  • Patent number: 5975754
Abstract: A method is provided for extending the life of a refractory lining of a blast furnace hearth. The refractory hearth has temperature probes embedded in the floor and walls thereof. The method includes periodically measuring temperatures indicated by the probes and determining the campaign maximum and current average temperature readings to locate two solidification isotherm representing the wear line of the refractory and the inner surface of the protective metal layer. The thickness of the protective layer is determined from the distance between the solidification isotherms representing the refractory wear line and the inner surface of the metal skull. From this determination sufficient thickness of the protective layer is maintained during actual operation of the furnace.

  • Patent number: 5890805
Abstract: A method is provided for on-line monitoring of the wear of a refractory lining of a blast furnace and for extending the life of said lining. The method includes determining the wear line of the lining from signals of temperature probes embedded at spaced locations across the thickness of the refractory using a one dimensional heat transfer model to locate a first approximation of a solidification isotherm of hot metal in the furnace, using the one dimensional heat transfer approximation as an initial boundary in a moving boundary calculation of a two dimensional heat transfer model and iterating the two dimensional model to find a final location of the isotherm by minimizing the difference between the measured and predicted temperatures of the thermoprobes.

  • Patent number: 4717422
Abstract: A method of making a composition suitable for application to metal products for anti-scaling purposes or to produce legible markings on said products, said method comprising; providing first and second soluble alkali metal silicate solutions, preferably soluble sodium silicate solutions having silicate ratios of about 2.0 to 2.8 and 3.0 to 3.9, respectively. The two starting solutions are mixed to form a third solution. The cross-linking binder material is added to one of the solutions prior to addition of the other solid materials or to the combined silicate solutions. Finally, the other solids and water as needed are added to provide the above-mentioned composition. Utilizing the two diverse starting solutions provides a final mixture having a lower viscosity than when a single soluble silicate starting solution of equivalent SiO.sub.2 ratio is used.

  • Patent number: 4711429
Abstract: A tundish is provided with a mixing zone below an entry station where a stream of molten metal from a ladle enters the tundish. The mixing zone utilizes the force from the ladle stream to create sufficient turbulence for mixing alloying elements, particularly alloying elements such as lead having density greater than that of the molten metal with the metal in the tundish. The invention also includes a process for uniformly mixing alloying element with molten metal in the tundish. The process is particularly suited to making lead-bearing free machining steels on a continuous caster.

  • Patent number: 4615375
Abstract: A load signal representing the load between a mold and an oscillating mechanism is separated into its static offset and dynamic components. The static offset signal is compared with a free-running static offset to obtain a substantially DC signal representing the DC component of mold friction. A DC voltage is generated corresponding to the RMS value of the dynamic load signal component, and a reference voltage corresponding to the RMS value of the dynamic signal component of a free-running load signal is subtracted in order to obtain a substantially DC signal representing the dynamic component of mold friction.
