Patent number: 6169748Abstract: A system and method for providing QoS levels to received data units, such as ATM cells and/or Frame Relay Frames. A QoS level associated with a virtual connection is supported through allocation and management of resources used to process data units received over the connection. Resources used to support QoS levels are assigned to groups of connections referred to as “QoS groups”. Resources used to support one group of connections may be isolated from resources supporting other connections. When a connection is established, if a QoS group exists having the QoS level of the new connection, the connection may be added to that QoS group. Similarly, where the QoS levels for multiple connections must be modified, if those connections are within a single QoS group, then modification of the QoS level for that group would advantageously result in modification of the QoS for each virtual connection within the QoS group.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1999Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignees: Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc., Fujitsu LimitedInventors: Steve N. Patent number: 6157647Abstract: A technique for more directly transmitting information between devices in different virtual local area networks ("VLANs") in a local area network ("LAN") is disclosed. A VLAN tag is used to forward a packet into the VLAN in which the destination device resides by attaching the VLAN tag associated with the destination device to each transmission. Devices that are not associated with the VLAN specified by the VLAN tag are thereby segregated from the packet and LAN background traffic overhead is reduced. To determine the appropriate VLAN tag the sending device transmits a NHRP query requesting connectivity information between the sender and receiver, and the receiver or an intermediary router responds with information including the VLAN tag of the receiver. Packets of data are then sent from the sending device to the receiving device with the VLAN tag of the receiver attached thereto so that a more direct connection is established with bridge hops replacing router hops.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1996Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: 3COM CorporationInventor: David J. Patent number: 6157931Abstract: A database of known commercial software programs ("Products") is maintained and employed as a template for selection of files for a backup operation. In particular, files which are part of known Products may be excluded during backup operations. Records indicating rules about which files within Product directories are included and excluded from the backup operation are also maintained in the database. Product directories may be determined from a registry or the hard disk may be scanned and directories checked against a list of known Product default directories. If the newly found directory does not match an entry in the list of default directories, then file list codes in the database are checked against the files in the directory to determine whether known Product files are present in the directory. Two types of exclusion commands are employed to identify files for exclusion from the backup operation by exploiting file creation and modification dates.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1997Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Connected CorporationInventors: David Cane, David Hirschman, Philip Speare, Lev Vaitzblit

Patent number: 6157024Abstract: A monitoring system for use in detecting the presence of an obstacle in or proximate to an aperture. Materials are applied to one or more reflecting surfaces adjacent the aperture, enabling the improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio in the system without requiring tuning the system for the particular environment. The choice of specific material depends upon the type of radiation used for aperture monitoring and whether an obstacle is detected as an increase or decrease in reflected radiation. A calibration LED within the monitoring system enables predictable performance over a range of temperatures. The monitoring system is also provided with the capacity to adjust to variations in the background-reflected radiation, either automatically by monitoring trends in system performance or by external command. The latter case includes the use of a further element for communicating to the monitoring system directly or indirectly.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1999Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Prospects, Corp.Inventors: Eugene R. Patent number: 6151300Abstract: Method and apparatus for extending lower-layer flow control end-to-end, transparent to network host systems, between network hosts attached to legacy networks without requiring any changes to the host networks or hosts themselves. In a first embodiment, a source host and a destination host, each residing on a respective LAN, communicate via an intermediate network supporting the lower-layer flow control. A higher-layer, end-to-end flow control protocol exists between the hosts. The lower-layer flow control protocol accounts for loss of bandwidth between each hop within the intermediate network. To extend the lower-layer flow control protocol to the hosts, an intelligent edge device of the intermediate network adjusts observed higher-layer flow control parameters based upon the state of the lower-layer flow control. No modifications to the legacy network or hosts is required, and the extension of flow control is transparent to the legacy networks.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1997Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignees: Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc., Fujitsu LimitedInventors: Douglas H.
