Abstract: A pharmaceutical composition comprising a crystalline sugar alcohol derived from at least one mono- or polysaccharide having uniformly dispersed within its crystal matrix particles of at least one pharmaceutically active compound is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of producing such a uniformly dispersed pharmaceutical composition by the controlled crystallization of the molten sugar alcohol having the pharmaceutically active material dispersed therein.
Abstract: A metal extraction process in which an aqueous leach solution containing metal values is contacted with a solution, in a water-immiscible organic solvent, of an extracting agent where the aqueous leach solution contains a wetting agent in a concentration of not more than 0.1% by weight. Wetting agents which may be used include alkoxylated alcohols or phenols, especially alcohols condensed with both ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, and ethylene oxide/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide block copolymers. The wetting agent can be present at a concentration of 0.00001% w/v or less. The presence of the wetting agent may reduce the build up of solid as crud and/or may reduce entrainment of one phase in the other.
Abstract: Mannitol having the crystalline form of gamma sorbitol is made by co-crystallizing relatively high mannitol containing sorbitol melt in a twin screw mixer. Tablets, chocolate and chewing gum made with the co-crystallized product offer improvements similar to those realized with pure crystalline components.
Abstract: Stabilized aqueous polymer latex compositions comprising: (A) a polymeric latex particle; (B) a protective colloid; and (C) a polyoxyalkylene-containing alkyd resin which is the reaction product of (i) at least one polyoxyalkylene, (ii) at least one polyol; (iii) at least one polycarboxylic acid anhydride; and (iv) at least one monocarboxylic acid are disclosed. Also detailed is a method of producing such a stabilized polymer latex composition.
Abstract: Concentrated aqueous solutions of 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one are prepared by incorporating a buffering agent such that the pH of the solution is between about 3.0 and 7.0, and further adding a sufficient amount of glutaraldehyde such that a greater amount of such 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one is in solution than would be in solution if such glutaraldehyde were not present. Also disclosed is a synergistic biocidal composition comprising glutaraldehyde and 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, as well as an aqueous-based industrial composition comprising such synergistic biocidal composition.

Abstract: Sunscreen compositions comprising at least one bis-1,3-diketone derivatives of benzene and a cosmetically acceptable carrier are described. Also disclosed is a method of protecting human skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation employing such sunscreen composition.
Abstract: Oligomeric polyesters and polyamides containing dipiperidyl triazine moieties are effective light stabilizers for synthetic polymers and particularly polyolefins.
Abstract: A halogenated ethylene compound of the formula:X CR.sub.1 R.sub.2 C(Y.sub.1).dbd.C(Y.sub.2)CR.sub.1 R.sub.2 SCNwhere R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl or together form a cyclohexyl group; X is bromine, chlorine or iodine and Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are chlorine, bromine or iodine. A compound of this type is 2,3-dibromo-1-chloro-4-thiocyanato-2-butene. The compound has good anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. The compound can be used as an industrial biocide.
Abstract: An aqueous solution containing palladium is contacted with a solution of a heterocyclic ring compound having at least one ring substituent of the type --COX, which is, or contains, a hydrocarbyl group having at least 5 carbon atoms. The heterocyclic ring compound may be a pyridine mono-, di- or tri-carboxylic acid ester, for example the bis-isodecyl ester of pyridine- 3,5-dicarboxylic acid. Other heterocyclic ring compounds include those having a pyrimidine, pyrazine, pyridazine, 1,2,4-triazole or imidazole ring. Palladium is extracted into the water-immiscible solution while other metals, particularly platinum group metals, remain in the aqueous solution. The palladium can be stripped from the water-immiscible solution for example using a dilute aqueous solution of ammonia.
Abstract: Sunscreen compositions are described which contain certain 1-cyclohexenylacetonitrile derivatives of aldehydes which act as UV filters when incorporated in a carrier in amounts ranging from 0.1-50% by weight.
Abstract: A composition which comprises (a) a salt of monovalent metal (M) of a carboxylic acid in which the COOH group is attached to a ring atom of a fused ring system and (b) a grease which is a non-soap thickened oil which may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as a silicone oil. The metal (M) may be sodium. The fused ring system is preferably a fused aromatic hydrocarbon ring system such as naphthalene and may include further substituents, for example an -OH group, in addition to the COOH group. If the acid contains both OH and COOH groups, these can be attached to adjacent atoms of the fused ring system. Sodium 2-naphthoate and sodium 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate have been found to be particularly suitable. The grease has improved corrosion resistance and the addition of the metal compound does not result in destructing of the grease.
Abstract: Novel hindered hydroxyphenyl alkyl isocyanurates are provided which are useful as stabilizers of resins made from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
Abstract: Sunscreen compositions are described which contain certain cyclohexenylidene cyanoacetate esters and amides which act as UV filters when incorporated in a carrier in amounts ranging from 0.1-50% by weight.

Abstract: Tetramethylpiperidyl terminated triazine oligomeric esters and amides having a plurality of tetramethyl piperidyl moieties are useful as polymer additives to impart resistance to degradation when exposed to actinic radiation.
Abstract: Triazine-based compounds having a multiplicity of 2,2,6,6-tetraalkyl piperidine moieties are light and thermal stabilizers for organic polymers.
Abstract: An improved antistaling agent for baked goods such as bread can be prepared by steeping a bacteral protease in an aqueous alcohol, i.e. ethanol, solution containing flour for a period of time sufficient to prepare the antistaling agent. The alcohol is then separated without removing the alcohol soluble products obtained during the treatment such as by evaporation under vacuum. The wet product can be dried to obtain a powdered antistaling agent.
