  • Patent number: 4073399
Abstract: An improved tear-off closure for a container comprising a top end wall, a depending closure skirt around the top end wall and a pull ring around the bottom edge of the closure skirt. The closure has a pair of score lines therein traversing the skirt and the top end wall to define a tear strip across the closure. The pull ring is integrally connected to the tear strip at the bottom of the closure skirt. A line of separation between the pull ring and the closure skirt extends from a location adjacent the score line on one side of the tear strip around the closure skirt to a location adjacent the score line on the other side of the tear strip. The curved terminal ends of the line of separation are spaced from the tear strip laterally of the score lines on both sides of the tear strip.

  • Patent number: 4060408
Abstract: A process is disclosed for burning hydrocarbons in the vapors emitted from contaminated metallic scrap in a remelt furnace having a molten bath therein. The furnace comprises a charging chamber and a heating chamber separated by a wall. The wall is provided with at least one lower opening and at least one upper opening through which the chambers are in communication above and below the level of molten metal. Scrap is charged into the charging chamber where molten metal ablatively melts the charge. Oil and other surface contaminants evolving from the charge are drawn through the upper opening in the wall into the heating chamber by maintaining a pressure in the heating chamber less than, or negative in relation to, the pressure in the charging chamber. The hydrocarbon vapors burn in the heating chamber and contribute heat of combustion. Controlling the level of pressure differential between the heating chamber and the charging chamber facilitates substantial benefits in efficiency and economy.

  • Patent number: 4039419
Abstract: A positioning device is disclosed comprising a jack screw having a stationary guide housing, an externally helically threaded shaft through the housing and a retainer threadably engaged onto the shaft, and a rotatable ratchet having a head mounted on a top portion of the shaft. The positioning device further comprises at least one fluid cylinder and a piston fitting inside a mating chamber in the cylinder, a piston rod extending from the piston and connected to the ratchet and means for reciprocally driving the piston in the chamber. Each stroke of the piston and attached piston rod displaces the ratchet arm rotating the ratchet head and the shaft connected thereto, thereby displacing the retainer along the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4033441
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and means for combining two merging streams of small parts having heads and shanks comprising progressing each of the streams in the same general direction and with the heads aligned and the shanks transverse to the direction of progression. The streams, or paths, are lead at different levels and in different horizontal positions at the last part of the progression and then the streams or paths are progressively merged at the last part of the progression in at least the horizontal direction so the shanks of the parts in one path become interposed between the heads of the parts in the other path as the paths are merged into a single path without stoppage.

  • Patent number: 4003494
Abstract: An improved method of forming and construction for a tabless, digitally openable sheet metal container component including at least two inwardly displaceable, adjacently disposed opening panels. The opening panels are substantially rigid and are located within an integral deflectable portion projecting outwardly from the general plane of the surface wall of the container component and having a common deflectable surface between the opening panels in the form of a raised bridge of metal therebetween designed to respond to digitally applied pressure creating stress sufficient to initiate substantially simultaneous fracture of frangible webs which define the loci of separation of the opening panels. The container component is formed by opposed die sets which, in a single operation, extrude metal from between opposing die surfaces to produce a thin residual of metal in the frangible web around each opening panel and form the deflectable portions around the opening panels.
