  • Patent number: 4908763
Abstract: A method of processing spectral data for the earth's surface is provided which effectively identifies areas having a high probability of containing hydrocarbons. The method involves processing of intensity values for various wavebands of radiation reflected from areas of the earth's surface which correspond to image elements called pixels. The intensity values are employed in conjunction with predetermined hydrocarbon productivity data (i.e. drilled productive, dry holes) to derive discriminant probability functions whose values for various pixels are indicative of the presence of hydrocarbons in those pixels.

  • Patent number: 4868500
Abstract: A method is provided of determining saturation values corresponding to particular locations in a sample of a porous media, whereby such saturation values can be used in conjunction with corresponding capillary pressures to derive a capillary pressure curve. The method of the invention involves the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging to obtain NMR intensity values corresponding to the locations of interest. Intensity is related to saturation by an appropriate function which is employed to determine the saturation values from the intensity values.

  • Patent number: 4845134
Abstract: A gelable composition is provided which can be injected into a well prior to steam treatment of the well. The composition comprises water, a water-dispersible polymer, a water-dispersible first crosslinker and a water-dispersible second crosslinker, wherein the first and second crosslinkers have differing temperature responsive crosslinking characteristics over the temperature range of about 70.degree. F. to about 400.degree. F. so as to enable crosslinking of the polymer and gelation of the composition over substantially the entire temperature range. Injection of the composition into a "cold" well followed by steam treatment of the well causes the polymer to undergo a two stage crosslinking reaction which produces a particularly effective and stable gel in diverting steam from "thief zones" in the formation surrounding the well.

  • Patent number: 4834874
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided wherein liquid is removed from a liquid-solids mixture by employing both filtration and low pressures to achieve vaporization of liquid. The mixture is introduced to a vessel in which the mixture is filtered so that a substantial portion of the liquid is withdrawn from the vessel. The vessel is then depressurized to an extent necessary to vaporize a substantial portion of the remaining liquid. Such vapor is withdrawn from the vessel. • Patent number: 4767467
Abstract: An apparatus and method for generating thermoelectric power utilizes a hollow shell member having a cavity defined therein and a cartridge member disposed within the cavity, wherein the cartridge member has a combustion chamber defined therein. The cartridge member is mounted such that a space exists between the interior surface of the shell member and the exterior surface of the cartridge member. Thermoelectric elements are mounted to the exterior surface of the shell member such that no air spaces exist therebetween. A mixture of a combustible fuel and air is introduced into the chamber, the air/fuel ratio being less than the stoichiometric ratio for methane. Heat generated within the combustion chamber upon combustion of the fuel is transferred via the shell member to the thermoelectric elements which generate electrical energy in response thereto.

  • Patent number: 4678911
Abstract: A method of collecting and processing spectral data obtained from the earth's surface is employed to identify areas where hydrocarbon seepage to the surface is occurring. Intensity or brightness is detected from bands 4 and 5 of light reflected from a plurality of pixels, each pixel being a small subsection of a large sectional area of the earth's terrain. Band 4 and band 5 intensity values are accordingly obtained for each pixel. An alteration index, or H(x), value is then calculated for each pixel whereinH(x)=K[F.sub.4 (x)-F.sub.5 (x)],where K is a constant, x is a variable representing intensity, and F.sub.4 (x) and F.sub.5 (x) are functions of intensity for each respective band. Pixels can be selected for potential drilling if they have corresponding H values above a predetermined H value.
