Abstract: An improved form of calcium carbonate which is acid resistant to enable its use as a filler material in the making of neutral to weakly acid paper, and a process for producing this acid resistant calcium carbonate are provided. This acid resistant calcium carbonate comprises a mixture of at least about 0.1 percent, based on the dry weight of the calcium carbonate, of sodium carbonate, together with at least about 0.1 percent, based on the dry weight of the calcium carbonate, of a mixture of weak acids in admixture with the calcium carbonate.
Abstract: Polyether polyamino methylene phosphonates, which possess high calcium tolerance and have been found to give excellent inhibition of the formation, deposition and adherence of scale-forming salts, especially calcium carbonate, in aqueous systems involving severe conditions which include elevated pH, high dissolved solids content, and high saturation levels of calcium carbonate, are degraded by the oxidizing biocides bromine and chlorine used to control microbial growth in such aqueous systems. It has been found that organic sulfonamides provide excellent protection against such degradation when they are added to the aqueous system along with the polyether polyamino methylene phosphonate scale inhibitors.
Abstract: Methods for minimizing deposits in boilers, furnaces, incinerators or other systems firing tire derived fuels when burned in combination with other fuels which may include fuel oils are disclosed. These methods include treating the fuels so as to raise the magnesium content of the fuels or their combustion products comprising adding to the fuels one or more magnesium-containing compounds. The methods of treating tire derived fuels when they are burned with other fuels not including fuel oils includes adding to the fuel a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water. The method of treating tire derived fuels when they are burned in combination with other fuels including fuel oils involves adding to the fuel a compound containing a magnesium-based slag mitigation component and a heavy metal combustion catalyst.
Abstract: The use of falling-film evaporation and a concentration means such as centrifugal separation to dehydrate and concentrate a water-in-oil polymer emulsion or suspension is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a water-in-oil polymer composition containing less than about 25% active polymer solids is dehydrated in falling-film evaporator to produce an evaporator concentrate containing less than about 5.0% water. The evaporator concentrate then flows to a separation device such as a centrifuge, wherein oil is removed to produce a composition that is substantially a polymer and emulsifying surfactant-in-oil composition containing in excess of about 60 weight % polymer solids. The centrifuge raffinate may optionally be treated in a second separation means to capture additional polymer solids, with optional recycle of the oil-rich raffinate. The concentrated polymer composition is preferably stabilized with a steric stabilizer to produce a free flowing liquid product.
