  • Patent number: 6302210
Abstract: A subsurface safety valve has a tubular valve housing, a valve closure member movable between an open and a closed position, an axially shiftable flow tube for opening the valve closure member. Hydraulic pressure from the control line is used to move a piston, which in turn moves an axially shiftable opening prong through the closure member. A balance line, or second hydraulic line is also used to make the valve well insensitive. An isolation valve is placed in the flow path of the second hydraulic line. The isolation valve prevents gas migration into the balance line. It also provides volume control for the fluid displaced when the piston is moved by pressure from the control line. Further, the valve can be closed by the application of sufficient pressure through the second hydraulic line.

  • Patent number: 6298919
Abstract: A method of servicing a well and an associated well system provide convenient downhole hydraulic path selection. In a described embodiment, a hydraulic path selector is preconfigured for selection of a desired hydraulic path set, and then the selector is conveyed into a tubular string in which a hydraulic manifold is connected to one or more hydraulically operable tools. When engaged with the manifold, the selector selects the appropriate hydraulic path set, which selection determines which tool is to be operated and/or in what manner the tool is to be operated. In another described embodiment, the selector is operated after engagement with the manifold to select the appropriate path set.

  • Patent number: 6289926
Abstract: A flapper valve assembly (120) for controlling fluid flow therethrough is disclosed. The flapper valve assembly (120) comprises a tubular valve housing having a valve chamber. A valve seat (124) is mounted within the housing. The valve seat (124) has a valve seat sealing surface (126). The valve seat (124) also has an internal load bearing shoulder (134). A flapper closure plate (122) is rotatably disposed within the valve chamber. The flapper closure plate (122) is rotatable between a valve open position in which the flapper closure plate (122) is removed from the valve seat (124) and a valve closed position in which the sealing surface (128) of the flapper closure plate (122) sealingly engages the valve seat sealing surface (126) for preventing flow through the flapper valve assembly (120). The maximum travel of the flapper closure plate (122) in the closed position is defined by the internal load bearing shoulder (134) of the valve seat (124).

  • Patent number: 6286596
Abstract: A self-regulating lift fluid injection tool (100) adapted for placement within production tubing (30). The tool (100) has a control valve (126) that controls the rate of injection of a lift fluid (102) into the formation fluids (104) being produced through the production tubing (30). A sensor (140) monitors the flow rate of the formation fluids (104) through the production tubing (30). The sensor (140) generates a signal indicative the flow rate of the formation fluids (104) which is sent to an electronics package (142). The electronics package (142) generates a control signal in response to the signal received from the sensor (140) that is received by an actuator (176). The actuator (176) adjusts the position of the control valve (126) to regulate the flow rate of the lift fluid (102) therethrough in response to the control signal, thereby optimizing the flow rate of the formation fluids (104).

  • Patent number: 6286598
Abstract: A well completion system and associated methods of completing wells provides enhanced convenience in well completions involving well treatment operations. In a described embodiment, a single trip perforating and fracturing/gravel packing method permits a well completion assembly including a well screen and a perforating gun to be installed in a well, the well to be perforated and treated, and the perforating gun to be retrieved from the well in a single trip. Retrieval of the perforating gun permits multiple zone completions in the well without the perforating guns remaining in the well thereafter.

  • Patent number: 6192984
Abstract: A non-flashing fluid sampler for use in obtaining a well fluid sample. The sampler comprises a body defining a first chamber, a second chamber, a third chamber and a sampling port therein. The sampling port is in communication with the first chamber and with an outside zone outside the body. The second and third chambers are initially isolated from one another by a control valve. Upon activating the control valve, fluid may flow from the second chamber to the third chamber through a flow restriction. An extendable floating piston is disposed between the first and second chambers, and the floating piston defines a variable volume therein. An initial amount of well fluid flows into the variable volume, thus trapping dirty fluid, and subsequently, a well fluid sample is flowed into the first chamber. An isolation valve is provided for allowing hydrostatic pressure into the sampler after the fluid sample has been taken.
