Patent number: 5760821Abstract: A system and method for localizing an aggregated electronic program guide (EPG) schedule covering a plurality of service environments includes an information filter located at the subscriber's set-top box conditioned to recognize which schedule information is relevant to the viewer's service environment. Only schedule information corresponding to the viewer's own service environment is stored in the EPG's schedule database. The result is an electronic program schedule that is tailored to the viewer's specific service environment without the use of costly equipment on the transmission side of the program schedule feed.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: June 2, 1998Assignees: News America Publications, Inc., Telecommunications of Colorado, Inc.Inventors: Michael Dean Ellis, Barry L. Patent number: 5737508Abstract: A method for automatically placing objects on a surface in proximity to corresponding predetermined locations without collision with such locations or other objects by defining a distance dependent attractive force between each object and the corresponding location which increases with increasing distance between the object and the location, and defining distance dependent repulsive force between each object and its neighboring objects and locations, such repulsive force decreasing with increasing distance. The initial position for each object is established in proximity with the corresponding location in accordance with predetermined criteria. Thereafter the motion of the objects under the influence of such forces and of a frictional retarding force are determined by marginally stable incremental integration of such motion.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1994Date of Patent: April 7, 1998Assignee: Hammond, IncorporatedInventor: Mitchell Feigenbaum

Patent number: 5713738Abstract: A method for whitening teeth which utilizes laser light to activate bleaching agents applied to the teeth is disclosed. The mouth is first prepared so that the soft tissues of the gums are protected and only the teeth are exposed. The teeth are cleaned to remove any materials which will reduce or nullify the effects of the bleaching agents. A first bleaching composition comprising a peroxide compound is prepared and applied to the teeth. The teeth are exposed to laser light from an argon laser which light activates the peroxide to accelerate the bleaching process without heat. If further whitening is desired, a second bleaching composition comprising a peroxide compound is prepared and applied to the teeth. The teeth are briefly exposed to laser light from a carbon dioxide laser which heat activates the peroxide to accelerate the bleaching process.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1996Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: BriteSmile, Inc.Inventor: David K. Patent number: 5706392Abstract: Simultaneous and temporal masking of digital speech data is applied to an MBE-based speech coding technique to achieve additional, substantial compression of coded speech over existing coding techniques, while enabling synthesis of coded speech with minimal perceptual degradation relative to the human auditory system. A real-time perceptual coder and decoder is disclosed in which speech may be sampled at 10 kHz, coded at an average rate of less than 2 bits/sample, and reproduced in a manner that is perceptually transparent to a human listener. The coder compresses speech segments that are inaudible due to simultaneous or temporal masking, while audible speech segments are not compressed.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1995Date of Patent: January 6, 1998Assignee: Rutgers, The State University of New JerseyInventors: Randy G. Patent number: 5666645Abstract: A data management and distribution system for an electronic program guide ("EPG") for television programs comprising an automated data collection subsystem, a manual entry and correction subsystem, a database validation subsystem, an edition generation subsystem, a configuration subsystem, and a status and control subsystem. The system may further comprise a feed generation subsystem if one or more of the EPG providers supported by the EPG distributor requires a live feed of data. The automated data collection subsystem collects EPG data from multiple sources in various formats, filters the data based on the needs of the EPG providers supported, and places the data in a centralized database in a form suitable to support the different environmental contexts of the EPG providers. The manual entry and correction subsystem permits the EPG distributor to make manual corrections, additions, and deletions to the data stored in the database.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: News America Publications, Inc.Inventors: William Thomas, David W. Patent number: 5666466Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for robust, text-independent (and text-dependent) speaker recognition in which identification of a speaker is based on selected spectral information from the speaker's voice. Traditionally, speaker recognition systems (i) render a speech sample in the frequency domain to produce a spectrum, (ii) produce cepstrum coefficients from the spectrum, (iii) produce a codebook from the cepstrum coefficients, and (iv) use the codebook as the feature measure for comparing training speech samples with testing speech samples. The present invention, on the other hand, introduces the important and previously unknown step of truncating the spectrum prior to producing the cepstrum coefficients. Through the use of selected spectra as the feature measure for speaker recognition, the present invention has been shown to yield significant improvements in performance over prior art systems.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1994Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: Rutgers, The State University of New JerseyInventors: Qiguang Lin, James L. Patent number: 5652613Abstract: A television electronic program guide intelligent memory management system and method automatically deletes the least valuable stored program information at that moment as free memory space is needed by the system. In advance of a program schedule update, the system executes a two-level memory "housekeeping" operation in which the system first scans the memory to identify obsolete schedule information. If, after this sweep, there is insufficient memory available for the next update, the system performs a second-level memory "triage" operation wherein schedule information is automatically prioritized in accordance with pre-defined rules for assessing the current value of the information to each viewer based on program air time, channel and other variables relating to program utility. The system then deletes schedule information in ascending order of value, starting with the least valuable information, and continues until enough space is available in memory to store the schedule update.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: July 29, 1997Inventors: David Beryl Lazarus, Michael Dean Ellis

Patent number: 5576755Abstract: The system and method of the present invention provides for automated checking of the program listings data in a database of television program schedule listings used in an electronic program guide ("EPG"). The integrity of the program listings data is verified prior to transmission of the data to a cable or other pay television system (or prior to transmission to viewers). The verification system may be used to check the entire database or a user-defined subset of the database for one or more of the following: missing stations, schedule gaps and overlaps, missing titles, missing copy, missing fields, missing movie ratings, lengthy titles, lengthy copy, editorial errors, and inappropriate language. In this manner, the EPG provider ensures the integrity of the EPG data and substantially reduces the time required to manually check all of the data in the program listings database.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1994Date of Patent: November 19, 1996Inventors: Bruce Davis, Paul Darata, Michael Morris, Michele S.
