  • Patent number: 4220912
Abstract: An apparatus for testing the current path integrity and operation of a wiring harness and associated components for a vehicle speed control. The testing instrument is powered from the vehicle power supply and utilizes LEDs to provide a visual indication as to the proper and/or improper operation of the tested circuit. Each LED is connected in series with a current limiting resistor and one or more of the LEDs are connected in series with a blocking diode to protect the LEDs from reverse polarity voltages. Diodes are also connected in parallel with one or more of the LEDs, their series resistors and the blocking diode to limit the forward bias voltages which can develop across the LEDs.

  • Patent number: 4175725
Abstract: A composite mold construction for casting on the connector straps, posts, and terminals for lead acid electrical storage batteries according to the techniques of U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,718,174 and 3,802,488 wherein the mold cavity areas are alternately heated by direct flame on one face and then chilled by a coolant on their opposite face to freeze metal in the cavities without freezing molten metal flowing in adjacent flow channels. A plurality of mold cavity partition inserts are arranged to be interchangeable in the main mold assembly to enable a single mold assembly to be utilized for several arrangements of battery cells, strappings, and terminals. Thermal distortion of the mating parts is minimized to maintain the cavities free of leaks by interfitting under cuts and pinned or otherwise keyed couplings between the relatively thin inserts and the more massive primary portions of the mold assembly.

  • Patent number: 4172795
Abstract: A vertically disposed centrifugal pressure filter for suspensions has a closed casing containing a sectional hollow rotary shaft, the long section of which is equipped with filter disks within the casing. A relatively short shaft section has a plug-in connection with the lower end of the long shaft section and has bearing in an outside bearing casing detachably connected to the filter casing. Dynamic sealing means is provided between the short shaft section and the bearing casing, so that when the bearing casing and short shaft section are disconnected from the filter casing and long shaft section, the seal for the short shaft section is not disturbed. The filtrate passes through the shaft sections and to the outside through the bearing casing.

  • Patent number: 4163216
Abstract: A system for automatically providing real-time weather and other pertinent information about an airport to an aircraft. The system can operate continuously or the pilot can utilize his radio telephone equipment to activate the information transmitter. Instantaneous weather information such as temperature, wind speed and direction and barometric pressure are supplied to a microcomputer which determines the real-time values as an average over a predetermined time period. The microcomputer then responds to the activating signal from the aircraft or operates continuously to selectively address the stored messages corresponding to the real-time information for transmission to the aircraft.

  • Patent number: 4156162
Abstract: A system for controlling the speed-torque characteristic of a direct current motor which advantageously can be utilized to drive a surface wind machine for winding web material under controlled tension. The system generates a desired speed signal which is compared with a signal representing the actual motor speed to control a gating circuit and rectifier bridge for applying a selectively variable magnitude direct current voltage to the motor armature to cause the motor to run at the desired point on the speed-torque characteristic curve. The system generates a maximum no load speed adjustment signal which is compared with a speed adjustment signal to generate the desired speed signal. The motor armature current is sensed to generate a scaled armature current signal representing a decrease in the no load speed due to the load imposed on the motor. The system also generates a tension adjustment signal which defines a rate of decrease from the no load speed value to establish the speed-torque characteristic.

  • Patent number: 4154685
Abstract: The invention provides a septic tank system of greatly improved effectiveness in maintaining optimum bacterial action for a maximum length of time by utilizing a plurality of series connected tanks with the water level in each successive tank being lower than that in the first tank so that gravity flow is established between the successive tanks. A unique transfer means is provided between each of the successive tanks comprising one or more horizontal pipes having their inlet ends closed, and each horizontal pipe having one or more horizontal slots formed in the wall thereof at a level above the bottom of the pipe bore to permit the removal of scum through said slots by entrainment and/or suction action of the fluid flowing through the transfer pipe, thereby permitting gases to freely escape through the scum from the effluent surface of each tank and preventing the deleterious effects of trapped gases upon the biodegradation action normally produced in each successive septic tank.

  • Patent number: 4149529
Abstract: A portable apparatus for controllably cooling and variably, intermittently applying pressure to a portion of a body part of a mammalian organism comprising a liquid supply and control unit having means to store, circulate, cool, agitate, and pressurize a fluid and means to communicate via fluid communication means to a hydraulic appliance having a unitary body, with an unrestricted inlet port to receive the fluid, and an outlet port in association with a fluid flow retardation means secured to the interior surface of the outlet port. The reservoir in the supply unit is arranged with a heat exchanger immersed in the liquid and agitating means to avoid thermal stratification of the liquid. The reservoir is mounted in the supply unit with sufficient support to sustain the weight of a human and has an open top of sufficient dimensions to receive a human limb whereby the reservoir can be employed as a whirlpool bath. A cover is provided for the open top when the reservoir is not used as a whirlpool bath.

  • Patent number: 4150328
Abstract: In a control apparatus for a machine tool, an interpolator circuit for determining whether or not one of the axis motors should be inhibited on the next step to maintain the tool closer to the desired circular path. The interpolator utilizes information as to the distance from the initial position of the tool to the center of the arc defining the path of travel and which axis is to be inhibited initially to determine when to inhibit. The main logic circuit in the control apparatus begins a move of the number of steps equal to the distance to be moved along the axis which represents the shorter distance between the initial point and the center of the arc. The interpolator presets a counter with that number of steps subtracted from the number of steps equal to the distance to be moved along the other axis and increments that counter by one each time the selected motor is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 4147373
Abstract: A vehicle tow trailer particularly useful for farm vehicles such as tractors or combines having an underslung frame with cradles for receiving the front wheels of the vehicle. The trailer is arranged with steerable wheels which track the angular relationship of a tow bar. Light weight towing vehicles can tow heavy equipment by arranging the cradles to position the axes of rotation of the trailer supported wheels of the towed vehicle ahead of the axis of rotation of the trailer wheels thereby loading the towing vehicle through the tow bar to give it better traction. The towed vehicle is afforded an abutment bar near the center of the cradle supported wheels to prevent the overrun of the towed vehicle on the towing vehicle and to provide a means for securing the towed vehicle to the trailer as by a chain. The underslung trailer body has skids on its underbody to facilitate traversing rough terrain as where a trailer wheel falls into a hole.

  • Patent number: 4145509
Abstract: An improved gasket is disclosed having a novel sealant comprising the reaction product of a monoacrylated, terminated, active hydrogen-containing hydrocarboxy reactant an aromatic diisocyanate, and a polyacrylated terminated hydrocarboxy reactant. The active hydrogen of the monoacrylated reactant reacts with at least one isocyanate radical of the aromatic diisocyanate to form an isocyanate linkage, and the reaction product of the monoacrylated and diisocyanate reactant is further reacted with the polyacrylated terminated reactant in widely varying mole ratios. The resulting gaskets have improved temperature resistance, compressibility, film hardness, elongation, flexibility, and organic solvent resistance.
