Patent number: 8142553Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method and apparatus for removing debris from an air cleaner of an internal combustion engine. The method includes receiving a flow of air from a source of air flow associated with an internal combustion engine at a first end portion of a conduit and passing the flow of air towards a second end portion of the conduit. The method also includes passing the flow of air into a scavenging conduit of the air cleaner towards an exhaust end of the scavenging conduit and creating a suction pressure at an end of the scavenging conduit connected to the air cleaner. The suction pressure results in a drawing in of the debris from the air cleaner.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2009Date of Patent: March 27, 2012Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Xiaoming Tan, Mehdi M. Daragheh

Patent number: 7894963Abstract: A machine is provided. The machine includes an engine, an engine speed sensor, a transmission, a transmission status sensor, a pump, and a controller. The engine speed sensor is configured to sense the speed of the engine. The transmission is coupled to the engine. The transmission status sensor is configured to sense the status of the transmission. The pump is coupled to the engine and has a first torque mode and a second torque mode. The controller is in communication with the engine speed sensor and the transmission status sensor and is operable to automatically switch the pump from the first torque mode to the second torque mode based on the engine speed and the transmission status.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2007Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Anil Shenoy, John R. Connolly

Patent number: 7849688Abstract: A method and system for retarding an engine of a machine is provided. The machine has a hydraulic pump driven by the engine, a motor driven by the hydraulic pump, and a fan driven by the motor. The method includes sensing the operating speed of the engine with an engine speed sensor. The method also includes operating the motor at a first pressure. The method also includes comparing the operating speed to a trigger speed. The method also includes operating the motor at a second pressure greater than the first pressure if the operating speed of engine exceeds the trigger speed by a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2007Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Assignee: Caterpillar IncInventors: Paul A. Dvorak, Christopher M. Elliott

Patent number: 7757806Abstract: An adjustable operator interface for a work machine is provided. The adjustable operator interface has an operator compartment with a forward direction, and includes a seat, a mounting plate, an armrest and an armbar. The seat is secured within the operator compartment. The mounting plate is also secured within the operator compartment. The armbar bracket is slidably disposed along the forward direction on the mounting plate. The armbar is pivotally attached to the armbar bracket.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2005Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: Caterpillar SARLInventor: Robert M. Bower

Patent number: 7611204Abstract: A rotary adjustment mechanism is provided. The rotary adjustment mechanism has a first member, a second member, a first gear, a second gear, a locking gear, a spring, and a release. The first gear is rotationally attached to the first member. The second member is pivotally attached to the first member. The second gear is rotationally attached to the second member. The locking gear is moveable from a first position coupling the first gear with the second gear to a second position decoupling the first gear with the second gear. The spring biases the locking gear towards the first position. The release is coupled to the locking gear and selectively moves the locking gear to the second position.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2006Date of Patent: November 3, 2009Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Reed, Lyle E. York

Patent number: 7578651Abstract: A method of lifting a boom assembly for a machine along a lift path is provided. The machine has a work implement coupled to the boom assembly. The method includes initially moving the work implement vertically from a lowered position to a first intermediate position forward of the lowered position. The method also includes subsequently moving the work implement vertically from the first intermediate position along a slightly rearwardly inclined direction to a second intermediate position rearward of the first intermediate position. The method also includes subsequently moving the work implement vertically from the second intermediate position along a slightly forwardly inclined direction to a third intermediate position forward of the second intermediate position. The method also includes finally moving the work implement vertically from the third intermediate position along a slightly rearward inclined direction to a final position rearward of the first, second, and third intermediate positions.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2006Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Assignee: Caterpillar S.A.R.L.Inventors: Michael C. Layko, Jeffrey M. Parker

Patent number: 7426909Abstract: A cooling system for a machine is provided. The machine has an operator compartment, a front end, and an engine cooled by a first heat exchanger and mounted within an engine compartment. The engine compartment is positioned behind the operator compartment in relation to the front end. A fan is mounted within the engine compartment and has an inlet and a first and a second outlet. A second heat exchanger is fluidically coupled to the fan and the engine and mounted within the engine compartment. A first fluid flow path extends from ambient to the inlet. A second fluid flow path extends from the first outlet to ambient and extends through the second heat exchanger. A third fluid flow path extends from the second outlet to ambient and extends through the first heat exchanger, and is thermally isolated from the second fluid flow path.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2006Date of Patent: September 23, 2008Assignee: Caterpillar S.A.R.L.Inventors: William J.
