Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of 2-hydroxy-4-(hydroxyalkoxy)-benzophenone. More particularly the invention is directed to the oxyalkylation of 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone, using C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkylene oxides in the presence of a basic catalyst and water. Such products are useful as ultraviolet light absorbers.
Abstract: A generally open support ring is mounted onto the internal surface of a distillation tower. The support ring includes a seat rim and a plurality of mechanical elements which secure the seat rim to the internal surface of the tower. The plurality of mechanical elements are attached to both the inner surface and the seat rim. Each mechanical element protrudes from the inner surface and is spaced apart from the other mechanical elements. The plurality of mechanical elements enable the seat rim to be mounted along a substantially horizontal plane around the internal surface of the tower. The support ring is adapted to support an open container of liquid thereon in such a manner that vapor below the support ring is in fluid communication with vapor above the support ring through a series of vent openings in the support ring.

Abstract: A polyether polycarbonate block copolymer nonionic surface-active agent and method for making the same. The polyether polycarbonate surface active agent is comprised of a hydrophilic portion comprised of a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyoxyalkylene polyether, a saccharide, a saccharide polyoxyalkylenate, a polycarbonate having a carbon dioxide content of from about 1 to 15 molar percent and mixtures thereof and a hydrophobic portion comprising alkylene and carbonate units arranged in alternating or random order to form a poly(alkylene carbonate) having a total carbon dioxide content of from about 25 to 50 molar percent and a total molecular weight of from about 300 to 10,000. The hydrophobic portion is bonded to the hydrophilic portion at each side of a reactive hydrogen. The surface active agent is prepared by polymerizing the hydrophilic portion with the hydrophobic portion in a weight ratio of about 10:90 to 90:10.

Abstract: White graft polymer dispersions in polyoxyalkylene polyether polyols are employed together with flame retardant compounds to prepare flame retardant polyurethane foams. The polymer dispersions employ less than 0.1 mole of induced unsaturation per mole of polyol mixture. Improved processes for the reparation of these polymer dispersions employ either isomerized maleate containing polyetherester polyols or polyetherester polyols prepared by reacting a polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol, a polycarboxylic acid anhydride and an alkylene oxide in the presence of salts and oxides of divalent metals.
