    Abstract: A portion of the oil-in-water emulsion used as a lubricant/coolant in the shaping of metal articles such as containers is subjected to a reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration process to concentrate the oil portion and separate a water permeate. The oil concentrate is reincorporated in the remaining portion of the coolant and the permeate is used as rinse water to remove oil residues retained on the article from the metal shaping operation. The coolant is then reconstituted with the oil residue rinsed from the article.

    Abstract: In the manufacture of fiber-reinforced cellulose casing wherein a paper tube is passed downwardly over a mandrel, impregnated with viscose and subjected to the action of a coagulating liquid to regenerate cellulose, a gas stream is flowed upwardly within the tube as the tube is passed over the mandrel, the gas stream pressure being sufficient to maintain the cylindrical dimensions of the tube but insufficient to cause a measurable change in the dimensions of the tube walls whereby contact of the internal surface of the impregnated tube with the mandrel is reduced or substantially eliminated.

    Abstract: An improved child resistant end closure wherein the pull tab for an easy opening end is mounted within a panel bead; the tab being fastened by the rivet to a tear-out portion of the end panel. The bead is reduced in depth at the intersection with the hinge line and formed to permit the bead to fold in such manner as to resist sudden flip-out of the tear-out portion which in the previous designs has caused splashing out of the contents in the container.

In making a regenerated cellulose casing an oxazoline wax is incorporated into viscose in a proportion from about 1 - 20% by weight of the cellulose content in the viscose, the oxazoline impregnated viscose extruded into a tubular casing, coagulated, and the cellulose regenerated. The casing has excellent handle, flexibility, and peelability from sausages processed therein.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic container having multilayered sidewalls is compression molded from a multilayer billet having a first and a second thermoplastic layer, the layers being so adapted that when the thermoplastic material of the layers is heated to the heat softened state and a compressive force is imposed thereon, the layers are extruded at differential flow rates into a molding cavity whereby the fastest moving layer forms the flange and exterior surface portions of the container and the slower of the layers forms the interior surface of the multilayer container.A multilayer container, having improved gas barrier properties, which can be sealed by double seaming to metal end closures without fracture, is obtained when the faster moving of the billet layers is comprised of a relatively flexible thermoplastic resin material and the slower moving of the layers is formed from a thermoplastic resin having incorporated therein materials which improve the gas barrier properties of the resin.

    Abstract: Apparatus for forming an end finish on a hollow article having a plastically deformable tubular end portion terminating in an open end of the article. A mold surface surrounds the end portion in juxtaposition with its outer surface, and an expandable tubular membrane is received within the end portion in juxtaposition with the inner surface thereof. The interior of the membrane is sealed from the ambient, elongation of the membrane is restricted, and expansion of the membrane is limited to a lateral zone thereof coextensive with the end portion. The outer surface of the end portion is conformed to the mold surface by subjecting the interior of the membrane to a fluid under pressure to expand the membrane laterally in engagement with the inner surface of the end portion.
