the carrier belt occur during operation, whereby sealing becomes a problem. These problems are resolved according to the invention in that the suction box has a sealing member connecting onto the side edge of the carrier belt and this sealing member is displaceable laterally.

  • Patent number: 5914248
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the controlled expression, in a lactic acid bacterium, of a DNA fragment containing one or more genes coding for a desired characteristic, wherein the DNA fragment is under the control of a promoter for a microbial gene which codes for an antimicrobial peptide, and the gene or genes are brought to expression on the DNA fragment by the addition of a suitable inducing factor for the transcription activation. The promoter is preferably the nisA promoter from Lactococcus lactis. The inducer is preferably acceptable for food products, and more preferentially is nisin or derivatives thereof. The invention also relates to a method for the production of proteins or RNA, as well as to a method for the preparation of dairy products using the expression system according to the invention. The invention finally relates to lactic acid bacteria and expression vectors for use in the method according to the invention.

  • Patent number: 5911781
Abstract: A hot strip mill for reducing metal strip product as the metal strip product is moved through the mill along a pass line includes at least one coiler furnace on one side of the pass line. Each coiler furnace has a coiling unit selectively receiving a strip product from the pass line and at least one drive motor coupled to the coiling unit for rotatably driving the coiling unit. Each drive motor is positioned on the same side of the pass line as the coiler furnace. The drive motor can be easily mounted on a drive motor support above a roller table for the hot strip mill. The drive motor support may be formed as a thermal barrier between the drive motor and the roller table. The present arrangement avoids redesign of the motor room of an existing mill.
